Ive commented on a few of this series already. Im building a 550sq foot tiny house- i am a young (50year ) disabled member of the granny gang. I started using a wheelchair in jan n the house i am living in now isnt accessible. So im trying to do a STYLISH, ACCESSIBLE, TINY house. I feel like im losing my mind. The 🏠 will be done in aug. Opening shelving strikes me as a cleaning problem, especially in the kitchen. Dust is bad enough, but combined with steam from cooking or even air borne grease, no thanks. I can’t believe I am disagreeing with Julie, she is a goddess! ;-)

I think it depends. While I would never do ONLY open shelving, open shelves not right next to the stove, and for the very commonly used stuff (everyday drinking glasses and dishes) are getting emptied our frequently enough, at which time I’d give them a quick swipe.

Yes to the style guide! Also, I love the open shelf idea, but more for decor than dishes. The hygiene issue primarily. And no more chips or mismatches in my kitchen. New apartment, new dishware and silverware. Another thing that would be helpful for apartment or house rent- temporary changes without pissing off the landlord. We can't paint at all, let alone add tile or wallpaper. I have added lots of color with furnishings and accent pieces. Thinking of adhesive removable tile in the kitchen. Love your channel!

I had my 1999 builder-grade 11.5'x12' kitchen renovated and finished in summer 2018. For that renovation, I went with 42"H wall cabinetry that rose to the 8' ceiling (don't forget to extend that over-the refrigerator cabinet forward to 24"D and support it with a cabinet panel wall). In this cabinet set, I added one lighted wall cabinet at the end, featuring a mullion door with hammered glass that lightened things a bit. Instead, I limited open shelves to the box bay window to maintain max storage capacity with the cabinets. I hung three 20"Lx10"Wx2"D floating shelves (using "Sheppard" shelf brackets) on the wall of the box bay window (I hung them during fall or winter last year). These shelves hold a small set of cookbooks and a display of cookware and serveware pieces. On the other wall of the box bay window, I created a hanging plant wall (did this about 3 days ago) that gets lots of afternoon light filtering through the leaves from the tree next door. Both the lighted wall cabinet and the cookware/serveware display on the floating shelves in the bay window are immediately visible from the front entry door. I went with 16"x16" floor tiles from the Armstrong Alterna series, which not only made a difference in appearance and presentation but also minimized grout lines. Since I wanted an eat-in kitchen, I maintained floor space at the center of the kitchen by placing a rectangular bar height table (59"Lx24"Wx42"H) in the bay window and two bar height chairs with backrests. The taller table also served a secondary purpose of mostly hiding my waste container from view (didn't have a cabinet to sacrifice for holding it). The waste container is mostly not visible until you're standing in the kitchen.

Hi Julie, love your videos and tips. However, not sure that smaller tiles behind hobs with the grease build-up and associated cleaning of more grouted joints. I would always advise large sheet materials like heat resistant glass or large format porcelain tiles.

I love open shelves. I live in a “tiny” condo and our kitchen is 7 feet 3 inches long and it is one-sided. Cabinets are at the ceiling, fridge is under the counter, and the open shelves are in there sections. One small section is 25” with a open shelf built into the base of the upper cabinet. (All things coffee go here for easy everyday access) the other open shelf is part of the upper cabinet that holds a few cookbooks & a few cute usable kitchen items, and along the base of this upper cabinet 39” is the other open shelf that is built into the base. (This houses plates & bowls & glasses). Yes, there’s dusting involved but because we live tiny it has created functionality and it’s a beautiful design feature. I keep it very neat and cute and very clutter free. I think the one thing that people forget is living tiny means living with less. So I’ve picked what I really use. I don’t keep things I don’t use and I feel like I am surrounded by all my favorite things. I also like dusting & oiling my beautiful wood cabinets so they will last forever.

I’m the same Connie! I love the practicality 👍🏻There’s actually barely any dust on my open shelves because my iRobot takes care of the daily dust on the floors!

Thanks for tips especially the shelving ideas and lighting. I am working on area where I can place a small light to highlight wrought iron brackets with wood shelving for cookbooks and display white porcelain items. Going for light gray color on walls. Furniture is Wright iron and black gray floor and a touch on green here and there. Not sure about backsplash, maybe just washable gray paint on walls?

I dislike upper cabinets and think that they are only suitable for extremely tall people. So I'd love to see Julie some video's with walk in pantries and a storage cupboard for a sweeping brush etc etc. Those tall cabinets are a danger hazard as stools or chairs are needed to reach them.
