Durán vs Chávez at 135 is the ultimate fantasy fight. People (especially younger people) tend to dismiss Chavez because they only saw him when he was already shot -vs DLH, Whitaker, Randall and Tszyu. But he was a beast south of welterweight. He ENDED careers. Ask Rosario and Taylor. Durán is probably the only lightweight in history against whom I'd place Chavez as an underdog.

I've never seen a fighter who could defend on the inside as well as Julio Cesar Chavez. Nobody is even close. The concentration that he had in those days was almost surreal. His committment to break down his opponent was inhumane. He was always "in the zone" back then. You couldnt break him. People, when you watch him in this fight, you're seeing one of the very greatest at the top of his game, and for the last time. As great as he was after this, he'd never be this great again. Enjoy it.

As Angelo Dundee said before Chavez's fight with Taylor, he said "Julio Cesar Chavez is the toughest fighter he has ever seen bar none." Larry Merchant then said you how tough Chavez is that after the first 9 round how Chavez came back. Chavez will always be my favorite fighter, Mike Tyson got me watching boxing. Chavez is the reason I fell in love with the sport. Chavez in his prime embodied everything you would want in a fighter.

Chavez was a three division Champ and held 5 separate world titles during the alphabet soup days. To win his three world titles he had to just train less and less with each fight and it appeared after he hit 140lbs he did. Henry Armstrong simultaneously held 126, 135, 147 and should have held 160 at the same time, but was robbed in a draw against Cefrino Gracia. Hank was a little guy. That is impressive. Even with Tommy Hearns moving from 154 to 175 was and back to 160 was amazing.

Saludos!!!

Robinson is the greatest, but as far as the ratings of the U.S based media outlet's ESPN,Bert Sugar, and Ring magazine's placement of the all-time greats, I couldn't care less. I don't need their opinion or approval when I analyze and evaluate greatness or lack thereof. I know greatness when I see it as I have many years experience in the world of Boxing. Chavez,without question,deserves to be mentioned amongst the very best the sport has produced.

Yes, Armstrong beat great fighters. To wit, he beat Barney Ross to win the welterweight title--Ross himself was a three-division titlist and all-time great. Hank then went down in weight and beat Lou Ambers, a terrific fighter, to win the lightweight title. Armstrong was an amazing fighter, probably the second greatest fighter ever (behind SRR). His opponents read like a who's who of fighters of the era. He was a genuine full-on amazing fighter.

@canibusnj Floyd Mayweather is primarily an outside fighter/attacker whose primary objective is to defend the frontier. JC was primarily an inside fighter whose primary objective was to penetrate the frontier of his enemy and fight in the trenches, and break their will to resist.Floyd's inside defense consist's of fighting from the philly shell and firing a decoy right to evade and retreat, more than anything else,to get back on the outside where he's most effective.

I see what you're saying, but i find it impossible to overestimate JCC... He just had that animalistic, jungle, caged-dog intensity like Duran or Dempsey. Take it back to the original 8 and Chavez's resume is that he won a title at 135lbs. ODH 135, 147 and 160, yeah Felix Strum was the middleweight champion of the world when Oscar beat him. Tommy Hearn's is more impressive because he did win at 147, 175, then 160. If you include supers and jr. than 147, 154, 160 and 168 and 175 and the other bs sanctioning bodies then six division. Henry Armstrong did something amazing, 126, 135 and 147 at the same time. Unmatched in history.

@TheChoice264 I agree, he was some kind of freak, I am an amateur and when I fight I try to emulate Chavez, to fight like him, you know, to go forward and close the distance and all, but it is just too damn hard, it is exhausting, you get hit a lot, and u need to have a very heavy hand, this man just made it look so easy, like Ignacio Beristain said "nature exceeded itself with Chavez"
@TheChoice26412 жыл бұрын
I disagree. For a boxing insider this was a thrilling exhibition of boxing skill and will displayed by both fighters. Rosario, though the loser, showed many honorable traits of the warrior and was constantly trying and never gave up. Chavez had all the tangibles and all the intangibles and would be a match for any fighter in the history of the sport,especially at Lightweight. Being a Duran groupie, why do you follow Chavez around on youtube? Another Chavez Hater anyone?
@1Grandsun12 жыл бұрын
Julio El César Chavez does stand amongst: Armstrong, Louis, Robinson, and Ali. However, I don't necessarily agree he would've beat any fighter at 140, here's why. When Julio(31) fought Sweet P.(29), Pete displayed excellenct Ring generalship skills by defusing and frustrating a still efficient El César. Granite, I do consider that Julio had 86 prior fights and boxer-punchers are usually considered past prime by ages 27-30. However I don't see Julio(27) giving Pernell(25) too many more problems.

