However, he was appointed as "dictator perpetuo" (dictator in perpetuity) by the Roman Senate in 44 BC. This title essentially made him the ruler of Rome for life, even though the term "dictator for life" was not used explicitly. Caesar's actions leading up to this point, such as consolidating power and making changes to the Roman political system, set the stage for his appointment to this position.
