It's possible the U.S. (and Sweden), if they are both already qualified at that point, will choose to rest their starters, a la Belgium-England from last summer's men's World Cup. Never said it is not possible. But as a expert they should use the facts and go by who is better currently. They didn’t do that and just said, won’t lose in the same year twice so USA win. And you can think it like this instead: how many teams have lost to the same opponent twice in a year in comparison? It then becomes wishing with bias because it’s not predicting, it’s having faith in a team in which they support.

I just think Canada have dropped slightly since 2015 where as Australia has lifted. Yet having said that they have both had an "average" year this year. Personally I have Australia being knocked out by The Netherlands in the Semi's. They are certainly a bigger threat right now not just for Australia but for all teams compared to Canada.

This is not patriotism in my opinion, because patroits have the 'moral capacity' to admit shortcomings of their country. They can critique its actions, concede constructive criticism or in this case it would allow them to maybe make a case for another team. Nationalists however dont do that for the most part solely because they think their country is exceptional and better than other countries. It's like a religion and once somebody has to say anything about their country it better has to be positive. Just pointing that out, because patriotism is totally fine even in sports because it still allows people to view scenarios rationally. On the other hand, nationalists tend to have a distorted view of the world or their opponents.

They did not predict Australia 2nd of their Group behind Italy. - So it was Norway vs Australia. but Norway qualified. It was another 3rd place than China: it was Cameroon against England. - But England was a safe bet for the 1/4 finals. Kate was totally right about Nigeria 3rd instead of South Korea, who did not qualify. But they played Germany. Also in this match was Italy instead of Australia as top of the group. So the match was Italy-China instead of Australia-South Korea It was Netherlands who topped their group and not Canada. They did play 2nd placed Japan and beat them. Scotland was not in the last 16. But Germany did win against Nigeria. Sweden got to play Canada in a match of second places. And qualified over them. They were a bit optimistic with English speaking nations, but did not put e.g. New Zealand past the group stage. The hype around Scotland was justified, but Argentina, like Italy, out-performed all predictions. 7 misses, but they still correctly picked 6 of of 8 quarter-finalists. That's a decent bracket. But then they did not see Sweden and the Netherlands coming through: empire bias. Let's hope they got it all wrong in the last 4 ; imho England vs Netherlands would make an awesome final.

I'm actually more interested in what Kate Markgraf has to say. I like Julie Foudy, she's a great commentator, but she's very much a homer; Markgraf seems to be more analytical of the two. I think both of them are still underestimating the opposition the USA has to plow through. I can definitely see either Spain or France defeating the USA and it wouldn't be an upset; the competition has improved that much.

I have watched all the games so far and I have to think the winning team will have to overcome the lack of finishing that has plagued the games so far. The best ladies have been finding it hard to get it into the net. I’m hoping we will see offense get better as the tournament takes its toll on the fitness of the less fit defenses.
