I really enjoyed this series. Particularly the empathetic way Julian felt about long lost relatives he never knew. I loved when he went into the house by the church and pictured his Great Grandmother leaving to walk to her wedding. Thank you.

I really like him he's so lovely. The funny thing us when I found out my grandad was from Prussia I said the same thing. I was so upset they were German not a word was said when I was a child. Mum use to say somewhere in Spain. I'm same age as Julian.

I agree with the dad, my maternal great-grandfather was of German origin, and even though he fought in WW1 and lost a leg, he never spoke about his German ancestry, as if he was ashamed. My grandmother would always play it down too. It wasn't until I was researching our family tree I found out his name was Wilhelm not William as we had been told.

Wilhelm and William are the same name. It's a direct translation from German to English.
@chelseagirl924

@@lightyagami3492Why are you telling me something I already know? I didnt say they weren' t the same name just that he never ever mentioned his German name or his background or anything to do with being of German descent. I've lived in other countries that have a variation of my name and I use the English pronunciation, because that's the name I was given.

The running joke in this American family was we don't care where we are from (mostly Britain circa year 1698) as long as it's not French. My paternal grandmother spoke fluent German so we knew where she was from, of course? When I started doing the genealogy, I couldn't get back to Germany. We were scratching our heads. No German in the DNA. There was a lot of French information there though. Come to find out, they were from the Alsace-Lorraine area. That is a mixture of both German and French in that area over decades. So, who knows? I don't really understand why she wouldn't talk about that considering she was here long before the wars. But, I guess it stuck.

I found this episode difficult to watch. The prejudice is shocking, considering how England has been behaving throughout history. I felt a bit of Schadenfreude when I saw mum’s face. As the old Prussians used to say “Unverhofft kommt oft”.

A general DNA test of every British person (European origin) is likely to shock the whole „yesterman‘s nation“: I bet they would find a literally awful lot of former French/German/Viking/continental Celtic blood…The British nation still seems to be obsessed with WW I and II and is therefore imprisoned in the past. Obviously many British people still cannot cope with the downfall of the (highly imperialistic) British Empire. I do like the Brits in general but no other modern European nation I know is so strangely obsessed with WW ii (even WW I!) You have to overcome that old past and join mentally the modern united European community, regardless what country. Modern Germans are mainly nice, good people.

His parents were probably born post war. Please don’t judge them harshly as growing up in those days there was still a lot of prejudice as many people lost their loved ones in the war. You just can’t judge people by todays standards if you were not affected.
