I believe it is far easier to take a big idea and scale it back than it is to make a small idea bigger. I love the fact that you show examples of large scale rooms because it's much easier to cut the size of a room down than it is to make it bigger. So, I can take your large scale examples and make them fit into smaller rooms & homes. I hope others do the same. Great tips! I am a big believer in "use what you have"........shop your house first. Most people , like me, already have furniture (probably gifted), and just at a loss for years as to placement. Other family try to get rid of their unwanted pieces, and now you have a mish-mosh..... and don't really know what is your style. A good start, your favorite color... and favorite pieces. Most of us can't afford a designer, the houses shown or the furniture in them.....we don't live in a showcase........but your tips can be applied and are practical...Thank you:)

I am trying to purchase a new home and it features such a living room - dimensions 21 x 11. I am actually looking forward to this as one end also acts as a passage way to a dining room. Thanks Julie, this hit home. I have a long living area with a window wall on one long side, and a fireplace in the middle, other side. I have a stair way and a door to a bedroom each beside the fireplace, so a chair near the fireplace not really an option if I also want to leave egress space. But the photos you show and your advice gives me a lot of amazing ideas. The window wall isn't straight, it's kind of pointed, and have recently decided not to let the sofas follow that line, but rather be straight following the inner wall. A photo showed such arrangement with a console table behind the sofa and lovely lamps on that console table. I'll try that (but have flower seedlings grow on the table near the window, lol.

Love your content, Julie! I hope you look at new comments to older videos. I have an L-shape not covered in either awkward video. 2 narrow living spaces (one probably designated as formal dining) with a breakfast room next to the dining that we use for dining. So we use the whole L-shaped space for two living spaces. The angle of the L is the semi-corner fireplace, also awkward. And one side of the L is 'the view'. Hard to know how to use all the L space well.

Break it up into two seating groups with sofas that face the focal point. Once can be more informal, lounge type media area and the other for conversation only? Think about your family’s needs and go from there Franklin. Watch my video on how to measure your space for the right furniture 👍☺️

Julie, I'm really loving these videos, thank you so much for sharing your ideas with us! I have an unusual living room layout with a window wall, the main pathway into the house and a "half wall" fireplace that sort of separates it from the dining space. The main wall has very high ceilings and the opposite wall, where the walkthrough is are the stairs, so no wall there, just the rails. It's such an unusual design, which I really like, but is so hard to work with especially since my husband insisted on a 70" TV! Lol First world problems, for sure.

It's so hard to plan around door ways especially when there is a bathroom door facing the living room. What can I do? It's so weird to have the bathroom door directly to the living room (adjacent) to the fireplace.

Julie TY I am so thrilled your doing this series! I love your style, your videos and I so appreciate your awareness of environment impact and Fung Shui. I have an apartment that I know has so much potential. Unfortunately I just don’t know how to best use and design it at all. I try to and redo endlessly so much that I almost no longer enjoy decorating my place ( which has been my Love Since.. TODDLERHOOD!) PLEASE please help me, I give up. I have tried everything I can think of. I so need your eyes on my place. I’m trying to use fung shiu of course, while finding my style. Here’s the challenge. I love the texture and interest of boho, but can’t do clutter, I like clean lines but within a cozy feeling, I love warm neutrals but NOT afraid of color, the apt. Is a very contemporary new build but I love old world architecture, I don’t know when to work w what I have versus when to cover it and change it all, and to add another layer of complexity my daughter and I want to incorporate a sort of “Weasley “ feel to it all ( a nod to the cozy charm of the Weasley family home from Harry Potter) not kitschy on the nose, but a definite quality we yearn for. I also have a odd entrance, where u enter at the bottom of a staircase w a tiny landing spot between last step and door. I actually sent a little info bout myself and family with house pics via Facebook....kinda begging, feeling so stuck, avoiding life DESPERATELY NEEDING our home to support us as opposed to me fruitlessly trying to rack my brain for yet another futile idea. I’d be so beyond thrilled and will graciously accept ANY advice at all. Regardless, I ty for all your amazing work that you share so generously We LOVE seeing your family grow and adore your posts Thank you Jessica and Kiera