@canibusnj On the other hand,JC set up camp in the trenches,lived in the trenches, and blended his attacks and defense into one cognizant unit,which at times was breath taking in scope and utterly genius. Even in defense, he attacked. This is why he was greater than Floyd or anyone else on the inside. He didnt do it out of a shell, but facing you,utiilzing every srtoke of the artistic brush of defensive:Parry,Bob&Weave,Slippn,Rolling,Feint,Counter,In-Direct,Retreat....all right in front of enemy

Sorry but if you go by that logic Manny Pacquiao is an 8 division champ. There used to only be 8 divisons in boxing. So if take 40 years off the calender and called Manny an 8 division champ that meant he held a title at every weight possible in the sport. If fact wasn't the Supper Middle Weight title created specifically for SRL? No that's right the WBO had it's version of the title out as well and Hearns won that title 1st at SMW, not SRL. But history will show SRL as being the 1st 5 dc.

no disrespect intended, this was an entertaining fight; not the most exciting though, but it did possess a solid workmanlike pace with lots of infighting(& not much else) which was actually the forte of both these scrappers. neither of these 2 would of been any kind of match for Roberto Duran!

I dont give a fuck what anybody says Chavez could of beat anyone at 135/140/146 on this night. He was amazing. Crazy accuracy, power , and ability to take a punch. This fight was his absolute prime no doubt about it. I would give anything to see a 25 yr old de la hoya against this JCC. Chavez even said he had never even had a drop of alcohol before this fight. Just trained like a mad man in the mountains. After the fight though he had a celebratory drink and it slowly went downhill from there.
@1Grandsun12 жыл бұрын
That sounds good but that doesn't make it a fact. Sweet P, was a light wieght through most of those years including 1987, that would've been unfair to put P in with Chavez while Chavez was use to fight at Jr. Welter. All in all we don't know, but what we do know is that Pernell was robbed.
@Armando31613 жыл бұрын
@bmillerdrums He was amazing. I would only take a handful of lightweights who could stand in there with him.
@sinusbradycardia12 жыл бұрын
Because Whitaker proved his toughness when he had too. It almost appeared that Chavez and Whitaker were avoiding each other. Chavez started out at a lower weight than Whitaker and was in his division for less than 2 years. These two should have collided in 1988 and maybe they would have, had Jose Luiz Ramirez not won the second biggest robbery in boxing history. The biggest robbery goes to RJJ losing in the 1988 Olympics. Anyway JCC Sr. Favorite Fighter of all time. Tommy Hearns is 2nd.

@sly717 Yeah, Benton and Duva felt the same way as you, and I agree with you,Benton, and Duva. In fact, everybody back in those days, felt strongly that JC would not only beat Pea, but ruin his promising career. Chavez was simply too much too soon for Pea. Team Pea ducked JC at Lightweight and when JC moved to Jr.Welt, Pea leap-frogged Jr.Welt and went str8 to Welter, thus avoiding a showdown with JC yet again. They(Team Pea) sat out the dance for 6 yrs.

Point being is there are too many titles and too many weight divisions. What that does to people who don't know the history of the sport is dilute what fighters, I do means, Henry Armstrong and Sugar Ray Robinson did. Even as great as Sugar Ray Robinson was, he just didn't have it in him that night to beat an average fighter. I fighter should not have to move up in weight to prove his greatness. Marvolous Marvin Hagler spent his entire career 160. Never complained about making weight.

Hammerin' Hank was a great, great fighter, I agree. But no one, and I mean NO ONE would've ever destroyed Chavez at his peak. He was simply too tough and skilled. Combine that with an awesome will to win and a fight against Armstrong would've seen both warriors in it for the long haul. Same with Duran. Too tough, skilled and willful. No one ever destroys those types of fighters at their peak.

At 130 Chavez was a destroyer, I believe against good opposition Chavez always fought better. I believe Chavez peeked at 135lbs and it is documented by Georgie Benton that at 135lbs, they didn't want Sweet Pea in the ring with. Benton is quoted as saying he wanted Chavez to age a little and slow down a little before Whitaker fought. They saw this man destroy Meldrick Taylor and they were a little concerned about Whitaker toughness at that point. Which they should not have been.

