Tasked with preserving the historical floor plan whilst making it more casual and functional, interior design studio Dax I drew inspiration from the architecture and materials of the building and its surrounds, using a series of rich colours to add a sense of depth and elegance to the space. The fiery red of the entryway sets the tone for the apartment and leads into the combined kitchen and dining area, where a compact but fully equipped all-black kitchen subtly contrasts the dark blue-grey (Inchyra Blue) painted walls. A floating sideboard painted in the same Inchyra Blue provides pantry space for the kitchen whilst a round cherry wood dining table fits perfectly into the small corner of the room. With its delicate balance of modernity and heritage, Dax I’s redesign truly feels at home in its surroundings.

I have to agree - in the entrance there's a small closet. But no shoe storage. The bedroom only has drawers below the bed - not ideal to use daily. I'm doubtful that you'll have enough place in the bathroom closet for cleaning supplies, broom or vacuum cleaner. Not to mention almost no concealed storage in the living room - for hobbies. All that can be solved - a bit more storage in the entrance and living room, having a combined washer/dryer... As it is - this flat is sadly only usable for a very minimalist single person. I love the colors and ligtness - but it also has to be functional.

​@@KittynFranky7643in Italy there's a drying rack like that in every kitchen, hidden in a cabinet above the sink. Nothings dribbling down as there's something that holds the water underneath the rack. Usually it's even 2 racks on top of each other and really practical

Love that this small home is very different than most featured on this channel with the high ceilings, beautiful wood floors, moldings, and rich colors. It feels very rich and homey. The space looks much bigger than 495 sq. ft.!

I think there is a perception darker colours will make the rooms smaller so I love seeing designers showing how well bold colours in small spaces can look. The design respects the buildings heritage whilst also being modern, and they have dealt well with the challenge of designing good layouts in rooms that have a lots of angles in them. 10/10 from me!

As someone who grew up in a very colourful house, I would say people are right. The house always felt small and dark to me. I think colourful rooms work only if there are many and very big windows. With my own place, I opted for white with accent walls and colourful decorations. It works just as well!

​@@Victoria-oo3iy Perhaps, though since one can't tell just how big and how many windows you need to avoid feeling claustrophobic, I think the colours are also an issue. It's a bit of a gamble to go for them. Plus, you can get sick of them, they can impact your mood... It's a lot better with accent walls. The colours are less aggressive and overwhelming, but you still escape the monotone white/beige/grey walls.

Yeah, if it was my place I would definitely need more storage than that. A LOT more hanging storage. However the way they used the footprint is spare enough that one could probably add in some understated storage furniture if needed, without making the flat feel too cluttered. (I would also need a bigger drying rack!) I agree that it seems designed for short stays rather than longterm living.

The flat used to have a gorgeous large bedroom with a balcony, generous sized open living-dining room and a separate kitchen. Now it has a cupboard size bedroom with no storage, a giant hall with cooking equipment in it and a quirky living room separated from the rest of the flat... Very odd spacial planning... The new "kitchen" is only good for reheating shop bought meals, hence the entire space is wasted.

But I am always stunned that there are people out there who live minimalistic and dont't seem to cook or don't need storage and space for lots of books, their hobbys, sports gear, plants and so on - like I do. 🤣

I love the textiles, colours and fabrics. The overall look is beautiful. The kitchen is spacious, and the use of dark colours just works for me. I do have a few quibbles though - the kitchen doesn’t have enough storage space, the sink’s separation from the counter would make doing dishes complicated, and there’s little to no storage space for clothing. I wouldn’t be surprised if this apartment is just a pied-à-terre.

Nice apartment, and it does look quite large. Though it lacks storage, storage for the kitchen as well as for the bedroom. The kitchen is compact but likely not functional for consistent cooking. True there is a floor to ceiling wardrobe in the entry area as well as under the bed, but it is really limited. Unless the apartment is just for one person who does not cook so often. Also I did not see any proper bookshelves in the living room. It's quite bare and minimal. Likely the style that fit the owner preferences.

I love the lack of too many cupboards full of junk and the minimal amount of stuff on open shelves, etc. This type of area fits my minimalist brain. I can see how it wouldn't work for some. The kitchen would be perfect for me.

its weird that the kitchen is so big (by that apartment's standards) but has a really small empty fridge and no freezer. Either the owner buys their food fresh every single day or they just eat at work and never actually use the kitchen.

Yeah. The wardrobe would be the single feature I would want to add as well. Berlin apartments almost always come with storage space in the basement for the items you only need a few times a year. But for shirts I would definitely want a little bit of hanger space.

To everyone mentioning the small fridge: This is a common size in Europe and I can tell you from my own experience that it works perfectly well. You just can't shop enormous amounts, instead do grocery shopping more than once a week.

