I can say that I only noticed a greater progress many years after I started playing. My learning process was markedly by steps. @xaladrez78113 жыл бұрын
It is possible to do Vibrato in such a short period. It depends on the person's skill level and other stuff. I learned vibrato within one month of learning the violin (without skipping any day) and i was desperate to learn vibrato cuz it makes my out of tune stuff sound better when playing infrot of ppl. The way i learnt it in such a short period is by analysing the movement and technical side of it. From the tip of the finger upto the the shoulder to make sure i'm doing the right thing. First few days i almost gave up cuz my finger wouldn't listen to me but suddenly one day i tried it and it worked like a miracle. Well it's not actually a miracle cuz what happened was my body learnt it and built the neccessary things for me to do it and i did it. It's specially very easy for Adult beginner's cuz we understand things better than a little kid.
@annaf28283 жыл бұрын
@@xaladrez7811 it’s still better to be able to play correctly in tune before you add on vibrato, idk if you have a lessons teacher, but in my lessons I always had to practice vibrato with a tuner and metronome so I only waved my intonation a certain amount and at certain intervals. It takes incredible precision to be able to do the correct amount of vibrato.
@andyhurrell Жыл бұрын
I began playing the violin two months after my 62nd birthday. I am now 67. I played brass instruments from the age of 8 and studied music at degree level, so although I was a violin 'beginner' I had a big headstart over an absolute beginner - being able to read music notation and knowing how key signatures and scales work removed many complications from the typical beginner's equation. Also, by the time I got to 62 I'd heard quite a lot of music, so I had a clear idea of what I was trying to achieve; it's pointless studying the details before you have grasped the overall concept. I was not surprised to discover that playing a violin with good intonation is really difficult - and I mean really difficult - at least, it is for me. Firstly, although I consider myself musically sensitive, I am often a bit slow to determine whether a pitch is slightly sharp or slightly flat. This is a major handicap for a violinist, but wouldn't necessarily be an impediment to an accordionist, percussionist, or a guitarist etc. I use an electronic tuner to check my intonation. One sometimes hear people arguing that using a tuner stops you from relying on your ear - but I would argue that using a tuner helps one to train one's ear so that your ear becomes moe reliable. I also use a metronome; the same logic applies. I wasted many hundreds of hours in the early stages of my violin project by pressing too hard onto the fingerboard. (I even managed to give myself tendonitis in my left-hand first finger.) I got duff advice about 'pressing firmly' from a KZbin lesson, and only began to correct this mistake after watching a clip of Yehudi Menuhin teaching at his school in Surrey. "Don't press harder than necessary with your left hand fingers," is one piece of advice that I wish I'd had from the outset. Of course, with all instrumental playing, unnecessary tension is to be avoided. BTW I don't have a teacher, other than myself, of course. I can't afford a teacher I would actually trust. The majority of instrumental teachers are a bit useless IMHO. I was one myself (in four countries) so I consider myself qualified to be scathing. I practise every day, usually twice - morning and evening. Most people, of whatever age, who take instrumental lessons 'give up' at some point. It takes either monumental amounts of perseverance and patience, or an extraordinary amount of natural flair, to learn to play any instrument well. One needs to have confidence in the learning process, one needs patience with oneself - and one needs self-discipline and dogged determination when the more lofty motivation and self-actualisation flags. I sometimes find it hard to get started on my daily practise sessions, but once I get going it always proves to be worthwhile. Above all, one must think positively. Negative thinking is the killer. Every time I pick up my violin I try to play better than I've ever played before. Of course, progress is not made in straight lines, but if we practise intelligently and think positively the general trend will be upwards.
@melizmatea8 ай бұрын
Thank you for that! I am 61 and just started, so that was very helpful to me!
@andyhurrell8 ай бұрын
@@melizmatea I am still working on the fundamentals, even after six years! My fourth finger needs remedial work, because when I started I found it impossible to play anywhere near in tune with the fourth finger, so I took the soft-option of playing on the open string. This, I now think, was a short-sighted, short-termist strategy - a mistake, which, quite possibly, a half-decent teacher would have not allowed me to adopt. I still play only in first position. I focus on playing in-time, in-tune, keeping the bow on the sweet spot, keeping the bow at right angles to the strings, making smooth/artistic bow changes and using both ends of the bow. I am trying to speed up my vibrato (which is still rather pedestrian and wobbly) and play beautifully-shaped, singing phrases. I play only in keys up to three sharps and two flats. I find chromatic passages nigh-on impossible. I could possibly get-by playing with local amateurs at the back of the seconds in the easiest of orchestral repertoire, but I suspect it would lead me into bad habits, so I've never attempted it. I would rather be able to move listeners than impress them, so, on the principal that it's relatively easy to scrape out a cheerful, foot-tappy, up-tempo tune I have set myself the task of becoming good enough to bring a tear-to-the-eye as I play a slow, expressive melody at my own funeral.

