Agreed on that, me personally im a metal head but a quite a few of the bands i listen to regularly mix in some strings to some songs on top of the heavy drums, detuned guitars/bass and harsh vocals and it ALWAYS adds that extra spice to it!

I think the way this kind of thing is done is that all the preformers are in on it and ready, they just dont know what song they will be playing in advance and wait for somebody to request a song.
