They both matured throughout the seasons. You could tell that the whole mess that happened with the TA really shook her, and it helped her grow up. She was forced to take responsibility when Derek showed up at her house. And then when Matt talked to her, it knocked sense into her, and she ended up going back to school. By the time she returned home after finals she was more mature. It was so obvious how much more mature she was in episode 12 of season 5.
