My fav game right now and one of my top games ever. I don't understand why people call it too complex. I was never good at complex 4X games (for example I suck at EU4), but I love Old World.

I just got the game a couple days ago. At first I was a bit overwhelmed at all the stuff there is to manage such as resources and everything. After a couple games I started picking up on how all the different resources work, and what they do. Now it has become my favorite game. I just got my buddy that I have weekend civ games with to buy it. It's not a game you're going to understand immediately and that might throw people off. The game is very in-depth to me, but I enjoy it.

EU4 isn't 4X. It's grand strategy and that genre is generally more complex than 4X. Old World does have more mechanical complexity than the current 4X representative Civ6 and it's honestly what makes this game refreshing and interesting.
@nikolatasev4948 Жыл бұрын
For me it is the best 4X game for now. Sure, the city placement is a bit restrictive, and some of the other elements took some time to understand, but the final result is objectively better than any Civ game.

I've fallen in love with this game, so much that I bought it again on Steam so i could get the free DLC culture. I really want to see some Jumbo streams with Old World as I can see having a lot of fun and unique games with the live stream community. Pongy Cheese lmao

You didn't have to buy it again...:\ the free DLC was given to Epic owners too.

I bought Old World on Epic games at pre-release. For a long time I regretted that purchase and found it frustrating and hard to get in to. Tried it again when it came out on Steam and found the Devs had been doing a lot of work on it and were very responsive to my comments. I really appreciate that all the early adopters were included in the DLC. I am really enjoying the game right now. They have greatly improved the game. I no longer regret buying it. Lots to learn but well worth it.

I like 4x-games conceptually but a big issue I have with many of them is that they often contain tasks that throughout a playthrough become more and more of a chore. Especially when I have to do this type of task more and more the bigger my empire becomes and the relative importance of the task becomes less and less meaningfull. Old-World unfortunately also suffers from that issue. In particular the tile-improvement-management. The more cities and workers you have, the more time has to be invested into figuring out what tile-imrovement to build next. Old-World even adds a new chore which is gathering resources from bonus-tiles with a scout. The orders-mechanic kinda keeps the issue at bay but I'd rather not have it in the first place. It just increases the time between the actually interesting bits of the game, which clearly also are present. And of course the overall play-time also goes up. I much appreciate systems like in Stars in Shadow, Songs of Conquest and also Dune Spice-Wars. They all have in common that you build your new system/town/village with a few things with low constraints and you never need to touch it again unless it doesn't fit your strategy anymore. Actually I'm getting more and more compelled by digital board-games like Gaia-Project. No decision there is just a chore you do over and over without putting in any thought. Every decision really matters for the outcome and the outcome is relatively soon. My ideal 4x-game would be something where you are an entity in the game and travel around. But the twist would be: You can only interact with an entity when you are actually there. So when you have 5 cities you can't micromanage all of them every turn. You'd have to visit one after another to give them their new order.

I've come to really enjoy this game after several starts and stops. It does several things to advance the 4x genre. Specific city sites to limit massive city spam, the Order system to make you choose which actions are most important on a given turn, production being treated very differently, the AI being competent at combat, an undo move/turn button (no more save scumming!), deciding what kind of character you want your heir to be, etc. etc. and over all of the that an event system which can immediately take the game in a different direction. It makes the mid/late game a lot more interesting than other 4x games especially on higher difficulties. The game all taking place in a compressed time period means your warrior/slinger units stay relevant basically the whole game which I also really like.

One of the things that stuck out to me at release was the vast majority of the negativity about the game centered on the EGS exclusivity. It was hard to sift through all of that to get a good read on the game as an observer.
@wanderinroy2 жыл бұрын
The mix of Civ and Crusader Kings is what drew me to the game. Instead of setting aside so much time to learn both of those games, and getting a lot of things confused while doing so, I could play one game, Old World, cutting down on the time to learn and the confusion of trying to pick up two games.

