Steam Deck is the greatest gaming device I’ve ever owned. I never been into PC gaming before. And I really haven’t been much of a console gamer since Gen 6 with Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, and GameCube. Ever since I got a Sony Ericsson T616 in January 2004, I was more fascinated by phones by then. Then when iPhone came out in 2007 and I tried Android by Oct 2011, I got more fascinated by smartphones in general. Steam Deck brought me back into gaming. I did own a PS4 and Vita by 2017 after my hiatus with console gaming from 2008-2016. I did start running emulation on my Z Flip3 in 2021 or get my first Switch Lite in Oct 2022. But it’s the Steam Deck that really brought me back into gaming. I use it every day and I’d play a game for hours now. No more 15 minutes spurts. I really enjoy playing a game for a while on it in my car or on a couch. With phones now swapping places with gaming handhelds as being the far less interesting industry to follow, I’ve returned back to gaming because of it. Steam Deck really is a GAME-CHANGER. It’s the iPhone of PC handhelds with an affordable price like many Android alternatives and can be customizable like Android. ROG Ally Z1 Extreme and Legion Go would not be $700 and be double that price if Steam Deck never existed. We need to thank Valve for changing the PC handheld gaming industry forever. Steam Deck is a f-king great device! Loving my new black Tomtoc case for it. My brand new Switch Lite which is my fourth one I bought and I got only two weeks before the Steam Deck is currently not being used much because I want to play my Steam games far more. Why play a weak system like the Switch by this point? And Nintendo isn’t doing people any favors as of late with Yuzu and Citra coming to an end. I’m better off never having Nintendo getting my money ever again. Nintendo is perhaps the greatest game developer but Valve is a far better company to support. F Nintendo.

In a way the PC + Deck is what I really wish the Nintendo Switch was. I wish that I could play Tears of the Kingdom or Metroid Prime in 4k 120fps if I wanted to, while also letting me play the game portably if need be. That's essentially what PC + Deck is, you can play your games with maximum firepower on a big ass screen, or you can play them in your hands anywhere. And the only limit on the game's power at home is how much you're willing to spend on a PC. Most consoles only offer one or the other: the powerful (for consoles) home experience, or the very weak powered portable experience. Versatility is everything. And one last thing: building a really strong PC just made me completely uninterested in owning a PS5. Currently just waiting for Rebirth on Steam. People really don't undersell it: Steam just has a ridiculously high level of customer satisfaction. Easily higher than all three console manufacturers. I'll still buy Switch 2 for those Nintendo games but for everything else, there's Steam.

For me, I’ve been in PC Gaming for 10 years or so. The only issue with it is I work at a desk all day and I don’t want to sit at a desk for my relaxing time unless it’s something I really need my big PC for. The Steam Deck has brought me back to just relaxing in bed and playing a chill game. Also if you ever want to put emulators on it it’s fairly simple. So now I have my hundreds of games on steam as well as basically every game that came out before the Xbox One and PS4 which is insane

The casual dice roll for mug choice. Respect. I got this vid recommended to me because I'm currently circling a Steam Deck purchase. After buying a refurbished 2014 business PC from amazon 6 years ago now, to use as a retro game emulation "console", I found it to be perfectly suitable for actual PC gaming with a few upgrades over that span of time. It's hit it's limit of upgradability without just buying a whole new machine, yet it's still usable for a TON of my backlogged games that I bought from various online sites because digital's one saving grace is you can buy games for literal pocket change that are still $15 a Playstation disk. So I just treat it like a very cumbersome console that has way more functions. Aside from a few titles, I play everything with controller because I don't have a desk for KB&M (which I was never a fan of, anyway.) Like you, physical media will always have my heart when it comes to consoles. Even with digital stuff back on PS3, I set a budget for myself and refused to spend over a certain amount per game because I didn't want to validate a shift to digital media on consoles and I knew in a few years those could go, and on occasion HAVE GONE, _Poof_ out of existence by someone else's whim. I thank goodness I only spent about $15 total on Playstation Home in it's _entire_ run, and usually only the left over change in my PSN wallet. If I could buy a disk on PS5 over a download I would, and still occasionally do, because I like having options. I even frequent GoG for DRM free games because even if it's not a Steam game I know it's MINE (if it's just on a harddrive I can still transfer it elsewhere,) but I also can't keep paying $70 for AAA games. I refuse to. I look at Indie Steam titles and think, if I lost a game I bought for under $9 after some random controversy kills Valve in the future, I wouldn't feel that loss so bad. PC being what it is, someone would likely find a way to unlock the hundreds of cheap titles I amassed to still be played on a PC years from now, even if Steam _did_ go away. I still see myself as a console gamer, that hasn't changed, but the concept of a _console_ is changing. It's still ease of use, and the Steam Deck provides that. Regardless of my current feelings about the company, I'd be remiss in not crediting Nintendo for starting the idea of portable/dockable gaming device, but it's to their detriment when someone more likable and consumer friendly steps in front of them and does it _better._

