@baritonebynight3 жыл бұрын
He couldn't upstage her.....she's Julia Child for God's sake! She made an off the record comment once "Serious cooks don't like him (Emeril)....he's more for people like my garage attendant." Emeril live wasn't a teaching show. It was the beginning of Food Network's shift from education to entertainment. He had his catch phrases and his live band.... but never gave proportions or explained the technique while the studio audience went wild and clapped like trained seals. Julia Child's shows demonstrate how to cook and she didn't need a band. Nearly twenty years after her passing, she is still as relevant as ever. She has been portrayed by Dan Aykroyd, Jean Stapleton, and Meryl Streep. Her Cambridge kitchen is one of the most popular exhibits in the Smithsonian. Her books are still the gold standards on learning how to cook. Emeril? He had a following in the mid to late 1990s...but in the end was unremarkable. Now he sells air fryers.

I grew up in a single mom household without cable. PBS taught me how to cook. When my mother passes and I think about my favorite time with her, it would be us two on the sofa watching Julia Child while smelling beef stew in cast aluminum in the oven. I adore that Julia does not hold back in this, even in her nineties - teaching a chef the proper ways, standing up for herself, forever an amazing woman. Julia and Mom taught me how to cook, not out of a cookbook, but why we use certain tools, how we cut things, how things are treated. Julia and the collar....My heart.
