Nice shootout. Julian had quite a bit of respect for Baek, who was very strong. Julian danced around quite a bit to start. It's not something you normally see from The Hawk, who was a fast starter and usually came right at his opponent. He was stunned early but ended up scoring a great knockout. Damn that dude was a gnarly power puncher.

MrCultforever yeah but twice. Don’t forget McCallum beat him before that. McClellan was a fun guy to watch too though. A shame what happened to him. I firmly believe that what goes around comes around. In his case McClellan unfortunately was a despicable asshole outside the ring.

This was Jackson's first world title win. He had a shot against McCallum a year later. Shows how good McCallum was because Jackson became a good champion at both 154 lbs and 160

Great night for Don King fighters, but JCC and Julian Jackson made it a great night. Jackson knocking out an iron chinned In Chul Baek and Chavez standing in their with Rosario taking some massive bombs that bounced off Chavez's skull like nothing. Chavez and Jackson were in their primes here.

Yeah, it was a very good stoppage. Baek was badly hurt. He got up from that knockdown on guts alone. He was out of it. I never really liked Mills Lane as a ref because he was usually way too involved but he did his job this time.

Jackson, called the hardest puncher of all time, admitted in later years that Baek was tough as nails and was the hardest puncher he had ever faced. He began to circle aroud Baek as soon as the bell rang and continued to box, which I think says it all. Jackson says Baek hit him harder than mcclellan. William Joppy says Takehara harder than Trinidad. RJJ says Merqui Sosa harder than Tarver. Toney also says Sosa harder than Samuel Peter. Baek, Takehara and Sosa, none of whom even knocked down each of those legendary middle weights in 90's nor were they a best-known hardest puncher respectively at the time, but those legends all acknowledged they were the best. The facts speak for themselves.

Yeah, I noticed that The Hawk was really trying to box in this fight. When I saw that Baek had 36 knockouts in 41 victories, I was like "Ah, now I understand." LOL Thank you for the info. I'm guessing Jackson and his team did their homework on Baek and knew they had to be careful. I gave Baek the second round, it was pretty close.

@@ConcernedResident_GiantStack Thanks for getting back to me. I know some anecdotes about Baek. Let me tell you the one concerning this fight. He was knowned as a heavy drinker. he had a bad habit of disappearing from the gym and drinking heavily somewhere. Sometimes it happend even before the fight! This time, he had gone missing again and not coming up in the gym for more than two weeks until he finally got caught completely drunk about ten days before the fight began LOL. That, however, doesn't means he lacked self-discipline or tended to be nervous under pressure by the coming fight ; he was a talented boxer but trained hard all the time(except when disappearing for drinking), and he fought everybody. he just loved drinking. The people concerned were more disappointed than angry when they found him just before the fight with Jackson( he just said, "sorry, sorry, sir." ), but for some reason they couldn't hate him ; they all somehow found him likeable.
@ConcernedResident_GiantStack4 жыл бұрын
@@soft76cider LOL ... He got drunk and went missing before fighting Jackson? I yi yi! lol Well, fighters aren't known to be calm ppl outside the ring so I guess it makes sense, haha! Thank you for the tidbit. Due to the lockdown, I'm looking at MacCallum and Jackson fights during their Jr. Middleweight run. I wish those guys would've unified back in those days, but I get it that it was so uncommon due to the politics of the promoters. Would you say MacCallum and Jackson, during their respective WBA runs, were the top dogs in the division?
@soft76cider4 жыл бұрын
@@ConcernedResident_GiantStack Oh no, lockdown...I'm in Japan, so no lockdown(It's a good and bad thing. I hope they will decide to go ahead with lockdown as your country did right away.). I'd say MacCallum was definitely the top dog in this divison(Jr.middle) while to be honest, Jackson, just comparing to Bodysnatcher, was not so much although I loved The Hawk. I'm sorry, something came up, I'll get back to you later!

@@ConcernedResident_GiantStack Seeing Mike McCallum always reminds me of the legendary boxers of the golden era such as SRR, Ezzard Charles, archie moore, and so on. His style was very old-school. Indeed, I've heard that he often watched, especially before the fight, SRR's films and always said he wished he could fight just as SRR did. McCallum vs ToneyⅠ&Ⅱ(Ⅲ was good) were, Peronally I think, fight of the 90's. Those in the know, know it very well. The quality skill in those fights is mad. McCallum is such a monster; being the same generation as the fab four, he took on a prime James Toney in his mid thirties and still gave him the hardest time and then he was still something against prime RJJ in 1996. Toney said Mike was his most difficult opponent in his career, the best he ever faced. Moreover, RJJ and James Toney both said Mike was the most skilled they ever faced.. that means a lot. As you know, Toney was very old-school as well. He was a total monster at only 23 or 24 years old taking on the toughest challenge like McCallum. His first trainer Bill Miller told(forced) him, after the gym almost every night, to watch the films of the legends including not only those famous ones I mentioned above but also Charley Burley, Hogan "Kid" Bassey, Battling Siki. His shoulder roll came from those legends. quotation ”I watched films and was trying these moves and I’m like, `Damn, this hurts,'” Toney said. “I’d go home and punch in the mirror every day. I’d go back in the gym the next day, try the same thing again and, bam, get hit in the body.” “Bill, this ain’t working,” Toney told Miller. Miller told him to be patient. One day, Toney was sparring with a local fighter named Willie McIntyre. “I started whooping him,” Toney said. “Everything started coming.” Watching the two of them fighting against each other, I realized they look very much alike LOL.

Baek put up a better fight than I expected. You could've definitely given him the 2nd round. But whenever Julian landed flush, he got his man like usual. Jackson is super slow and, at least in this fight, wild. I guess that says a lot as to why MacCallum beat him.