Ya i stopped gaming on my pc around 5 years ago. Takes up to much space and not enough time to play. When i heard about steam deck and how capable they are i bought a used one for 350 and it came with the steam deck dock. Having a large steam library already it was no problem picking up and playing. I never thought i would be gaming on a handheld but now i prefer it. the flexibility the performance and the ability to cast onto a tv like a console (when i habe to tv to myself) is amazing. One last thing that doesnt get talked enough about is the steam decks ability to press the power button and save the game in place, im not sure what that feature is called but its super useful for ahort bursts of gaming

I don't own a TV so 🤷🏻♀️ I started out with the black and white Gameboy went to a Gameboy color, then a GBA then the PS1, PS2, but then I stopped all console gaming and spent the next 18 years of my life on World of Warcraft. Then when the Animal Crossing Switch came out, I bought that and have been playing with it a lot and it definitely drew me out of being a PC gamer. However, the Steam Deck came out and I got it for my anniversary present last year and right back to the PC games, but mostly only if they work on the Steam Deck. Right now my big time sink game is Tears of the Kingdom so obviously playing it on my Switch however, the next game in the queue is Dark Souls, so we'll see how that works on the Steam Deck not to worried though. My husband is a solid PC gamer has a desktop sits at a gigantic desk in a shitty chair, I however, can't handle sitting at a desk for more than like an hour, and then I end up hating every minute. so I have always used laptops and my current one hasn't been touched (outside of playing V Rising with him for 2 months and only because I couldn't get it to work on the Steam Deck) in almost a year.

It immediately made all the consoles I own irrelevant. The ease of access is just king as a dad. I think there will still be a reason to own consoles for myself. For the past two-three months, I've been thinking about switching over to PC gaming and at the beginning of July, I bought my first every Gaming Laptop. The laptop that I bought was just over $1500, but when you add up the price of an Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5, plus accessories, I've spent around $1500, and that doesn't include the $600+ for the PSVR 2 headset. Depending on your comfortability setting such a system up, and the network in your house, running a pc headless with moonlight/sunshine has been the saving grace for me as a new dad. I have my pc in a corner of the house with my router sitting on top of it, nothing else is plugged into it except power and ethernet. I run sunshine on the pc and if I want to play a high graphics game I connect to it from my steamdeck and play it that way. Else I play lighter games and games on the go on the steamdeck itself. I even tested games like CoD, Battlebit, halo, etc that require low latency and high fidelity and it is basically indistinguishable from playing the games locally once you have it set correctly. My study turned into my first sons bedroom. So like you mentioned I didn't have space to dedicate to a big gaming setup. I've still got my gaming monitor/kbm if I want to use that. But 99.9% handheld now.

Perhaps Steam OS, with its quasi-console-like experience, could improve your impressions of these devices. In the future, Valve wants Steam OS to be able to run anywhere. I the Series X, the PS5, a PC and the Steamdeck. The Steamdeck is without a doubt the best companion hardware that exists out there. The fact that it can play both Sony and Microsoft exclusives, all of my Steam library + other launchers with tweaks (Blizzard, Epic, EA, Ubi), emulate pretty much anything (tho PS3 and Xbox 360 is much more demanding), allow me to stream my games from my PS5 and Series X with tweaks AND that it doubles as a desktop while docked and I can actually get work done, is nothing short of extraordinary. I also love the fact that it encouraged me to pickup games I wouldnt necessarily played like plateformers and stuff, and that I can just play something for 20 min, put it on sleep, come back a week later and pick my game back up from where I left it.

