"I don't know what I don't know." I think a teacher/tutor would be great in that instance as a supplement to self-learning.

Absolutely! If you can find a teacher willing to work with you on an as needed basis, that would be a great compromise. I definitely think working weekly with a teacher is best, but this is for those who si.ply don't have access or can't afford/justify weekly lessons.

I've noticed that a difficult thing a self-taught musician to learn is form. I grew up with the same piano teacher for a very long time, and physicality is something that's stuck with me.

Unfortunately, yes. I think even if someone decides to go down the route of "self taught", I'd still recommend taking a lesson or two as often as they're able. The next best thing is community to offer feedback, but that can also be overwhelming if you're a beginner and getting too much advice.

Can you teach yourself the violin? Yes. Just be ready for years of sweat, tears, and carpal tunnel syndrome if you dont do it right. All jokes aside, you hit every single point, the hardest thing for me,(had a teacher,) was bad habits, especially posture.

Lol!!! Well, sweat, tears, and carpal tunnel syndrome may happen even WITH a teacher. I've met quite a few people that are worried they won't ever be able to learn without a teacher, and I wanted to give resources to help those who want to go that route. It wasn't meant to be discouraging at all 🤣 But I agree with you, bad habits are incredibly difficult to fix and they happen even with teachers. As a teacher, I realize that sometimes I don't notice a student's bad habits until it's become a problem... it requires a lot of diligence and attention to avoid from any aspect.

@@JuliaDinaViolin I support you 100%. Classical instruments, especially strings, are getting fewer people each year, even though plenty of people I've talked to are interested. It's an undertaking, but if people ask, provide. You may inspire somebody far better than you, you never know.

As someone who attempted it, go for a teacher route. Skipping a pizza in favor of a tutor is totally worth it, as any music you will make gives you back, while a pizza will only leave you longing.

Thank you for the advice in this video. im a as fresh as i can be in the violin i saw rob play the violin beautifully and got a violin that my friend had for years but didn't learn to use it. i think now i have a good idea of how i would start at least. i have a question : i don't want to learn how to read sheet music right now i feel it's overwhelming so im actually watching violin tab music on youtube and try to play along to learn how to produce sound and use all my 4 fingers to play. then i would start to learn reading the sheets. is it good orr... am i doing a big No No

Hey thanks! I'd say still to try to learn to read sheet music.. maybe you can get sheet music for the tabs you're learning and eventually switch over to sheet music so you start to get used to it. I love the book "I can read music vol. 1" - if you do that along WITH tabs, that may help. Good luck!