Awesome video! Multiple view angles of each room and your room design board example are super helpful! Could you please make a video on a long bedroom (15' x 12') with wide and short windows (e.g. 8' wide x 34" high) on one side, with the entrance on the adjacent wall, close to the windows? Opposite wall is blank. Wide passageway to the bathroom/closet is on the same wall as the entrance door, closer to the blank wall'. Where to place the bed: under the windows, on the opposite side, centered, pushed to the corner? There are other awkward design features as well, but I would have to write a book to explain them all. Thank you for watching Gaila! Start with the blank wall, I imagine you would put your dresser on this wall (with a TV on top if you have one). Then you would naturally face the bed towards this wall. You may even space space for a seating group in the space so separate the bed on one end and demarcate a second zone for another function. Hope this helps!

Hey! So happy to learn about awkward spaces, its been very enlightening. My apartment main door opens into the middle of my living room (which is 16 x 25) on one side of the long wall and a wide opening/ passageway into the dining room area on the opposite wall. On the narrow side there is a full french window looking into a small balcony that further looks into a garden while the opposite wall is blank. I have white marble flooring. The problem is that the door not only divides my room but also enables passersby or visitors to look through and through into my whole apartment if i open it for entrance.

You can block the path with a round entry table without blocking the view at all Shabnam. It’s all about getting creative with furniture placement and allowing it to direct users into the space 👍🏻

Your tips are very helpful! Can you give any advice on furniture placement in a 1200 sq ft 1960 ranch house ? The layout is so awkward with windows and sliding doors all along the rear to the back yard and only 3 small windows in front. It’s an open living room , dining room and another room ( with doors) from the dining room ?? Ugh! Living room has wood paneling and either side of a floor to ceiling red brick fireplace with mantle. I know it is specific but I have no idea where to place what , or what that extra room is even.! Haha Maybe more people have these older small homes that need advice. Very informative video! My problem is a big room - a wall w both a fireplace n a built in tv wall cabinet. At the end of the room there is a glass door leading out to the patio by the wall w next to the tv. I can’t block the door going out w any furniture. The room is big so I have 2 couches, etc. My problem: looks like a huge bowling alley between my tv/fireplace wall n where the living room furniture n rug are placed. Help! It’s such wasted space. I appreciate this video so much! I have an apartment set up exactly like this.. The living room is joined with The dining room. We had just moved in and rushed to buy furniture. However I bought furniture that I envisioned to go together but it definitely does not. The two sofas go well with the table but not the small sectional...and the table is way too big for the space we have, seating 6 people...and to top it off its a rectangle not circle.. so at least I know now that circle will be the way to go! I have a lot of work to do to fix this and from this video at least I know now where to start and feel a little relieved for where to start 😌 One hang up I'm having is that my husband wants his work desk out in the main ideal living room area, in the corner of where the set up would be. Julie, do you know if there's a way to make a work desk work in this kind of area? If not, I might have to just ask my husband to move it to our bedroom.

I also would like to see this video with focus on smaller places with wood stove (small fireplace) and television setups, and open concept from kitchen to dining to Livingroom. My long narrow space is 12ft wide. Bedrooms doors are on the left long wall starting 6ft from end wall. and on the right a long wall with windows 4.5 feet of the ground along the wall. I'm thinking of putting what looks like a wood stove at the end of the narrow space either in the centre of the wall, or to the right at the end of the wall (maybe in the corner). The ceiling is sloped with the higher end to the right wall. Not much room to play with here. Love your videos, I've learned so much. Thank you.

Our living room is where you enter our 1900 Victorian home. The room is broken up by multiple doorways, a set of stairs, and a large picture window. We have detailed tin ceilings, how can I draw the eye up to them? Some people don't notice them even though they are large. Not sure how to decorate our sitting room that has a fireplace as the focal point with a mirror above it, meant for relaxing and reading. We have small family pictures on the furniture next to it. Maybe making them black and white and using them as art for one of the walls. One wall: mirror, another wall: statement art, another wall: monochromatic picture collage but that seems like too much. I love all your tips and ideas about thinking of function. Thank you!