Agreed. I have a ps5 collecting dust, and my wife plays Zelda on Switch, but basically only use Steam anymore. I got a PC, a SteamDeck and an Ally and can play most of my library on all of them. The saves automatically transfer. Makes it too easy

I'm a work from home dog dad with a wife who works in the hospital in med school. I used to be function off of Nintendo and Sony as my main consoles until around the PS4 and Switch generation I realized the consoles themselves were aging faster than the games trying to come out. I am a bit of a framerate snob and if the game has less than 45fps I want nothing to do with it. Built a PC in 2019 before the prices ballooned and have been using Steam as my main gaming library. Over time I learned that while I enjoy the ridiculous processing power of my PC that I've upgraded it is unfortunately tied to one spot in the apartment and it involves me to disassociate from my wife when she is at home (she likes to be around me to spectate or listen to the games I play in the background while she studies) The steam deck has since triggered a change I didn't realize I always needed. I had always been a fan of portables between Nintendo consoles, the PSP, and PS Vita - but those devices were always noticeably behind in power and ability compared to their modern console brothers. The idea of a portable PC didn't make sense to me because it always sound like I would need to invest into a laptop if I want to play my games somewhere else by which I was okay telling myself I can wait until I am home to play games. Christmas of 2022 hits and my wife got me the steam deck, she knew steam was my main library and that I used to use my switch as my go to handheld when we hang in the living room or visit in laws back home. I was skeptical at first but was surprised to see how quickly my library of indie games, retro games, emulated games, and Double A titles had me playing my steam deck more than my PC. Nowadays I am on my PC if my wife isn't home and have to remind myself to use it every now and then so I don't let it gather too much dust. The OLED model after having had the first model was the cherry on top. They improved so much in so many marginal ways it just feels nice to be a consumer and not feel shafted in some way for once in over like 7 years with this age of modern gaming.

To me the biggest positive for the Steam Deck has been the portability. Even sacrificing some of the visuals for me has been an easy choice because I don’t want to sit at a location any longer than I need to and the steam deck gives me that freedom!

Man, I can't recommend you the gaming PC + Steam Deck combo enough. I am currently playing Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, during the day I use my Deck and in the night I continue where I left of in the PC. You can also stream your PC games to the Deck, and I do that while docked on my TV, which for more graphics required games, it's perfect. I know PC gaming sounds expensive, but with the sales/deals and no need to pay for a subscription to play online, it feels better. I made the jump from Xbox One/PS4 to PC, and man it's been amazing. Now with the Deck, it's perfect. Steam and GOG are also very consumer friendly, way more than Xbox, PS or Nintendo in my opinion.

as someone a bit younger who grew up with the DS and loved how social that whole experience was (Picto Chat and Mario Kart or Pokemon went wild in the school bus or on car rides), I was really hoping the Switch to be that again with it's detachable controllers, but it just wasn't. I never really ended up sharing the small controllers, and with how expensive the games are I usually only had the biggest releases, not great for just showing to someone for a short time. I gradually moved to PC over the years as I needed a machine to edit videos for school, and after a few upgrades since 2016, and a shit ton of game bundles, steam sales and incredible game deals, getting my Steam Deck LCD in 2023 just made sense. It works with pretty much any controller under the sun, and is small enough to bring around. Not only do I have the Deck available if the Metro is down for a while, for example, but I also can also bring it around when seeing friends to be able to show them my favorite games and share the experience. The Steam Deck feels very social in that way where I can play any of my favorite games and not have to stay confined to my desk, as you said, and whenever the next Deck comes out, all the games I own will already be compatible. It just removes a significant part of the hassle, which might not always be better, I'll definitely still use my desktop computer, but in a hobby all about options and choice like PC gaming usually is, now being able to choose to play at the park or in bed if I want to feels like a breath of fresh air.

I went with the GPD Win Max 2 with the GPD G1 dock/EGPU. On the go its powerful enough, and has the build in keyboard making it usable with windows. If I plug it in the G1 one, because of the external video card in there, it functions fine as a medium powered gaming pc, playing 1440p games at 60 fps at least. I also have a big pc with a 12900k I9 processor and a 3080 geforce video card, but I find I only use that for really heavy games with raytracing etc.

