Very good video, you might want to explain what an insulation resistance test is actually testing for, ie potential resistance to ground through windings? I really enjoy your videos, keep them coming. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

I'm trying to stay my head around these basic concepts as I'm finishing up a motor restoration. In this test, you checked each lead to ground, which essentially let you know if there was a short to ground or the condition of the insulation. Is there another Megger test where you check the insulation between windings by either connecting two lead pairs to the Megger? Or would you do that by connecting a lead from each of two windings to the megger? Based on my continuity test last night, I determined that the single phase resto motor has two run wingdings and one start winding. I know that's probably basic knowledge for a pro, but I'm pretty stoked I was able to learn enough about ac motor characteristics to make the distinction between the two. So my last test before I reassemble the motor is to check the insulation, I'm just confused about whether there is a check between windings, a check within windings, and the winding to ground check you did here, or are they all the same?

You missed some tests. you didn't clarify either is you are testing an AC motor with permanent split capacitor, centrifugal clutch dual speed, two poples,...but anyway you should test the between the rotor and windings not just against the case or enclosure. And by last check the between windings with an ohmeter. Otherwise you could have a false positive.

JumperMan, I'm currently a student in trade school for HVAC. Is this meter only for single phase motors or is it for any motor? I would think for any motor, but confused based on the title of video.

It'll work with 3 phase as well. He's just measuring insulation.

No. A multimeter checking resistance is only sending out about 5-9v. An IR test is designed to test for insulation breakdown leakage current and insulation resistance standard procedure is to use double the operating voltage to see if the insulation is pushed to failure

Be careful if you use this meter on a Copeland scroll compressor. Read Copeland's information on megging a scroll compressor and you will be surprise on how low the reading can be and still be a good compressor. I've condemned good Copeland scroll's by using this meter, it said bad but the compressor's were still good. Please read the information from Copeland.

I don't understand. The motor you are testing is single phase. One wire is ground, that ground to housing should read 0 meg ohm.
