This reminds me of the kind of stuff we used to hear on Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. It's just so good and wholesome. When you're a kid, you don't realize how exceptional the musicians and the music was on that show. But looking back--this is it, man. This is that sound that belongs in public space.

What I really love about JL is how he elevates tunes out of a typical 'genre' or stylistic classification. Not that it particularly matters, but there'd be very few people not into Jazz who would identify this performance as having roots in the jazz tradition. His music really benefits from that approach I think.

Thank you for giving us this moment of pathos, peace and joy. I started playing in 64, moved to Santa Rosa in 80 and sadly only crossed paths at Tall Toad when I was testing guitars and he came in for a lesson. In 72 I went to Ali Akbar Khan College studying Indian Classical Music and believe with my scalloped fingerboard, custom light gauge strings, 50+ years of technical practice can harness the beauty of ALAP when the structure of the Raga is slowly revealed. Think of a beautiful women slowly removing her glove never to quick to reveal all her beauty. Thank you Julian for the grace of your playing and expression. Peace brother.

Glad to know that Chanting is someone else' s favorite song. I recommend everyone who listens to this version to go and listen to Ornette s original (1988) to be amazed by its simple greatness. And also pay attention to his coloring the sound (on Trumpet!!!!) and the fact that he chose NOT to improvise on this composition a seemingly simple 1 4 5 in A flat Major. P.S. I once told Ornette that he should be in the Talent Deserving Wider Recognition category on Trumpet in DownBeat polls. İncredibly difficult trumpet playing considering timing and tone colors.