Respectfully, an architect is so not a designer(!). Love this, but not including the garish hall colour. To me, another one of the caveats is the distance between the built in dish dry mat and the actual sink. I do like the turquoise-gray in the main room which has quite a nice compact design. Some of the rooms felt a bit blank compared to the others. I do quite like the stunning wallpaper + moulding on the one room’s ceiling. Will try watching this again. Thanks.

For me to live here I'd need a bigger fridge, a door to the bedroom, black-out curtains in the bedroom nook, a proper size closet for my clothes, a proper bookshelf and a different design of bathroom tiles; and plants. Not everyone is obsessed with closets and clutter. One could add furniture for your clothes. A bigger fridge would be overkill for a small apartment for one person. It's a beautiful apartment. I'm not always a huge fan of bold or dark wall colours (although they are growing on me) since lighter paint colours make apartments seem much more open, airy, and spacious, but luckily, the floors are a beautiful light wood tone and the ceilings, window frames, door frames, and doors are white, so they offset the potential heaviness of those darker colours. Plus, those dark colours do add a certain sense of history and luxury to the space. Bravo! :)

A good solution for a minimalist design while retaining an old world feel that the the client clearly favours. For me, I would prefer another solution for the kitchen food preparation with an exhausted/filtered system above the cooking range. 🖤

Some people miss the fact that if you live in a small space, you have to downsize your belongings, too. There is plenty of storage if you only keep what you truly need (and only you know what that is for you). A week or two worth of clothes (maybe and extra week or two of off-season clothes), a couple of coats/jackets, couple pairs of shoes. In the bathroom, just the basics. In the kitchen 4-6 plates, bowls, and silverware settings, a couple of pans/pots, and food storage containers. I only have about 30 books in my house and those are mostly recent purchases. I use the library a lot or buy used books that I pass on to neighbors or thrift stores when I'm done. I have a pretty big fridge, but if mine were smaller, I'd be stricter in what I could have in the kitchen. Prioritize what you need for your lifestyle and live in a place that fits that lifestyle.

That refrigerator and kitchen are really small! I hope it was done because the client does very light cooking and not because the kitchen looked better with everything shrunk below the counter. Either way, I would consider downsizing to a micro dishwasher to add more storage space.

We mostly have this kind of refrigerators in Germany. To be honest I had and still have one and I can tell you years ago we were six people ! within our householt. I cooked at least one warm meal every day with resh products . But I had a freezer the same size as well. I know Germans are weird people.

Rather than a weekend house, it appears to me to be more of a pied-à-terre that one might use during the week when one has to be close to work, retreating to a larger house, perhaps, on weekends. No matter its use, the color palette is beautiful - the entry color looks identical to mine, a very deep coral color. It does make a very surprising and inviting statement.

The color/tone choices - especially for the entryway, central dining , and living rooms - are very beautiful, sophisticated, serene. There are elements in the bedroom , as well as the bath, that carry that seem theme, and are clever . For the subtlest reasons, however, I found the bedroom wanting, chilly, and wished for a little more "embrace," softness, gravity, luxury. Perhaps it was the color chosen for that space, or the white, more generic-looking platform that held the bed? Not sure. All and all, the physical apartment has handsome bones , and the design choices within - wonderful and informed.

I agree. I liked the use of color overall in this apartment, but the colder blue used in the bedroom clashed with the beautiful, warm blue used in the adjacent kitchen. I think the bedroom definitely could use a more complementary color. Also, while the wallpaper on the ceiling is clever and kind of fun with the old molding, I don't think looking up at the ceiling last thing before bed, and first thing in the morning would be ideal for me in terms of calming and destressing my mind.

Really nice and comfy colors. The flat really seems way larger than its blueprint suggests. The cablemanagement for some of the lamps could be nicer though😁 but wall plugs are always limited in historical buildings. Thanks for sharing it with us!

It's a good effort, overall. Nonetheless, the living room looks unfinished and the cornices are not integrated into any of the rooms. And those cornices look gorgeous.

Some nice elements- great bathroom, great light. But clearly not a space for a person to live full time. The kitchen sink is laughably inefficient and the place as a whole has no soul.

I love Never Too Small for showing that you don't need a lot of square meters to create a home. But this clearly is not a home. It's someone's second or third apartment in an area (Bergmannkiez) that used to house working class immigrant families.

For real, I wish they'd be more forthcoming about which places are designed as rentals or as someone's 2nd home. I see the comments saying the fridge size is normal in Germany, but the design of the kitchen and the sideboard "storage" just screams airbnb to me.

Lovely, although I would have put uppers in the kitchen for pantry and crockery and left the sideboard for other items like games and crafts.

What an amazing size ...space apartment....and extremely beautiful architecture..it fabulous that it was kept into the design. The style and colours also blend in well...i would think they dont need much in the kitchen as might be easier to eat out locally, looks like they had plenty around the area.. i would just personally soften a few more areas with more cozier furniture....i love it .. well done to the architect.
