This vinegar, soap sugar heck does not work in my house. Not one time in the several times that I've tried it in 2 different homes. I've lived in have the gnats went into this concoction. It just doesn't work, and I think it depends on where you live or whatever, but it doesn't work here where I live. I've tried it over and over and over. An inch layer of sand works well, and also looks good. The sand dries out quickly and the adults can't dig into it to lay eggs in the damp soil beneath it, and any current baby gnats can't get up through it. Just another tip.

I tried this today on all of my plants. It seems to have worked within hours. Those gnats have been driving me nuts for weeks. They literally fly up my nose when I'm sitting on my couch because I have two floating shelves of plants above my couch. I did take the one plant outside that looked the most infested and dumped the dirt, washed out the pot with hot soapy water and replanted the plant. I gave all my plants a treatment with the peroxide and water. Thanks for this video. I'm hoping within the next week I'll be completely rid of those gnats/buggers!

@@Trulynay87 none of what she did help me get rid of the gnats in my house plants. I’m trying another method using Mosquito Bits, and putting a layer of sand around the top of the soil just like she did with the steel wool and rocks. I’m also bottom watering all my plants. I watched another lady video and I’m hoping it helps. Soaking the Mosquitoe bits in hot water in a aquarium bag ( net type of bag with a zipper on it ) for 10-20 minutes let the water cool off take the aquarium bag out of water can and pour the water in a tray big enough for each flower pot and let it sit in there for 24hrs I also poured some directly on top of one plant that too many gnats, after 24 hrs I put sand not play sand I googled what kind of sand to use in plants brought it off Amazon as well as the aquarium bags. Brought a 6pack of gnat zappers that plug into the wall outlets and finally I have some relief!!! I’ve never had gnats this bad before I repotted all my house plants and I don’t overwater them but after repotting them the gnats came I said it’s war in my house and they had to go.

I have noticed that there is so much online about how to get rid of gnats, however, I have not seen anything about plant lights. Gnats are also attracted to light; there is a plant light that attracts the gnats, and the light intensity is of such that it burn the gnats up as they fly into it. This light is placed in close proximity to your plants and you will be surprised at the results. The light also helps to promote rapid growth of the plant. Along with good watering control, I find that this works best for me. No use of any kind of chemicals whatsoever.

Be aware steel wool rusts like crazy and disintegrates in a very short time. Instead I’d try several layers of cheese cloth, nonmetal window screen (the ones that keep out no-seeum bugs), or even coffee filters or heavy duty paper towels. Otherwise, this is a great tip that I’m using... right after I smush this annoying little fly that’s on my screen. No joke.

Thank you for the video, great info here as I had a gnat infestation in my Acrea palm’s soil. I did a weak soap solution w/ Dr.Bronner’s peppermint Castile soap. Ratio is 3/4 TEASPOON soap to 1 cup of warm water (only make what you will use that day). I put it in a spray bottle, shook it up and sprayed it directly on the soil. Some gnats were sitting on the rim of my plant pot so I sprayed them directly and it killed them on contact. Its recommended you spray at night and rinse off any extra solution on the leaves and stems in the am. I sprayed the soil only so if you’re spraying leaves probably best to test and see if it harms your plants before you do an all over application. I read the soap solution could cause sunburn on the leaves if left sitting on leaf surface in the sun (idk tho) so when in doubt test it 🤷🏿‍♂️. After googling this is a quote on a website explaining why it works “Insecticidal soap, also known as horticultural soap, works to kill soft-bodied insects by disrupting their sensitive cell membrane. Essentially, it coats and penetrates the natural protective barrier around their body, which causes them to desiccate - or dry out.” Said you can do an application every 4 - 7 days. I haven’t seen a gnat all day yet but it’s only been a day. Will report back after a bit with an update. Hope this helps.

The "gnat trap jar" is the best advice I've ever received! I don't have plants, but I was looking for a way to help with gnats. I live in an apartment and during the summer months, I notice more gnats, but for some reason, I would have a gnat infestation...I would see them in the bathroom, in the kitchen, when I'm watching tv at night (the tv light attracts them), when I I would eat, I always cover my food with a paper towel because the smell attracts and they come buzzin. I figured it could have been the drains, so i use drain cleaner and even garbage disposal cleaner (though i never put food waste in my garbage disposal). I contemplated getting some black outdoor latern since i saw videos that it worked but i didn't know how sanitary it would be for in-house. Last summer, someone came and did a "fog" spray technique in my apartment to get rid of the gnats, but I still saw them bit by bit later though not nearly as bad. This summer it's almost been the same thing, but i increased the number of gnat jars I have from 2 to 4. I placed a jar by my bathroom sink, by my kitchen sink, by window (notice the sunlight attracts them), and by my bananas (i had actually stopped buying bananas because of the gnats)....and THE JAR WORKS. This week alone I've seen so many new dead gnats in the jar (the bodies floating on the surface of mixture). I'm grateful that I don't have to continually be a ninja to kill them all 😀; the jar has helped so much. Thank you so much for sharing.

I’ve tried all these methods and none of them worked 😩 I have a lot of indoor plants and although it seems to work for a short time they just keep coming back. The Apple cider vinegar made my whole house stink and they didn’t even go in it. The hydrogen peroxide seemed to work, but they only sell that in small bottles here in supermarkets and I had to get 20 of those to get to all my plants and they were back a week later. Some of the adults just flew around it as if they liked it 🤷‍♂️ I’ve decided to put all the plants outside in an undercover area because nothing I do seems to work at all

@@JulieKhuu I let them dry out completely and they’re still in there doing somersaults on top of the dry soil. The spot they love is underneath the pots. The get down in the trays and get in the holes at the bottoms and the tops. I let one plant die just to see how dry the soil could get to see if they would leave the plant, but they were still in it when it was bone dry and the plant was dead. My shelves are covered in a layer of dead gnats weekly. Nothing I do helps 😞

Knats were my pet peeve last year and after some research, this was a great reactive video for when you already have these plants, but if you happen to start from seed you can take it a step further and sterilize your potting or starter mix by pouring boiling water into the soil and cover for 15 minutes then drain, and that'll kill the eggs. Then follow up with this method if needed.

Sorry Julie, you have the right idea about the plants and gnats but the wrong insect. Fruit flies don't breed in indoor plant soil but in fruits or vegetables. Never in over 30 years of professional interior landscaping or tropical plant wholesale in greenhouse, have I ever deal with fruit flies in indoor plants but with fungus gnats or shore fly. These are completely different flies in shapes and habits. Plus vinegar only work for fruit flies not plant gnats.
