One of the few African leaders who actually led wirh integrity. Did not die a billionaire like everyone else on the continent. He stayed true.

You are right. That is because he was an idiosyncratic philosopher. He rejected racial suprimacy. He accepted democracy not in the way western countries understood it (which is tyranny), but modified Aristotle's view by rejecting slavery.

Those countries didn't exist as countries. They were tiny divided and ever quarrelling tribe-nations that were easy targets for British conquest. Secondly Britain was at the zenith if its power. It was gradually growing into an empire having benefitted immensely from slavery and industrial revolution.