I have a good gaming rig (i7, rtx3080, 64gb ram, 4tb ssd) and a Steam Deck OLED. Life is good! :) Sharing savegames between PC (Steam) and Steam Deck is a godsent! Also PC Supports Ultrawide monitors and once you try ultrawide gaming you don't want to go back to just 16:9. Playing Red Dead Redemption 2, Witcher3 etc. on a 21:9 display is AWESOME! Used to be a console gamer but I'm not going back.

I’ve had my steam deck oled for less than a week and I’ve been gaming more than i have before in recent months it’s been great and it’s like my Xbox was portable quite powerful for what it is and I’ve been very satisfied with the purchase and I get more games than what I could get on my switch and I’ve already picked up a free to keep game from a promotion on steam. But overall as a dad this device has been my best purchase and I only have my wife to thank bc she is the one who pointed it out to me and a she doesn’t really even play games she just saw the one her uncle had and said that I need to get one and so i did

I love my OG 64GB steam deck and love to hear people's views on the device. I know it's not the most powerful but there are so many benefits of steam OS vs Windows. I am currently playing through FF7 Remake on deck and it plays great. Can't wait for a steam deck 2. I just want to run games at 60fps with higher quality shaders, being able to play 1080p native docked at 60fps would be great too

PC gaming has always been the better experience. It's much easier these days than in the 90's when a lot of tweaking was often necessary. Luckily, since 2003/4 I've been buying games off Steam so my catalog is pretty extensive. Not huge but I also console game so.... But with the remote play on Xbox and PlayStation now, I don't even need to be near them. I love the flexibility it brings.

In 2008, I bought games on Steam, Wii, PS3, PSP, and XBox 360. Today, I can go into a Best Buy, and buy a budget laptop and any controller I want, a PS5, an XBox Series X, and a Switch. Of the games I bought back in 2008, I can't play any of them on any console other than a tiny, tiny fraction that I get to buy again or rent/stream (yay!) or hope made it onto XBox's backward compatibility list before that program was ended. I can play every Steam game I bought back then on the budget laptop, and I can do it better than I could on the $3000 gaming rig I bought them on. Also, I don't have space for physical media, and I definitely don't have space for every console with games I really want to play. PC has the well-known issues, for sure. But the Steam Deck coming out at a time when every major console manufacturer is closing the doors on digital shops that people paid good money for games on, and games themselves getting more expensive, it makes spending money on the current consoles that much more painful. Buying them on Steam feels more like an investment because I have such high confidence that I'm going to be able to play those games from 2008 in 2028 on whatever's in stores that year. The consoles have given us backward compatibility from time to time, but it's never lasted more than 2 generations. And FFS why do they make it so damn painful to use multiple devices??? Not a problem on Steam.

I have a switch. I got the lite first as I thought I never get time to play on tv with kids etc, then got the switch v2 . It did me well for around 3.5 years until I ran out of games I wanted to play. Last December I decided to get a steam deck oled as the trailer looked good and my issue with getting a steam deck was always the battery . But with the improvements , I got one . Love it . Playing deus ex human revolution, Detroit , enslaved , halo master chief collection , plague tale , chorus - all the sort of games I was playing pre kids and marriage (2013) . It’s been amazing !! Still play my switch as now my eldest (6) is interested . So we played Mario odyssey and Kirby. So… now steam deck oled is my main way to play my dad games , and switch to play with my son

The great thing is you can buy all these parts individually when you have the money. It took me almost a year to get all of the parts but I built it. I can relate. I sold my PS5 and Series X. I wanted freedom. I built a PC. Now the only thing I'm waiting on now is re-vamped version of Windows for handheld PCs. I want full compatibility between my PC and a handheld PC. Steam Deck OLED is the best of the lot right now imo. However, if Microsoft builds a more friendly version of Windows for handheld coupled with Asus putting out the next iteration of the Ally. I think we have strong case there.

What's super cool about Steam Deck and other handhelds like it: It lowers the floor of cost of the price of entering PC gaming. On top of that, they really lower the expectations of what we find acceptable for "Graphics" and performance in pc games. No more rushing out to get a RTX 4090 because comfortability overrules being chained to the desktop.
