Hello, the resistance of a winding is infinitely small compared to the insulation resistance (a few ohms to tens of Mohms). It's therefore normal to find the same insulation value on all three terminals, as the windings are interconnected in the motor.

I have a special place in my heart for the old XE Trane condensing units. They were so good and lasted very well. I work on quite a few to keep them going. Newer units aren’t anywhere near as good. I’ve seen compressors bad right off the get go. Absolute shame in quality.

I hear that! Appreciate you watching & your response🙏 It is a shame how they don't make them like they used to but this is everywhere with every manufacturer. Can't complain, keeps us in business😁 Stay safe out there & stay tuned for new videos every week!

Got one of those instruments, used couple times and it checked good. Here is my scenario, got a burn out compressor and I was showing my helper how a new compressor will read, oddly enough the new compressor also checked bad insulation, not grounded obviously. It left scratching my head. We went ahead and complete the replacement. It ran and was doing its job. Just sharing what I found. Feel free to post if you seen a compressor like it.

yo is it true this megohhmeter isn't really the right way to test the compressor ... since each company lists what's considered the lowest amount the compressor can function on ?? I just watched a video where the tech was showing this. like the megohhmeter condems compressors when they really work because it's based off the megohhmeter rating not the actual compressor manufacturers

Yeah with today's safety guidelines you can't be jumping up and down on boxes like that to serious issue either customers to set up a ladder or you have to bring up your own extension ladder The good old days are gone
@joehead12943 жыл бұрын
I'd have to say the live, dead, live test is safer and before using that method, test meter leads by switching to ohms/cont. and shorting leads. Don't forget to change function to volts after checking leads. Now who you think is going to all that trouble?

Can we get an accurate reading by Hooking up the wires coming out of compressor instead of terminals ? It Does Matter?
@JumpermanTech2 жыл бұрын
That would not exactly be an accurate compressor reading because now you are measuring the wires AND the compressor. A damaged wire could fool you into thinking the compressor is bad. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for new videos every week 🔧⚡️

Camera angles were a bit tough to see in some clips as I was wearing a camera on my head but if you listen and watch you'll understand exactly what to do. One lead on a compressor terminal then the other grounded to the compressor casing. Repeat for all 3 compressor terminals (Start, Run & Common) I will make another video that is clear to see. Thanks for watching & stay tuned for new videos every week🔧⚡️

You should be a licensed hvac tech with epa, but checking electrical you don’t need 608 certification. Only if there’s a possibility refrigerant could be released

I’m curious if this megger works properly on 460v equipment. Aren’t you supposed to apply double the voltage to the winding? So in this case this is a 230v 3 phase RTU. That megger applies 500v so that is double of 230v but what about a 460v compressor? Shouldn’t you be applying 1000v to a 460v compressor? Just curious. I was thinking about purchasing one of these meggers. Nice video 👍🏻

"You should have EPA license before touching any type of equipment that has refrigerant" - only if you are a tech by trade. You have to pass an EPA-approved test to earn Section 608 Technician Certification, for under 5lbs appliances type 1 you can do it online. You don't have to be a section 608 technician if you service your own HVAC. Under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, EPA prohibits individuals from knowingly venting refrigerants containing ozone-depleting refrigerants (including HCFC-22) as well as their substitutes (such as HFCs, including R-410A). That's it. Free to add R22 if you are a homeowner, free to evacuate. You will not be able to buy R410 in your local store without 608, but get Type 1 Open Book Certification online and problem solved. Or go ebay

In the proccess using Skillcat for my epa 608 cert and all the other training they have so i can start working on our warehouse hvac.hopefuly there legit. Ive learned alot from the hvac guy who was willing to teach me. Repairing/servicing Almost 100 rtu units. my boss wants me to start doing basic troubleshooting/repairs like fan motor swaps/ anual testing/cleaning. If they dont give me mofe money ill go somewhere else. The hvac guy already said should do well in hvac from what ive helped him with so far. I can unnoficialy do car ac repairs so its time to move up to the big boys

If your a real hvac tech with years of experience you can meassure any compressor with a clamp multimeter or any multimeter...

That tool is useless for Copeland scrolls, they state that a good reading is 0.5. You need a fluke to test lower than the 20 that the supco goes to.
@bryanswanson5007 Жыл бұрын
I reccomend saving up for a real megger bro, these supcos are notorious for bad readings, another tech i work with used to use one and he would test a motor that tested out good according to the supco and my fluke said otherwise on multiple occasions. Ive heard same bad things from other techs as well. not worth it, why do you think theyre so cheap? Gotta ask yourself why they cost hundreds less than a proper megger. Be safe.

Yes you will need a better mega when you're testing commercial industrial units which cost a lot more money😊

I've had brand new lennox units with US Motor for the blower literally burn out the idf motor in less than 8 months everything was within the rate RLA on commission and even when replaced with another US Motor that one burnt out in lime 6 months. Will never buy another US Motor again.