This is great advice for ANY instrument! To add to the comment: I've been playing guitar for quite a while and I started playing the piano. Higher quality output happens when you really slow down and do it as perfect as possible as slow as 45 BPM. It is far easier to fix learned mistakes this way. If you go too fast, you learn mistakes and bad habits along the way. THAT is hard to fix down the road. Remember, going slow allows you to build a solid foundation for your house. Otherwise, you are building a house of cards that will collapse at the slightest bump.

Hi there! Just saw your playing you’ve made amazing progress! I’m a professional violist but I teach violin since no one plays viola haha! If I could offer one bit of advice, I noticed that your left hand moves a lot when you are playing. I always try to explain that it’s important to make your fingers do the work! By constantly accommodating your fingers with your hand, you’re creating 2 motions (moving hand and placing finger) instead of 1 motion (placing finger). It’s important to find a hand position that can accommodate the placement of your first finger and pinky to really optimize the efficiency of your playing and it will feel a lot “easier” in the hand because it won’t be under so much stress! It’s also how people play super fast! If you look closely at super talented violinists playing really difficult pieces like Sibelius violin concerto, their hand really only moves to shift! Hope this helps! Keep up the great work :))

Thanks for sharing! I love it when adults share their progress, because I think it really encourages us to give it a go. A lot of people really worry about starting as an adult because it feels like we'll never get anywhere. At least, thats how i felt. And now I've been playing for 2 years, I'd never be without it. Keep it up, and definitely keep sharing! It helps more than you know.

You're an inspiration for me Cassie Casper, I'm an African, from Eastern Nigeria precisely. I've always wanted to play a violin 🎻 but circumstances hindered me. But since the middle of this year and especially this month, my violin dreams came back. I'm starting to get enough fund for purchasing my violin 🎻 and paying for a teacher. It isn't going to be easy for me Cassie but I think my life needs it. I'm ready now. God bless you for this encouraging and glorious video. ❤️

I am really impressed. The fact that you are able to read your own reactions and feelings is awesome. You get stuck and you press on, you get frustrated and you press on, you fail and you press on. You have my respect for not giving in to the negative feelings. I think if you keep on you will be an awesome violinist some day. Thanks for sharing your journey.

I recently rekindled my love for the violin. Played from 5th grade all the way through my senior year in high school put myself through private lessons and everything. Would casually play for fun after I graduated but never really practiced after that. 7 years went by without ever practicing and one day I decided I did not want to lose that talent. It's been about 5 months since I started again and I've progressed so fast as an adult learner. I wish I was this good when I was in high school I would of pursued it in college.

Congratulations on the progress you've made so far - inspirational! I started to play just over a year ago (Jan 2020) and I totally feel your frustration. I am 63 years old and retired. I started violin 3-1/2 weeks ago. Before this time, I never even picked up a violin, never mind tried to play one. In the course I am following ('The Online Piano and Violin Teacher', aka Alison Sparrow), I am now learning how to use the first finger of my left hand. I had my first lesson from an in-person teacher last week, and they told me that I am making good progress. Your video inspires me to not give up. Thank you for having the courage to post it; I am not sure how good a judge I can be, but I believe you have made really good progress. Good luck on your continuing journey.

Im 32 and i wanted to pick up my violin again. I played when i was in middle school for two years, but was an awful student (never practiced, and hated going to lessons)... i could kick myself for not sticking to it. I used to be so musical, but i can't even read music anymore. I just restrung my violin and went looking for beginner violin videos and came across yours. You're an inspiration. Im so impressed how far you came in just a year! that's awesome! Thanks for being vulnerable and sharing your journey.

I know I won't be great by then, but it'll motivate me to at least do my best and see how far I can get in such a short amount of time!! Your progress is great! Inspires me even more🥰

I am so inspired by you. I just recently got back to taking piano lessons after 20 years of absence. I waited 30 years to finally get my own piano. It's hard to get back to the same level as 20 years ago. I am frustrated that my fingers don't move like they used to, and the Bach pieces are not a walk in the park like they used to be. But man, am I glad that I play. You taught me one thing... it's never too late to learn a musical instrument. I can see the determination in you. Keep up the good work; you will be amazing one day.

