Thanks for buying waxworms. With plastics becoming so good I love to see you younger guys using them. 3rd generation waxworm farmer from northern Wisconsin.

Awesome! Glad to help any way I can. I never go perch fishing without bringing some meat, and more often than not, it’s a big vat of waxies.

Everyone around me always look at waxies like a rookie thing to use because of plastics but they just don’t bite plastics like they do waxies. I have tried lots of different plastics for walleye and perch and live bait always trumps it. Although at my local bait shop in northern Michigan it’s 7$ for a dozen walleye minnows 15$ a dozen for sucker minnows and 3$ a dozen for perch minnows. And 4$ for a small can of wax worms.

Right on! Yeah, I love flutter spoons for perch. Seems like a lot of folks recommend rattle spoons, but I've always been a fan of the flutters.

Last week, I was in an ice house about 3/4 mile offshore from Randy’s Rentals in about 18-20 feet of water. It was incredibly slow. I tried everything. Shiners, suckers, fatheads, spikes, every type of jig I had. Early morning and afternoon/evening. There were just very few fish in the area. My Vex was very quiet. It was my first time at Mille Lacs. I don’t live in the ice belt, so I rented an ice house because I don’t have a lot of the equipment you would need to hole hop. Next time, I will probably go to Leech or Winnie.

I’m sorry to hear that. Midwinter can be tough on a lot of lakes, especially if you’re fishing for walleye. I hope you do better next time out.

@ thanks, brother. Despite the slow bite, I was really happy being out on the lake in winter. We don’t get a lot of hard water in Texas, where I’m from. Actually, we don’t get any at all. The sunrise and sunset over the lake were pretty magical. Walking on the ice and listening to it crunch under foot and groan in the distance were soothing. I also learned a lot about technique just from using the Vex (thanks Trail Side!). So, it was definitely fun, and I really liked being up there!

Hey Nick, I’m bringing my wife up to the lake this weekend. I have only ever opened water fished Mille Lacs. Since I have never ice fish on the lake, where do I drive in at on the north side to try fishing the flats and also where is the best place to get bait? Thank you.

Forgot to ask another question Nick about cameras and your opinion do you think the camera spooks walleyes or do you think it doesn’t matter? I just got the large aqua view and I’m eager to try it out on the lake this weekend.

Do you have a recommended resort to stay at for someone coming from SE Wisconsin? I normally have went to Lake Winnie but the perch bite has been slower the past 2 years and willing to try a new lake?

Honestly, I prefer the perch videos the most. I live in Iowa it's easier for me to fish a 3lbs brown trout that it is to find perch. I live in an area where I can drive 20 minutes and catch everything from bluegill to musky , but the only place is the Mississippi River, but only for about 2 weeks in early December.

When you say the jumbo perch are back…. Aren’t the jumbo perch always in the same area?
@NickLindner
@NickLindner 18 сағат бұрын
Perch populations are super cyclical on some lakes, like Mille Lacs. There are always a few big ones swimming around at any given time, but some years, you'll see big year classes that survive a few years of predation. Perch grow fast on Mille Lacs, but there's also a lot of predators that can knock down year classes quickly.