Hi Sarah! Thank you for watching. The best way to draw the eyes up to the ceiling is with strategic lighting. Pendants with a cover that direct light up, wall sconces with uplight, torchiere style floor lamps can work also if you don’t want to hard wire anything

Hi Ms Julie. I have a long a narrow multi functional room with the front and back door along the short ends of it and the kitchen along one of the long walls. So I essentially have one free wall. The space is supposed to serve as a living room, kitchen and dining space. My best idea is to play up the length of room and use furniture with length to make the most of the space. Any tips to what I can keep in mind when thinking about designing the space? I really appreciate your work. Thank you for all the help, because we really find ourselves stumped at times.

Hi Anele, thank you for watching! Definitely breaking the room up into functional zones and using the walls centered on those zones to create a focal point. Lastly anchor each space with a large area rug to further help define space. Hope that helps!

I found the case studies segment useful. Having gone sofa shopping lately, it may have been useful to discuss what scale means. About 90 percent of sofas I saw were chunky whereas I was looking for something lighter with clear legs, low back, and less padding. Still looking for the right piece.

My living room is an open concept with the dining room, have a 32 ft wall to dining, 12 ft wall which separates the small closet and the powder hallway from entrance door leading to the 2nd floor and fronting the powder room is the laundry and kitchen. This was a great episode. It really helped me to put into perspective the challenges of my space. Thank you. I have a 13x13 ft living room space with very high ceilings. The focus point in the fireplace with to long vertical windows on each side. Any suggestions for the design challenge?

Depends on the height of the ceiling, but I would use drapery to dictate what happens with the fireplace. You may opt to finish the fireplace with a natural stone that goes all the way up to the ceiling or a beautiful surround that keeps the eyes drawn down to the seating group. You’re the designer Malaika, you determine how you want the space to look and feel

Can you touch on the subject of wall decor and curtains when a living room has vaulted ceilings with few wall hanging spaces? In my situation I have 2 walls which each have 2 sliding glass doors, 1 wall has a fireplace in the middle (high vault wall) and the kitchen sits to the other side. This video was GREAT!! There's very little actual furniture that can go into the space (tiny was not an exaggeration) but I'm using the taller wall for some customized (fancy word for DIY) shelving and hooks and the lower side just fits my mini wardrobe and shoe racks. It's basically a passage where no one would ever hang out anyways so it'll function as my "walk through closet".

I must say I can't praise the architect more who designed our flat. It's a building of 8 flats built in late 60s in Central Europe. 60m2 and balcony. Here can live 4 people without touching elbows. Even placing of windows is such that it's easy to make many combinations. Even the storage is big enough to put in a lot of things. It's like a small car where you can easily put in a large carpet and drive.

Good Evening Julie. Happy Pre-Thanksgiving. I have an awkward space conundrum for you. We have a three season room that is rectangular. We are using it as our dining room because it sits just beside our zen garden deck way. There are two awkward problems. First the light in the middle of the room is a ceiling fan. I call it the “old southern parlor ceiling fan”. It is white and boring with tulips shaped lights. Whats worse it is not centered on the table it’s centered in the middle of the vaulted ceiling. There is a L-Shaped walk space through the room so centering the table in the room is impossible. The second challenge as it is a sunroom there are more windows than walls. It makes hard hanging featured artwork difficult. The easy thing to do would be using the wall above the windows before the vaulted ceiling begins. Unfortunately that would give the room a ski lodge feel or a grandma’s tchotchke’s on a shelf room. Yeck! I have been trying to convince my spouse we should use thin monorail lighting system and point mini spots onto the table and possibly mini pendants over the table but he balks at that idea. I think using a fan for lighting creates more problems than it solves. Additionally, our table is rectangular but it can convert into a larger square table to accommodate eight chairs.

Hi Barry- you can always get rid of the ceiling fan completely and opt for wall sconces instead to bring more light in. Your electrician can cap the fan or simply convert it to a recessed LED if you require more lifting. Secondly, I love artwork hung in front of windows. Choose the window wall with the bad view (or the worst one at least 😆) and place a large statement art piece there! It’s unexpected, yet provides such a designer look! Good luck! 🙌🏻