I've started really learning four years ago. I noticed you text you were getting frustrated around the 12th month. That means you are actually learning and developing your skillsets. You are on your way! I got so fustrated with myself, I told my instructor, I'm going to take my time with harder techniques so my intonation and tonation become more on point. Everyone has their "perks and querks" when it comes to learning how to play the violin or any instument. I'm looking for a beginners community group who play strings. I truly need to branch out. Thanks for sharing...EXCELLENT JOB!!!

37 yrs old and enjoyed watching the progress. I played a little bit in elementary school, but hated the practicing. Since my mom passed away in March, she had 2 violins. I took one and my sister took the other one. She plays more advanced than me, but I get my mom's violin out of the shop next week and start lessons in August! Hopefully, i can play just as good as mom did. We'll see. lol.

I started 2 months ago and I also have no background in music and I am 34 tall guy. But I feel that determination and motivation may be the way to do it, after all we don't have to do it we just want it :) If you have some tips for how to extend the flexibility in fingers I'll be glad. I'm having issues esp. with my thumb - always trying to slip under and first finger - I sometimes feel I can't retract it back enough. Good luck with your progress!

Wonderful to watch! I'm 28, and started learning at the beggining of the pandemic - i literally had ONE class before quarantine started. I tried to stuck with it, had some online classes and kept learning on my own, finding resources on the internet. I abandoned it for months at a time, but have always come back. Now I feel like I'm truly in love with the process! Maybe one day I'll make a progress video of my own, that should be fun. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for posting this. Don't measure yourself to professional standards, these type of videos are not for people who want to actually listen to music but for others interested or learning. I basically did about 3 months (with a summer break) and took 7 lessons so far so it's interesting to see what to expect. Sure sure everyone is different but I kind of play like you did around that time, probably with same mistakes. I am not sure how you managed to practice every day, people sometimes need to travel or get sick so perhaps absolute 100% is not a realistic goal to keep but still interesting (I did have a running streak at some point past 2 years but I see it being a bit easier, unless 'violin streak association' also has a really low standard that one can fulfill while sick or on the road ;) ). Btw what app did you use to count the streak? Far from being a professional so just friendly advice but seeing you play I think you would still benefit a great deal from a teacher. I don't know how many years we 'need' teacher but probably several, if not forever. If money is an issue maybe try some online lessons which will be a lot lower quality with the teacher not present, and who knows with what experience, but could be a lot cheaper as well. I really don't know if it's actually useful (could be hit and miss) but was contemplating using 'fiverr' if I ever need to, you could check it out. The special violin question seemed tough with different environments hence different sound each time, so didn't really pay attention to it after a while, but that 7th month video kind of still stood out. Kind of like your new strings day just differently. Playing with all those people sounds like fun and great experience and motivation. I wish I had people to play with but I'm in a new country and don't speak the language so I'm just lucky I found an english speaking teacher nearby... p.s. what were old, and new strings? just curious.

Thank you for watching and leaving such a thoughtful response! As far as practicing everyday goes, it doesn't necessarily have to be physically playing the violin if that's not possible, it also includes all the aspects needed for playing such as mobility and finger independence exercises, reading through sheet music and practicing the rhythms through clapping or singing the notes, studying professional recordings and mimicking posture and such. All very valid and necessary practice techniques that can be utilized when travelling. It's definitely still not necessarily a realistic goal but it was something I challenged myself to for the first year just to see if I could do it. I originally challenged myself to 10 minutes a day bare minimum but I was one of the lucky ones who just really enjoyed it so much I wound up rushing home from work so I could spend almost the entire 3 hours before bed to practice (most nights) The app I used is call Loop Habit Tracker. I do really want to find a new teacher. Everyone can benefit from a teacher, that's for sure. I hear even the pros go to lessons now and again. I was spoiled with my old teacher, we meshed really well so part of me is hesitating because I'm worried I won't find a teacher I like as much. But I'm also looking at some of the teachers on fiverr already. just need to bite the bullet and try I guess haha That's true, I hadn't thought about the acoustic quality of the rooms when I was making the video. I hope you can find people to play with soon! These days it seems to be even harder...unfortunately :( The old strings were just the super cheap stock strings that came with the instrument (it's one of those everything-included deals) but I believe the new ones are Dominant strings :) Best of luck in your learning journey as well!