I've recently fallen in love with 4x and strategy games in general and although my wallet is starting to hurt from buying and enjoying all of these games at once, I have no regrets because I haven't enjoyed gaming this much in years. Plus it led me to finding this awesome channel :)

Yeah, it's a top game, AI is far superior to Civ. I bought it on EGS on release and a year later, still love it. Having a break from it for a few months as I've played it to death, but looking forward to the new content.

Does Old World have intrigue for assassination and political victory in battles like Crusader Kings 3?

My nine year old is a massive Civ VI fan, enjoys Humankind, and is just starting to learn EU4. I'm trying to find out whether the interpersonal relationships in Old World veer the game into the "you need to be a little older to play this, kid" pile for him. Anyone who's put some hours in got any help for me?

The dynamic story events in Old World are T rated at worst. You don’t have the level of debauchery that CK has (incest, satanic cults, etc). The most inappropriate event I can think of is when your leader is drinking wine late into the night with his/her courtiers, and you have a choice that says “See where the night takes you… [SIRE A BASTARD]”
@venisontron2 жыл бұрын
Some of the events are a little bit adult themed, like having an affair, having a bastard child, having someone assassinated. Not nearly as bonkers as CK3, which in every game spawns a religion where nobody wears clothes and it's perfectly fine to marry your mother or father. Or where you can create a new branch of Christianity with ritual cannibalism

I bought the game pre-release and have gone through stages when I played intensely, having learned, or tried to learn, the next level of the game. I am just at the level of understanding city specialization; I am basically a putz who enjoys 4x games. I played Civ 1 like a maniac, but honestly never played it well: but I did have a ton of fun with it. There are things that happened in Civ 1 games I played that I wil never forget, like when I thought I was doing well because I just grabbed Hoover's Dam, when I ran into the Aztecs who politely mentioned that "We back up our threats with nuclear weapons!". Nuclear war followed and settler armies formed to clean up pollution, etc. Will Old World deliver that kind of thrill? I don't know. I am a bit less pessimistic at this point, and most of my gaming time is Old World, and I won a game on "The Strong" so who knows. The key may be that every game I play makes me want to play again.

One of the best things I enjoy about old world is the combat. This may sound wierd but I really hate the seperate battle field that is used in human kind, it annoys and frustrates me. I realise that I can automate the combat, but I hate having to make the decision to do that. I love that old world has made the decision to automate combat, it makes my life easier.

I really enjoyed the tutorial and my first 100 ish turns. Then the rest became way too slow to play. My PC is way above minimum specs but this seems to be in an issue across many people. I’ll keep trying with smaller maps and AI tracking off as late game comes in since I did enjoy it. Civ VI and Humankind are still more enjoyable because of performance but if it gets fixed it might be a contender!

The hurry production exploits by the AI is a bit much. They need to tone that down. Other then that, I like it a lot.

Not hard to be better than Civ 6 (which was allegedly made by Disney and tested on kids in a dark bunker in Germany, allegedly). Old World is a good hybrid of Civ 5 and Ck3 and brings more to the table than Humankind did. At this stage I wouldn't consider Ck3 a new 4x game though, so if you are asking if Old World is the best new 4x game, I'd say yes :)

I found Old World surprisingly boring and that rather fast. After 10 hours I dread playing it and feel like ive seen everything. I already wanted to hit refund 3hours in but that was too late for steam. Then I gave it another 7 hours and it didnt get any better. On the contrary something about the CIV games are keeping me going to go for that one more turn.

There are things I like about Old World but it doesn’t feel like a living, breathing world. It feels too video gamey and doesn’t give you the feeling that the world can function without your direct involvement. Games like Civ and CK3 feel more like you’re a small part of a grander world whereas in Old World everything centers around the player. It has an asymmetrical feel to it.

I think it makes sense, for two reasons: it has improved significantly since it was first released into early access, and it has a bit of a learning curve. For me, Old World is a game which looked like I would already know how to play it, but in reality, I didn't. The more I learn though, the more I can appreciate the numerous new ideas. It's too early to say if it will be the "best 4x ever", but so far, the design is looking very intriguing.
