Was 13 degrees yesterday, did a good winter clear out of one bed, then covered with weedmat, and found concrete rounds to hold it down(my first year using weed mat). Will be planted with potatoes in September, a winter snow/rain snap is coming through for the next two days then 7 days of frosty weather. Soil was not too wet, thirty second year of no dig!! Only two more beds to weed and cover, finished filling the on site netting compost heap for another bed.

Mr and Mrs W news from HERMS’S garden. Just pulled up my garlic. My lord what a crop and size I’m as happy as a bee in pollen. Strawberries also a fantastic crop. Intermediate Tomatoes are looking so so but my tumbling toms are looking great in their baskets and pots. Runner beans growing nicely along with climbing nasturtiums and sweet peas. Weather is playing up down here can’t make its mind up. Never mind you two brighten up everyone’s day. Diolch

That's a good tip cutting the tops off the climbing beans. I never bothered doing that but will give it a try this year. I've been picking very long beans from them already. The variety is called Fortex Filet Pole Beans. Still waiting for broccoli side shoots and first tomatoes. The small grape tomatoes are starting to change so maybe by the end of the week I'll be able to pick a few.

July is a month of keeping on top of things for me, Sungold is a great variety, our first ripe tomato however was a tumbling Tom. Still, lots on the way. I'm nearly done with Broad Beans and have leeks good and ready to take over. All the best.

Longing for some rain here in Wiltshire. Water butts are empty so hard work with the watering can. We are taking Jerry cans over tp the allotment. Prioritising water for newly planted crops and lettuce, celeriac, celery, and fennel. I am trying to find space in thea beds for my leeks, Must look and see if I can squeeze them in here and there. I have space in the kitchen garden but I had allium leaf miner last year, so not growing in my kitchen garden this year. I froze all my calabrese side shoots over the weekend. I need to take the nets off my brassicas to see what they are doing. Maybe my caulis are getting heads. I'm growing purple cauli this year. Love all purple veg! Beautiful tomatoes you have. Lovely 🙂Some of my lettuces are bolting now. IWe just can't eat all of them. Have given away some to the foodbank and to neighbours. I have comfrey feed brewing on the allotment. Awful smell but the plants love it. I crop mine from the allotment- it grows every where.Also make nettle tea for the brassicas. We have over 20 bags of mature home made compost stored on the allotment. It will be so useful later in the year. My garlic is now completely dried ready for storage. I just bought some net bags to store them. I m still using last year's shallots in my cooking! I've had a poor year for rhubarb, sadly. The only one that is cropping is 'Livingstone'. I have so much soft fruit to harvest- just haven't had the time. red, black and white currant, loganberries, strawberries and raspberries. Happy harvesting and gardening 🙂

Looking at your rhubarb reminded me I’ve got loads in the freezer. I shall be making my favourite rhubarb and strawberry jam from a recipe I picked up on line as soon as I finish the last of my current stock of rhubarb and ginger jam. Just love rhubarb. Best wishes, Pete

My main issue atm is black fly/aphids. They bloody everywhere and I’ve tried everything without issuing chemicals…. I don’t wanna use chemical. Same with feed I use seaweed feed and worm castings. But stuff is looking said. Think it’s just the weather screwing with it all. We have had huge harvests so far from the raspberries, can’t believe it tbh as a couple of the ones in containers died back, but are still alive- not fruiting this year but sure they will be ok for next. Just trying to keep things watered is hard work I’m finding.

Great show as usual…thanks 😊 Ref Comfrey. I believe that the variety of Comfrey known as Bocking 14 is sterile and will not seed around your garden and be invasive. If starting, it is recommended to get that version …available online as root cuttings in the dormant season

All looking good as usual Mr n Mrs W….my potatoes I think have blight so I’ll be looking to cut those down. Elephant garlic will be up tomorrow too. This is my first year growing shallots so when would you harvest those? Had some luck recently too, was gifted some comfrey by a plot neighbour & it’s now big enough to cut (will watch your video) but also someone was selling a 200L hotbin, ridiculously cheap couldn’t resist it 🎉

Thanks Vanessa! As with onions when two thirds of the crop are falling over, leaves starting to yellow and bulbs changing colour then they are ready to harvest. Now you have your own comfrey no more spending money on liquid feeds and a hot bin in the same week on the cheap what a week - well done you!

Your garden looks amazing, I've got a few onions to save, but most went to seed I did over winter onions. My summer onions haven't come to much. Is there a reason why my main crop potatoes look like there dieing off?

Thanks Mark! Do you have any blight on your potatoes. They could simply be dying off and ready for there final harvest - have you pulled one to see what you have? Always worth pulling one plant to see what you have, Our Maris Piper were always ready in July from a March planting!

Hi Guys My Runner beans are well away and making loads of flowers but not many beans, the flowers just fall off. Any tips as to why ?
@nodignorfolkgardener4575
@nodignorfolkgardener4575 22 күн бұрын
Hi Neil, it sounds like your runner beans might not be getting properly pollinated! Try attracting more bees and other pollinators to your garden to help with the process. The other thing you could try is to spray them with the hose to help them set. Changes in temps can cause a lack of flower set!
