In 2018 Saiki underwent vocal cord polyps surgery, after she struggled with her throat for two years. After she suddenly lost her voice, she decided to go ahead with the surgery and although Saiki was initially terrified the procedure went well, and her voice and throat are today better than ever.

@@ericifune5543 yes totally agree, the band really take care of Saiki's voice during concerts not just with the instrumentals but with Mikus sole songs and the MC parts that Miku does, i mean if she didn't do magic spell time i think we would riot LOL, the fewer of these voice breaks the better saiki's voice is on the night yes she does take pee breaks but its because she drinks far more water than anyone else on stage during the 2 hour concert due to her throat needing to be cooled down

That one scene encapsulates many of the personalities of Band-Maid. Misa is drinking which she enjoys, Akane is eating voraciously which she enjoys, Saiki is sitting there alone, Kanami comes up to give Saiki a hug since she is in love with her, and Miku is standing in the back observing the chaos. The final scene with Saiki placing her foot on the man's back demonstrates her propensity for being a dominatrix, and her love of controlling the crowd in live performances.

For your information this song is available live at Zepp Tokyo and is stellar with a duel between Misa and Kanami so deep and intense that few people put atention on Akane and she is, in my opinion, the key factor adding tension and mistery dropping 'like some sounding fog' in the atmosphere... @@JulesTheHuman Saiki hired a vocal coach to teach her techniques to protect her voice because she was scared to have surgery, but the coach warned her that at some point she'd have no choice. She could still hit all the notes then but it put a lot of strain on her voice & she admitted she could only sing with 65% power. I thought i'd tell you that Jules even tho i'm still seeing a distinct lack of Maid bow nail polish.😏

This video is a great play on their "characters" from when they started. Akane is the glutton, Misa is the drunk, Kanami is in love with Saiki who is very cold towards her and Kobato pretends to be a cute maid when she's really an agent of chaos. 😂 They evolved out of those roles with time and became publicly more like their actual selves now that they don't have to adhere to the old "idol" ways. 👍 And the capitalisation is part of Kobato's way of composing her poetry, making it visual as well as lyrical. Written Japanese has several ways of conveying meaning so she uses that a lot in her lyrics, it is quite brilliant what she does with it.

The "Exaggerated" personalities in this MV are Akane-. the big eater (She is.) MISA - the boozer (She is..... it relaxes her on stage) Miku - the Hostess (She is... Magic spell time in EVERY Band-Maid performance) Saiki - The cold Ice Queen (She is....rather shy for a front woman.) Kanami - the "fan girl" of the cold Ice Queen. (She may be a great songwriter, but She Is The Biggest Saiki Fan.....without it going "Rainbow".)

Your last point with Kanami, is exactly on point. Too many people don't realize it was an over the top exaggeration. Of a joke or a prank that got out of hand, overblown and misunderstood. But utilized by the ladies some what to their benefit.

Yes this is Saiki's old voice, before she had an operation for polyps. My favourite parts of this video is Miku's excited little jump before they trash the room, but best is MISA getting carried away and throwing the mic stand!

They had an interview with Gold Rush where they told a bit of their personality that was later on shown in this music video. Also, Kanami hurt her knee when she "accidently" fell on the ground to "accidently" hug Saiki. Afterwards she said she did not regret it 😏

Saiki demands 土下座! As others have said here in the comments, Saiki had surgery for vocal polyps, and has since recovered and learned how to protect her voice. If you do happen watch any of their interviews from before the surgery, you'll hear just how rough her voice was and how she avoided all unnecessary speaking. It might be part of her reputation as "ice queen" (although some of that is just her personality). She was a dancer and proud of her legs, too. The other band members have talked about how she wore shorts or miniskirts all the time when she first joined the band.

The LIVE version is even better! It has a Call & Response "Battle" between Kanami and MISA. If you're not adverse to visiting Chinese websites, go to Bilibili and look for the Zepp Tokyo LIVE concert. 'Don't You Tell Me is the 9the song. The entire concert is 26 songs! I believe that this song is before, or soon after Saiki's throat surgery. She was initially hesitant to have it done, but once she got it she wondered why she waited so long. So if her voice wasn't 100% they probably had to turn her up to hear her better. This does show their personalities. Akane's eating, MISA's drinking, Miku is doing her Maid Magic, Saiki is just being cool and Kanami is fawning over her and being just a little bit klutzy. Saiki's vocals are very percussive in this song, she does this style of delivery on several of their songs that I've heard. Just another reason why I love her as a vocalist, she can change the feel of a song by changing her vocal style and she does everything brilliantly.

Jules I recommend a two in one. FIRST watch Band-Maid 'Secret My Lips' and SECOND watch Band-Maiko 'Secret Maiko Lips'. Watch in that order for full effect. You will see another side the the ladies!

G'day Jules - yes this video definitely meant to introduce a little of their personality - or at least the parts that they were comfortable to publicly portray. Early on Miku definitely had a plan for the Band's image, and, to use a Japanese term, each of their 'charm' points. For me this first accentuated Akan'e appetite, which gets referenced rather a lot in other interactions, including the Band Maiko MV. Still a great song, and I agree about Saiki's vocals being a little more forward.

This one will always be in my top 10 by BM. I will even sometimes put it and Puzzle on repeat and just let them play. And yes there is a measurable difference between pre and post surgery. Saiki of course went through therapy after surgery and she started using a voice coach to help her recover. Saiki now has much more control as she sings and uses her range more effectively. Just listen to the live MV Wonderland and you can see the difference.

I think two videos you should watch next are Endless Story, a mid tempo song where some more of their personality shows through their playing. Then to stick with the theme of early BM, Real Existence (live). But some of their best songs do not have videos. There are so many to name, but you need to listen to Awkward, hide-and-seek, Turn Me On, Sayonakidori, and Corallium. Then give Miku some love by checking out here solo project Cluppo. The entire 6-song mini album is great. Much different than BM, but great.

I think the only other time i have seen the band do more of a story line type video is Band Maiko Aprils Fools secret MAIKO lips kzbin.info/www/bejne/hH-reHR4rNKYa5I and possibly "Don't let me down" kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoqqqIienJeLhM0 although that's just Miku running her ass off in Tokyo in heels (full English song but the lyrics are risky as hell)

Japanese bands in general seem to play around with capitalization a lot when they have English song and album titles (and band names and stage names, for example, singer AiNA THE END of the alt-idol group BiSH), maybe because while Japanese writing has no direct equivalent, it does mix hiragana, katakana, and kanji; so, different written forms of the same word or sound don't seem weird. Miku (like other writers) regularly uses this to shade lyric meanings, for example using katakana instead of the more precise kanji to make a word's meaning ambiguous.
