Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who was the first to circumnavigate the world in 1519-1522. He was born in 1480 in northern Portugal and became a skilled sailor. Magellan was determined to find a western route to the Spice Islands and organized an expedition of five ships and 270 men. His voyage opened the way for further exploration and trade between Europe and Asia. Magellan’s accomplishments remain a significant milestone in maritime history.

A replica of Ferdinand Magellan’s four-masted tall ship Nao Trinidad will dock at the Hudson River Maritime Museum from Sept. 19 to Oct. 8 as part of its American voyage, the museum announced this week. According to a news release, the Spanish-built ship is a replica of the 16th-Century tall ship Magellan captained during the first circumnavigation of the world. The vessel will be open for public tours during its time docked in Kingston.
