Dear Julie, you did a bang up job on Albanian. I have only heard it spoken a few times here in Prague by tourists. It has a unique sound and I heard both versions of "th". I suppose that the imposed isolation explains why the complexity of the grammar remains. It was a revelation to me that nearly 50% of the vocabulary arises from Latin. That was a new piece of information. I must say that the language has a nice sound to it. Many thanks.

2:39 The roots of the word "Albania" are traced back to the ancient Greco-Roman historian Ptolemy 150 bc. He writes of an Ilyrian tribe named "Albanoi" and a city named "Albanopolis" located in present day central Albania. The name "Shqiperi" was made popular by the Albanian national hero Gjergj Kastrioti (Scanderbeg). The world "Shqiperi" comes from the word "Shqipe", or "Shqiponje" which in English means "Eagle". You are correct, however it is not completely known where the Albanians came from, and it is a heavy debate topic, especially among Linguists. The dominating hypothesis is that Albanians originated as Paleo-Balkanic peoples, however whether or not this includes that Albanians are direct descendents of the Illyrians is still unknown. Albania is a very beautiful place, with very kind people, and underrated history. Love from Bulgaria! 🇦🇱❤🇧🇬

@cerebrummaximus3762 - The only people who deny that Albanians are the descendants of Ylirians are the Serbs. They do this because from the beginning of the 7th century, they have invaded Albanian lands. Denying Albanian history is part of their hostile agenda towards Albanians.

@cerebrummaximus3762 - Slavic people like the Serbs migrated in the Balkans in the seventh century. However, there is no known time or date of the arrivals of the Albanians in the Balkans. This because Albanians are native to the Balkans. Having been there before humans were able to record history.

The Albanian language is older than Latin. Those words that you compared if you notice are shorter in Albanian which indicates an older origin then the Latin ones. Its the other way around. The Latin language has taken words from the ancient Albanian language. If someone takes the time to really study the Gheg dialect of the Albanian language, they will understand the origin of the words. If you want to learn a little bit about this topic, I suggest you read the books of Mathieu Aref.

Well yeah but Albania (the name of our country) is actually derived from the Illyrian Tribe named "Albani" in Albanian: "Albanët". Today we in Albania don't even call our country Albania but "Shqipëria". Before the name Shqipëria (was first used in the 17th century), the nation used to be called "Arbëria (Tosk Dialect)/ Arbënia (Gheg Dialect). Therefore the first Albanian Principality in the 11th Century known as Principality of Arbanon/ in Albanian: Principata e Arbërit. This video also has a lot of misleading info. Super nice description. I in particular enjoyed and laughed on how you explained the admirative , lol, ... which is actually true - and it is what makes albanian so unique and quite universal. I had worked and developed the first ever electronic spellchecker for Albanian back in 1997, ant it was then that I understood how complex my native tounge is. One single verb depending on its tense and combined with the mood can be written in up to 36 different forms, ... and then the irregular verbs, (ah, ... :) ) ... The Albanian use of admirative forms is unique in the Balkan context. It is not translatable in other languages. In English, the expression of surprise can be rendered by 'oh, look!' or 'lookee there!'; the expression of doubt can be rendered by 'indeed!'; the expression of neutral reportedness can be rendered by 'apparently' ... While being greatful to your video, I am not aware that Shqip means the language of the people, it rather means, Shqiperia - land of eagle(s), from Shqipe - Shqiponja - and by deduction, shqip - the language of these people. There is also a legend about how these peopl of the eagle came to be ... A mistery (or not) is why the others call us Albanians - whereby Alba refers to white, which could mean the white people. But we never called ourselves like that.

Although it was exchanged going on, I think it was mostly the other way around. Search for Illyrian emperors and you will see. Almost half of em are from the Illyrian origin. They continued this tradition with Byzantium too. Until a millennia old conspiracy against the Albanians was forged by the 7 BC hords. Still like we say, not Avash avash but Ngadale Ngadale.

How is it that the Latin word "amicus" a word of 6 letters became an Albanian word "mik" and not vice versa. Are short roots building words or is it the opposite? Remember, our ancestors inhabited Italian peninsula long before the Romans conquered our lands! Rest assure our language is one of the oldest if not the oldest known to day. You must do a bit of more research about our language. There are some German, Austrian and French linguists that have written about our language that you may find them helpful.

Short words of basic terms are combined to form bigger words, like in air+plane , BUT many times long words of simple meanings (like body parts, or concepts of family relative ) are taken by another nation and they are simplified. For example the Greek word κοιμητήριον became cemetery, or the Greek word επι+σκοπος (επίσκοπος) became in German bischof and in English even simpler : bishop . Many Greek words have passed to other European languages (sometimes through Latin) shortened and condensed. αστήρ -> star , the 1st letter was dropped, but ὁρίζων -> horizon (nothing was dropped) , σκηνή -> scene (nothing was lost) When an uncivilized nation takes complex words from a more advanced nation, then the uncivilized nation usually shortens a little the words. Because the uncivilized nation does not understand the word , it has not any contact with the etymology (ετυμολογία, another Greek/Hellenic word) of the original word, so it does not care to preserve the original form of the word intact.

The optative mood is the best, you can curse or bless someone with a small switch. Your nominative example "Ti flet shqip" / "You speak Albanian" becomes "Ti flitsh shqip" in optative, which roughly translates to "(may you be able to) speak Albanian" I don't know if this is a blessing or a curse TBH given the complexity of the language 😉 The optative is very often used (in various Albanian speaking regions) as an alternative way to say "Thank You" by saying "Rofsh!" which is "Live!" In optative, which again roughly translates to "may you be awarded with long life". The corresponding Albanian "Hello" is indeed in optative "Tungjatjeta" from "Tu ngjat jeta" meaning almost exactly the same: may you be awarded with long(er) life. Which makes the Albanians the original Vulcans Live long and prosper! 🖖
