The Glass House is an iconic Modernist masterpiece located in New Canaan, Connecticut. Designed and constructed in 1949 by the renowned American architect Philip Johnson, this striking structure is celebrated for its minimalist and transparent design. The house consists of a single-story glass pavilion with no interior walls, providing unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape and blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. The use of large glass panels, steel columns, and a flat roof creates a seamless connection with nature and a sense of openness.
Beyond the Glass House, the property encompasses a carefully curated landscape of roughly 50 acres. The surrounding landscape includes meadows, ponds, and various sculptures, creating an artistic and serene atmosphere. The property features several other notable structures, such as the Brick House, which stands in contrast to the transparency of the Glass House with its solid brick walls and intimate interior spaces. The Painting Gallery is another significant addition, showcasing Johnson and Whitney's extensive art collection, which includes works by prominent artists like Frank Stella and Andy Warhol.
Over the years, the Glass House has been meticulously preserved and maintained as a National Trust Historic Site, ensuring that future generations can continue to appreciate its beauty and significance. As a living embodiment of Philip Johnson's design philosophy and artistic sensibilities, the Glass House stands as a timeless testament to the power of architecture to engage with the natural world and inspire creativity for generations to come. Today, the Glass House is open to the public, allowing visitors to experience firsthand the brilliance of Philip Johnson's vision and his harmonious integration of architecture with nature.

I think the one thing that make's this house so wonderful is the absolute perfection in the scale and proportion of the house. Even the furniture and landscape is proportional . So many contemporary architects get so wrapped up in their own egos that they fumble these basics.

Another great installment in this series. There's something about the simplicity and elegance of this house that makes it differently appealing than the other homes that have been covered. Gwen seemed like the perfect person to talk about the history of the house, with her knowledge and understated delivery.

Johnson had a complicated past.... I am not in favour of cancel culture, and fully support these efforts to preserve the glass house. I do think it's important though to state - and confront - what Johnson said was his inspiration for it.

this reminds me of a place i saw maybe 6 years ago when I was living in Bali, at the time it was abandoned but it's probably completely leveled at this point. It was a beachside building, likely a house but I'm not sure, made almost entirely of glass with only a few concrete/metal beams for structural integrity. It was seriously magnificent even in its sad abandoned state, with stairs of glass, walls of glass, not just clear class but carved, frosted and textured glass too, it had huge mass of seaglass "pebbles" as a ground-cover (one of which I kept). Memory is a bit hazy, but I still remember how cool it was.

I automatically think of the glass church (Wayfarers Chapel) in California. It’s mainly used for weddings. They had to cancel their wedding schedule, for at least a year, to address the shifting land in the area. Hopefully the structure won’t be damaged. The glass church was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Mentions MOMA but then jumps to him going back to school in his 30's to study architecture. Sadly, he spent his 20's as a forceful proponent of American fascism and all the ugliness of that movement. He did say later that it was his greatest regret to have been involved.

It's why we need to have less people on this planet - humans needs more space as well as wild nature. Just remember - this property is about the size of biggest parks in Paris, and in each you can have thousand of people simultaneously. In Paris - and much worse in NYC - on 50 acres you will have about 4000 people living around the year, with 10 times less trees. Some streets don't have a single tree. Or just 1-2. Too many people = too many problems, and reduced quality of life. In Africa they have to stop making 4-6 children - or African nature will mostly disappear by the end of this century. And without African forests - same applies to South America, India, Indonesia and other places - nature will be so degraded that life will get worse worldwide.
