This week I diagnosed a bad control board because I saw no LED light on the board.This york package unit had a transformer just like the one in this video, and I did not know how to test because I rarely see them and because of my lack of knowledge I didnt test. I more experienced tech went out after me and did all that you just did and the transformer had no 24V coming out which powers the board. Man, I feel so dumb. This video will save me!

Just what I needed! Needed to replace the transformer and was not sure if the 24V output was DC or VAC. Seeing your meter set to AC cleared that up for me. Now I feel confident I am ordering the correct after market transformer. Thank you!

Very grateful for your excellent video. Last night we spent a very warm night at the Florida keys because our A/C would not turn on. I spent several hours last night trying to find the problem. This morning I watched your video and was able to find the control board with a blown fuse hidden under a couple of steel covers inside the air handler and fixed the problem. I had called several air conditioning companies and the soonest I could get one to come was tomorrow. Thank you again.

Thanks man I really appreciate this information during these hard times. I've found that my furnace has 120 volts coming in up until the transformer . Then it stops and I have no 24v volts. Just ordered the replacement transformer. The circuit board 3amp fuse didn't trip so I'm praying the board is OK. Upon further inspection of the transformer I've noticed what looks burnt cheese and the black terminal wire connection to the coil in the transformer is toast. I'm betting betting that's stopping me from getting the 24v. Now I gotta figure out why this happened. Again thanks for the info I know this comment is lengthy but I really do appreciate the video keep making great content.

I just moved into a new home and want to instal an ecobee. I went to the transformer and only have 1 segmenet of 24v through the RED secondary, the GREEN secondary is grounded and doesnt have constant 24v. The GREEN wire is connected to my BLUE C wire. the result is that Im not getting constant power to my thermostat C wire. Is this a wiring problem?

What is a step down transformer? Is the transformer in the furnace the source of the "RC" or "RH" power that the Nest Thermostat uses on the wall? Is it possible for the furnace transformer to not send enough power to the thermostat but enough to the furnace?

Excellent video. Just curious, if the thermostat has no common(blue) wire, would it be ok to check voltage between R and Y,or W or G ? Thanks JMT.
@JumpermanTech2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You can still check between R & any other terminal wired. As long as the thermostat is in the OFF position, between R-Y, R-W & R-G, there will be a 24V reading. This will indicate your transformer is good. You can always also just check the 2 wires leaving the transformer but to save time, this method will work🙃 Thanks for watching! Be careful when you say always. The primary is not always the high side. A more accurate statement would be the primary side is the input side. The primary on a step up xfmr would be the low side. Also many hvac system thermostats require and have no common terminal,so in those cases, the best place to confirm system control voltage would not be the tstat. The better place would be the location or the xfmr, usually the furnace or air handler.
