Built between 1949 and 1995 by architect Philip Johnson, The Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, has become a place of pilgrimage for lovers of modern and contemporary painting and sculpture. Its position as an art mecca comes thanks to the patronage of its owners, Johnson and his partner, American art critic and curator David Whitney, who both passed away in 2005. Designed initially as Johnson’s residence, the site grew to house the couple’s ever-growing art collection, which includes pieces by Donald Judd, Bruce Nauman and Julian Schnabel. I felt a sense of peace the very moment the camera went inside the house. The bunker with art is nice, and I can see where one may need both, and the luxury of having both spaces is a blessing. The God given light is so magnificent and I feel like Johnson let it guide him.

Iconic ! I remembered seeing all those blueprints, descriptions and long details written on handouts... our tutor showed in Architecture school back then

I worked with Phillip Johnson around late 80s-early 90s time frame. In his application, he wrote an artist/architect designer statement 3 pages type written discussing his personal philosophy. It was pure poetry that brought many to tears. I shared that with many young designers over the upcoming years. He ready was an artist of great commitment.

He also helped design WTC and said there is no way planes brought those buildings down if I remember right.

@@sharksport01 The planes had only flown from Boston and were almost fully loaded with thousands of gallons of fuel. Steel loses a lot of its strength when it gets hot. It doesn't have to melt, just get hot. Each floor was made of relatively light steel trusses with concrete slabs on them. There were no intermediary columns, only the outer steel skeleton, and the concrete elevator shaft core. Once a couple of floors got soft and collapsed, their weight landed heavily on the ones below and everything was pulled down by the gathering weight of additional floors.

@rudolphsturling5236 6 жыл бұрын
iedei iedei that’s a non-answer. we all understand what you’re saying. hayden wants a specific model/brand. an arri alexa may just be another camera but compared to a canon 60d... if you had to duel someone wouldn’t you want the 30 round automatic rifle instead of the civil war era 1 shot musket? or is it not about the gun? lol

Hayden Moon i would assume they are using a camera with built in nd’s. i doubt nowness is going around with a camera that needs a mattebox for these docu style pieces. it would be too time consuming.

Philip Johnson's Glass House video I'm sure I'm the last one to comment on the influence of Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House must have had on Mr. Johnson's Glass House. Both beautiful, iconic in perfect settings. Just say'n

@deezynar
@deezynar 4 жыл бұрын
Mies's Farnsworth house was designed before Johnson's house was, but I have heard that Johnson had been talking about building a glass walled house for himself before Mies took the Farnsworth commission. Mies may have been spurred to do the Farnworth project with glass walls from Johnson's enthusiasm about it, or Mies may have simply dipped into his own design history and drew on the Barcelona Pavilion. Between the two, I much prefer Johnson's, but If the Barcelona Pavilion had a kitchen and bath, I'd pick it over the other two.
