What's up with the hate on Julie. The only reason people like Matt is cause they made him an underdog and everyone felt sorry for him, looking after Grandma with dementia, no parents, not the best football player. Julie got no interesting story lines of her own, she didn't have any real hardships for people to relate to her, they just made her the brat mostly in season 2 but I would argue she was a very supportive girlfriend in season 1, 3 and 4. And everyone let him off the hook when he did dumb stuff to her because they felt sorry for him. All the other characters got interesting story lines except Julie, it's like she was just there for the men. Matt didn't even seem to care about her that much he was always too busy with all his other issues.

As much as I can't STAND Julie's character throughout all of Season 2, I think her portrayal of a often rebellious teenage girl always felt realistic and I def always rooted for these two throughout the course of the show, minus how awful she treated him that one season. Matt will always be like my favorite character in the show, but putting my bias for him aside for a moment, him leaving without giving her a formal goodbye or even not texting/calling for weeks was pretty cold too (especially when she really went to bat for him when losing his father), so I think in the end both made some serious mistakes in the relationship and realized them which just made them stronger together in the end.

Although I didn’t hate Julie, I get why people do. She was an annoying teenage foil sometimes. But the pairing with Matt was pretty perfect because it allowed unique interactions between Matt and the Taylors, which was always one of the more interesting familial relationships on the show. So many sad and funny scenes. It makes me giggle to think about how Coach would be stuck with dealing with Matt and vice versa for the rest of their lives. 😂 Other than season 2 which was bizarre for most of the characters, Julie (and by extension her parents) was always there for Matt. I think the writers did a good job showing by the end that they belonged together because they were constantly making mistakes without each other and because of what Tammy said about how she matured and turned her life around once she was with Coach.

Wow sadly I just discovered this site. So spoiler alert, season 1 is the last we see of a sweet respectful Julie. By the end of the series her character is just a spoiled, disrespectful, cheating adulterous little girl. Even Tyra had more class. She actually gets slapped twice on screen. First time by her mother when she's caught dry humping the Swedish dude then again by the wife of her college teacher. Then to make it worse she actually contemplates running back to him and his little cabin in the woods.

Julie for me, went from being an annoying, teenager to a mature young adult, sure it took 5 seasons, but she and Matt got the happy ending they deserve. Julie for the most part with Matt, was supportive and sweet as she had someone her age to care for, her behaviour in season 2 was justified as she was insecure about being a big sister and had her father leave them for long periods of time, which does take an emotional toll on teenagers. Say, what you want about her, but I feel her arc, (which was the longest on-going arc of the Series), was one of the most relatable and insightful arcs of the Series.
@thelegacyofgaming2928 Жыл бұрын
Didn't she cheat on Matt? You find that relatable? Gross
@burritogamer39844 ай бұрын
yup, I honestly check out when people don't even give Julie a chance. I also feel Matt made misteps too in their relationship and learned from them like Julie did. after that incident with the swede, Julie definitely regretted it almost immediately and saw the consequences of her actions in that Matt didn't just get back together with her. he dated around and it was about a year before they rekindled their relationship. and Matt left for Chicago without telling Julie properly and she was broken hearted but by the end he knows he should not let her go because his love is so strong (when he runs for her car before she goes back). I feel like it was so realistic and these down periods actually strengthened them and taught them to be better to each other. maybe some people want more of a fairytale romance but I feel that puppy love phase was all of s1 for matt and julie and after we see the realistic progression of a sweet couple into a more mature and committed relationship and they made it. the ending was so fulfilling

I will explain why Matt and Julie were perfect for each other. Matt is a caring person, he wants to help and care for people, so in effect, he has what could be called a "Knight in Shining Armor" complex. He wants to do the right thing, to help, to be the listener and the anchor, although he's young and he's not sure if he can handle it, since his dad couldn't and he wonders if he's made of "better stuff" than his dad. Julie is stong, but still young. As Matt grows and realizes that he perhaps he is capable, he wants to care for her and since Julie is the type of girl that is sweet, like his grandmother, he's comfortable opening up to her. Her size, her kind nature, freckles and overall sweetness just totally wins him over. He could no more treat her poorly (sleep with her and dump her) than he could hurt his own grandmother. She is too innocent and pure for that, Matt's heart can see that and is drawn to it, knowing that it will be a place of safety. He has no interest in "conquering" her or in dominating her in any way, and is totally tuned into her feeling. Julie, on the other hand, is not entitled like some might say. She has two smart and caring parents and she should not have to apologize for that, as that's not what makes a privileged, spoiled kid. She's trying to find her way, and emerge from the pretty big shadow of her parents. I think that she inherited the abilities of an "empath" from her mother, and to a smaller degree, her dad. So she can feel Matt's pain, and his struggle, and she can feel his caring nature, it hits her right away, as we can watch first hand. But most people cant do that, most people are too wrapped up in their own drama to see things like that. She knows that Matt is not the biggest and the strongest, but she's not the type that needs to date someone like that validate herself. She gets a higher sense of values from her parents, even though she might not know it or even admit it. So physically, she emphasizes with the fact that he's smaller and vulnerable and this might be someone that needs her, and her heart wants to reach out to him and care for him. These are two characters that we want to root for, we hope they learn their lesson and grow, we all prayed that they wouldn't let the world get in the way and spoil what they had, and could have moving future. In Real Life, perhaps someone would have been stubborn, someone would have said something too terrible to take back, or she would never have forgiven him for leaving without a word. But deep down, they stayed true to young love, and that is something that deep down, so many of us wish we were able to have done when we were their age. IMHO, that's a big part of what makes Matt and Julie's relationship so fulfilling to see work out.
@burritogamer39844 ай бұрын
YES you said everything I would want to say. they are my favorite example of a young love working out, and in order to depict that, they had to show the difficulties and rough patches but also how their strong bond and love for each other prevailed in each case. I also feel it was very balanced in seeing their support for each other. Julie was always so caring to Matt when they are together and became close to his mom and grandma as well as Matt bonding with coach (even if it was tough love) and opening up emotionally. Like I could really picture them as in-laws years down the line, the family get togethers for holidays when they come to visit philly from chicago. I also think the show did a good job in showing that Matt and Julie do have quite a bit in common interests, we know they're the type of couple to go watch foreign art films, indie music concerts, they both are artsy and can have intellectual discussions, chill out at home and read or play scrabble. It always made sense to me why they worked.

When Julie sees Matt with his grandmother for the first time, would a girl today really be ok with it? Really? In todays world, would a girl just laugh to herself and go find someone else? Would a girl really be able to see that as a glimpse into his real character? I saw a female character in another show say to her friend, as they talked about their respective choices in men "when all the other things fade, you'll be glad that he's still a good person. That's what will matter most, how he treats you" But, do girls today really think that way? I don't think so, and that's why what Julie and Matt had is even more special: because its so rare.
