I can see why people started this in older smaller homes, but its definitely gotten out of hand. I saw someone separated with a framed out window wall like in a craftman home and liked that. Our house is open layout after previous owner remodeled after a fire. It's a beautiful home but I think I'm burned out on it.

Julie, you’ve hit the nail on the head for me when you said that I could feel “paralyzed” by my open space home. We’ve lived here for four years already and I just can’t figure out how to arrange furniture or what to buy to replace the old furniture. Then there’s the windows, the lanai, the lighting, etc. So much. This was my very first video to see and I was encouraged. I look forward to watching more. Thank you.

These tips are excellent! I have an open plan, and I had always wanted a TV corner. Not until this year, I did what Julie says “Define the areas”. After a lot of thinking I managed to get 4 distinct areas: sitting room (with no TV!), dining area, TV corner and kitchen with an island and bar stools. I am thoroughly enjoying it!

Enjoy all the Julie Khuu regardless if they are applicable to me. The cadence of the video from room to room allows me to focus in on objects before you cut to another room. Because you linger longer in the areas you are discussing, i dont have to constantly stop video and go back a few frames to catch that moment again and again. I really appreciate that. I have a very uniquely awkward small open living space that has sat empty for three years because it is that awkward. I am emotionally paralyzed for fear of bringing out the worst in it. I look forward to more problem defying strategies. Thanks a Bunch!

Looking at this again, as I need some ideas. The condo I'm looking at has a good sized kitchen tucked into a back corner of the great room LR/DR. The original cupboards are painted cream, good hardwood floors from the entry across and into the kitchen. I think the solution is cabinet colour to echo colour used in the main room. Plus filling in the area between the top of the cabinets or doing away with upper cabinets altogether. Thanks Julie - love your videos.

Some people mentioned that the benefits of open floor plan is to observe everything and everyone at the same time, if u have kids or elderly that u want to keep an eye on. Some other people are used to having rooms with purpose, dining for eating, kitchen for cooking, living for watch tv and gathering, etc. So it's back to the living habits of the clients. As a designer, i always ask that before designing layout for the house. But for limited space, such as apartment, i suggest open floor plan, for a spacious feeling.

Great topic. I sit here in my living room, 20x14, high ceiling has a "high/low" bend like a "swimming pool" shallow/deep end, and a ledge as well. We painted it all white years ago and plan to add white modern ceiling trim. Fingers crossed!

I love this series! Thanks for all the helpful tips. I've been struggling to design an open plan room with different levels (sunken/platform). Any tips on how to design such a space and maintain separation in a cohesive way would be so helpful

Hi Julie, I want to thank you for helping me with your video on finding your design style. It really helped me to define my open concept kitchen, living, and dining. Now I need help with how to style my entry/living/office with a vaulted ceiling which is only vaulted on one side the opposite of the entry door. So many of our California homes have these "formal" living rooms right as you enter the home. I watched your entry video as well and I do have a small defined entry in the same space. Now I'm trying to fit not so much an office but a study/living room in the space. Besides the vault, I have wall to wall, two sets of french doors on the wall next to the vault so it adds to the challenge. I would love to hear some ideas of how to make the space not be awkward? A part of me was even thinking of closing the space off and adding french or barn doors to the entry leading into this space to make it like a real room instead of just directly open as you walk in and it would create a real entry, narrow but an actual entry. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thank you!

If the space is already open concept, I would use furniture to help delineate space Linda. Too often, we are focused on the ceiling or awkward elements instead of the floor/furniture plan which is how you will get the focus off the angled walls. Use the back of sofas/ accent chairs to help divide up the space and distinguish the different zones. No need for add’l walls that will close up the spaces. Unless your home is huge of course. You make that call. Thank you so much for watching! 🙏🏻😊

@@JulieKhuu our home is so narrow and with a family of 6, it’s been challenging. With our open concept we have 2 entry ways that are throwing me off. I swear to this video was refreshing as you nailed EVERY CONCERN I had! I’ll be studying this video a few more times☺️🤗

Very informative. Thank you for all the examples. My new home is open concept. Would you say a ceiling fan with a light is just as good as a chandelier over the living room space?
@JulieKhuu3 жыл бұрын
No lol. You can’t quite capture ambience with a ceiling fan. If it’s a must, layer wall sconces in the room to amp up the mood

What do you think about floor plugs for open concept areas? I personally hate the look of it but we're building a huge open concept kitchen/dining/living area and I'm afraid no floor plugs will make the area unusable for practical stuff. Thank you for doing this series!!
@JulieKhuu4 жыл бұрын
I specify them all the time GV. Absolute must so you don’t have unsightly and dangerous cords dangling everywhere. Of course the kicker is your space already has to be thought out so you know exactly where to locate the plugs.
