Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who was the first to circumnavigate the world in 1519-1522. He was born in 1480 in northern Portugal and became a skilled sailor. Magellan was determined to find a western route to the Spice Islands and organized an expedition of five ships and 270 men.
