This interview was in late April 2003. Tesla was incorporated less than three months later, in July of 2003, in order to develop the Roadster. Conan may well have planted the seed idea for Tesla.

GM had the EV1 in the late 90s but only about 1000 were built. GM ended the program in 2001, so her electric car must jibe been something else.

Louis-Dreyfus and her husband Brad Hall would've just had to have purchased it some time earlier. However, as it happens, the car they owned was a Honda EV Plus, which according one interview with Hall and Louis-Dreyfus, they purchased in 1998 (but still owned in 2003...see how that works? ;) ). You can read more about the car on Wikipedia, and there is some interesting discussion in that same interview (on the web site Grist) that describes their early adoption of an environmentally aware lifestyle. But the short version is that Louis-Dreyfus and especially her husband have a long history of making an effort to be eco-friendly. The car itself wasn't ever mass marketed, but rather was largely an experimental platform that helped Honda develop the hybrid Insight which came out in 1999.
