Julian, another fantastically done video. I am so glad you filmed this when you did as I spent most of the afternoon yesterday cleaning my engine and doing minor repairs and best of all, getting my car running again (and strong!) after a long period of sitting. The main reason I was motivated to work on the car was because I knew the final difficult-to-obtain intake pieces I ordered from a distant land were arriving and I would be able to finally run the car with a filter. It's an E30, so the fact that I am pulling air from the high beam area (just fore of the radiator, in the grill) is perfect based on your explanation. I drove her 100 miles in on a calm, crisp, 35-degree (F), dry night and really noticed an improvement in top end (80+++++) and throttle response, especially because the stock air box on the E30 is very, very convoluted and restrictive. It was also the first time I felt really comfortable shaking down the car on the wiiide twisties since I've owned her, so it may have been a combo of both. Can't wait to get back on the track. You book will be so very helpful if it's anything as well-done as your videos. Thank you again. Alex

I'd imagine boosting intake efficiency through modding duct work and some Areo mods would be a decent way of giving a small bump to fuel use and power

i lost my intake snorkel on my ef falcon, i think ill use the bellmouth where the foglights go routed to my airbox using silicon hose from supercheap, i also made a plywood undertray that goes to the back of the engine, it is open on both sides of the engine for now but completely covers the whole bumper area with smooth curves

I often wonder between a hood scoop and a longer hose routed to the radiator area, my particular vehicle is the kia cerato koup 2009, and it has a scoop at the front and middle right where the bonnet front lip is. hmm

Two pressure measurements - taking about 5 min in total - will tell that answer exactly. No guesswork needed.

I love your video's and There's a lot of info I'll be using on my project car, a boxy Volvo estate. However I hear something that is often used when talking about cooler air and that is that it contains more oxygen. I always understood that it's just more compressed but the percentage of oxygen stays the same, 21%. So by being more compressed it just means more air hence more oxygen but the same percentage. I'll be buying your book any minute now.

Does the height (relative to ground level) of the intake opening make any difference? If two intake locations were compared, and pressure at the two points was exactly equal, would an intake 100mm above the throttle body outperform an intake 100mm above the road, or would performance be identical? That is, is gravity relevant? I've wondered if downdraught carb and throttle bodies have an inherent advantage over otherwise identical sidedraughts.

6:40 actually my friend just jumped from an 165 giclet to a 205, to compensate the new intake system at 200km/h (wide band tuned). And it doesn't even have a bell mouth nor the filter is sealed in a box, just a dam around it collecting right next to the headlight vs open turbo

So by blocking my radiator partially for fuel economy, and then running a hose from my intake to that high pressure zone created by the bodywork, I can get even more fuel economy.

How do you keep water out? Do you discuss this in your books?
@JulianEdgar
@JulianEdgar 3 жыл бұрын
No I don't discuss this in my books. Unless you are fording water deeper than the intake, there won't be an issue. Most factory intakes have a drain hole (eg a hole at the bottom of the airbox) and you can follow the same approach with a new intake. If you live in a very wet area, just put a shield over the intake mouth (as again many standard cars do) to stop direct precipitation flowing in.

MAP sensor typically not sensitive enough. We're not talking about a lot of pressure. Use a manometer or Magnehelic gauge. It's usually about enough to make up for the pressure drop through the filter - it's not a turbocharger or supercharger!
