My dad explained everything straight out, so I never worried about stuff. My mum, however, wouldn't do it. I found her tampons and she would NEVER just tell me what they were, which was ridiculous, so I developed a theory that my mum was smoking some secret drugs, cos they look like doobies.

Bertand Russell suggested having "the talk" with kids before they become obsessed. Present the information clearly before adolescent guesswork has a chance to cloud the issue. My kids knew around six what the process is - as they grow we can discuss the emotional and social complications that accompany such endeavors!

You Guys Know What I Really Love About TED? Their Commercials are at the End! That gives me the easy, viable option to decide whether to watch it or not. In the end I usually end up watching it beacause Ted usually allows only "good material" (Caps are misused to emphasize)

@MobiusCoin - well your KZbin name sounds rounded! When I decided to take B. Russell's advice, I had some trepidation, but they were curious in a "matter of fact" way. It was downright clinical and unburdened. I'm really glad we had "the talk" early because now they know and they have no illusions about the process. I think what's really crippling are the social elements! Birds & bees are simple!

@yitih "Julia Sweeney has 'The Talk'" is the title and at the end it says sponsored by Liberty Mutual. Half of the video had nothing to do with the title, I don't care that there is a commercial, but I also do not want something titled one thing and have another.

Why would you want to be dishonest to your child if it's not absolutely necessary? There's nothing wrong with sex or reproduction and if you lie to your child or are evasive, they're going to know it and draw the wrong conclusions or be more curious than they otherwise might be. It seems perfectly reasonable to me that one ought be as open and frank as possible. If it drifts into a territory you feel they cannot yet handle then tell them so and that you can discuss it more in a few years.
@molewizard14 жыл бұрын
Ugh, read the comment below. Just because it's entertaining, does not mean it belongs in a TED talk. TED wouldn't exhibit, say, a live performance of 'It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia,' would they? They wouldn't host a Miley Cyrus performance, would they? But, by your logic, since those are 'entertainment,' they fit! No.

It's totally okay to explain intellectually to a very young child any number of things, my dad explained this to me just as you would a teenager. If you have a kid, just tell them straight out, from photosynthesis to reproduction to the universe expanding to all number of things. What is confusing to kids is not reality, it's the lame way people try to explain. They are basically aliens trying to figure out the world. Just tell them. I like this story tho.