As far as your rambling about what Armstrong would do to Chavez, it's quite comical. Armstrong was one of the greats,no doubt, but you really don't know if he would've beaten Chavez at Lightweight. Armstrong couldn't even beat mexican Baby Arizmendi,who whipped Armstrong with one hand. Arizmendi fought with a broken left wrist from the second round on and won every round,giving Armstrong a boxing lesson. Armstrong faired even worse in the rematch. One commentator acknowledges that the mouthguard of Rosario is belted out at closing of 7th round and then another one wonders where the blood is coming from? My question is why didn't Steele stop the fight to allow mouthpiece to be refitted. Why didn't Rosario tell anyone if his corner didn't notice or if the ref didn't notice. He left himself absolutely open to getting knocked out or as happened getting bloodied in the mouth. All round bad supervision of boxing match. Chavez was going to win anyway but this type of oversight should never have happened. I always have my teeth down on my mouthguard when I take a punch and I would hate to know what would happen if I took punches to the mouth without a mouthguard=well, exactly what happened to Rosario-there was no coming back from this punishment in any case!
@juliohernandez511010 жыл бұрын
Chavez was simply the much better fighter, period. Rosario was a good champion but this is one of those classical instances in which fighter A is so much better than fighter B, that they could tangle up 10 times and the result would be the same every time.

@sly717 I agree. Oh there's no doubt about it. If Chavez was an american, even with his mexican blood, he'd been the greatest thing ever in their eyes. Could you imagine if DeLaHoya would've been as great as Chavez? The U.S would rank DeLaHoya ahead of Robinson. Thats just being real. The Yankees hated JC because he said,"Fuck you. @Kedbuka You're crazy and dead wrong to suggest for one second that JCC was on Homicide Hank's level. I never saw Chavez holding three world titles in three separate weight classes simultaneously. I know Armstrong did though and judges had to rob him to keep him from making it a fourth with the middleweight crown. Chavez struggled badly at welter, a title that Armstrong. No, Armstrong would be too big and too tough for Chavez. He was great not indestructible.

Don't ever make the mistake of comparing Chavez to Homicide Hank Armstrong. Armstrong would have destroyed Chavez and it wouldn't have been close either. Not only is Armstrong ranked either second or third on every best fighter and best pound for pound ever list, he's the only world champion to simultaneously hold THREE world titles in three separate weight classes. At the same time. And it would have been four if the judges didn't rob him and stick him with a draw.

***** Chávez is a six-time world champion in three weight divisions,[4] and for several years he was considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.[5] In a career that spanned over 25 years, Chávez won the WBC Super Featherweightin 1984, WBA Lightweight in 1987, WBC Lightweight in 1988, WBC Light Welterweight in 1989, IBF Light Welterweight in 1990, and WBC Light Welterweight in 1994. He holds records for most successful defenses of world titles (27), most title fight victories (31), most title fights (37), and he is after Joe Louis (with 23) for most title defenses won by knockout (21). Chávez also has the longest undefeated streak in boxing history, 13 years. His record was 89-0-1 going into his first official loss to Frankie Randall and had an 87 fight win streak until his draw with Pernell Whitaker. Chávez also set the record for the largest attendance for a boxing match, with 132,274 people at the Estadio Aztecaagainst Greg Haugen in 1993.

If Armstrong lost to Baby Arizmendi and Davey Abad, isn't it only logical to realize that Chavez couldve beaten Armstrong as well, and foolish of you to assume that the great Chavez would lose without question? Fritzie Zivic was an all-time great,but also a very crude fighter, and he gave Armstrong a terrible whipping. Chavez was much more refined and better defensively than Zivic and hit with more power. This is why we can't ever just assume that one ATG woulod beat another.We simply don't know

@sly717 The cold hard facts of the matter is that,as a Lightweight, JC was at his peak, and everybody in boxing knew that he could not be beaten. He was just too tough,too skilled, had too much chin, too much heart, to much ambition, too much dedication and had too many intangibles to defeat.He would war every fight and not even have a scratch on him. No cuts, no swelling, not even a nose bleed.The only way you could beat this fighter was to sit it out and wait. Wait for him to burn out and age.

Why people can't seem to understand what you are saying? I always hear where Chavez was a "protected" fighter and his record was "padded" with 106 wins. As if he never fought and beat decent fighter. I hear so much Chavez's record was filled with "bums". One person canijusa taints every Chavez fight with his comments. I have never seen such hatred for a single fighter. That hatred is spawed by one thing and one thing only - people love success but hate successful people. Pure bitterness.
