Karl's comments about critical thinking reminded me of a meme that you don't need the picture for. "In the 20th century the news told us what happened and we had to decide what to think about it. In the 21st the news tells us what to think about what happened and we have to figure out if it actually did happen."

@@p03saucez I am usually impressed by journalists. Mostly we choose to inform ourselves by opinion commentators that have no regard to fairness or accuracy. Commentators are entertainers, if they get ratings they have done their job. It has long been human nature to develop our opinions from our entertainment and entertainment is presently at a tragically low standard.

The holster on your chest on deployments is for vehicle mounted operations so if you have to you still can easily access your pistol while in the vehicle when your primary weapon system goes down. Typically after a vehicle mounted patrol the troops would use a quick detach method and move the weapon from their chest to their hip or a drop leg platform. Hope this helps great collab vid.

Wow! I totally did not expect Deviant Ollam to mention 'NY77: The Coolest Year In Hell' ( from Rock Docs on VH1 ). Truly underrated documentary about the growth of "street corner art" and the diy attitude of the rap / hip hop and punk scenes at that time. Being from Chicago myself, I feel that a lot of people overlook the impact of how economic hardship spurred change in artistic expression during that specific time and place. To think: if not for one blackout in 1977, rap and hip hop would have taken many more years to rise in prominence .. Thanks to Karl, James and Deviant. I will definitely search for more by Deviant Ollam. (:

One of the main reasons .300blk has been able to maintain a foothold on the market is due to the the brass and bullet compatibility. Brass can be easily made by reloaders by trimming and resizing readily available .223/5.56 cases. It also uses standard .30cal projectiles which are reasonably priced and widely available. This means people are able to make reasonably priced ammunition despite relatively expensive commercial options. Cartridges like 6.8SPC require specific brass and bullets which are much less common. Magazine compatibility is another reason why .300blk has succeeded and 6.8SPC failed despite being a superior cartridge.
@DeviantOllam
@DeviantOllam 5 жыл бұрын
agreed on all points.
@thereal_vader9713
@thereal_vader9713 5 жыл бұрын
Phillip Cameron I think the only problem .300blk solves is a when loaded with a heavy subsonic projectile and used in a suppressed short barreled AR. In most other applications, I agree that a 5.56 with appropriate sized bullet would be superior. I was referring only to why the .300blk has managed to maintain popularity while so many other cartridges have failed. It comes down to cost and availability of ammunition and components.

7.62x39 will not be obsolete as long as people have to buy their own ammo. 300blk is just too expensive. Of course, 9x39 will do what either of them will do well even better when it inevitably takes off.
@leathery420
@leathery420 5 жыл бұрын
Thing is 7.62x39 really only took off in the west because of cheap surplus ammo. 9x39 is so niche it will all have to be made in the west which won't make it any cheaper than .300 blk.

17:20 Having good conversational skills can save your life or prevent a fight. On Monday July 1st, I confronted a non-employee interloping in an employee-only area of my store and acting strangely. He claimed to be looking for a specific beer that he said was sold out on the sales floor (it wasn't - either he was really stupid, or just lying to me). I visually located some of the beer he was looking for. I then politely asked him to wait for me in the public area, and reminded him that this an employee only area, like I would any other customer. I didn't turn my back on him at any point. He started getting really jumpy and said "I'm just gonna leave", like getting his beer was suddenly not worth it, and he bolted from the store. I later realized that from his body language, he was probably going to jump me if I went for my radio.

There are some skills with transcend technology. They tend to be trade skills, though. Like the "feel" of just how tight a plumbing fitting has to be--and that's a learned skill. It's not a defined torque stetting that can be aleviated through technology, either. making up electrial connections with wirenuts is another; there is a definite "goldilocks" for those. Ditto how tight to make up wire clamps on fixtures. Where it gets complicated is that technology adds skills to be learned. You have to know which technology to use, how to use it, and how much is too little or too much.

So as a counterpoint to the civilian chest carry... when out riding my bicycle, I wear a camelback. Being a bigger (fatter) guy the chest strap is a little short. So I designed and had made a center pouch that holds my id and a G29 with an extra magazine. It is shaped such that unless I open it or you picked it up and felt the weight you would never even know it was there.

In my industry (air transportation), automation has greatly improved safety, but has also degraded skill to the point where many pilots do not possess or maintain the basic skill necessary to ensure a safe outcome when the automation fails or misbehaves. Some fairly high profile tragedies could have been avoided with basic stick and rudder flying skills. It is important that we use technology to enhance our capabilities, not replace them.

I wore my M9 in a chest holster in the Army. I was a 19K - M1 Abrams/Stryker crewman. When driving either of those vehicles, having your pistol on your chest is a lot easier to access than a standard belt or drop-down holster. When we were going to kick down doors, on the other hand, I would've worn the Beretta on my waist, to make room on my vest for 5.56mm magazines.

On 300 Blackout over 8mm Kurtz. In the current market the .308 bullet in 300 black out makes it superior because .323 diameter bullets aren't that common. Or at least in my experience it is easier to get cheaper higher quality 308 bullets that it is 8mm bullets. This is part of the reason I believe 7mm Mauser cartridges are easier to find than 8mm Mauser cartridges. Since 7mm is used in other calibers and 8mm is not.

I live in NH and the best way to find places to shoot is to wander around in the woods until you find a clearing with spent casings on the ground; if it's 300y from a road or building and it's not marked "no trespassing" it's usually kosher.

Karl does bring up very valid points regarding the 300 Blackout. Although with my opinion is based on life experiences that I have had, I will never forget building a retaining wall with my brother. When he dropped a cinder block on his foot I almost pissed myself laughing, he broke two toes. By the logic of we need to keep people safe from their own stupidity we must now start a letter-writing campaign to ban all cinder blocks from being used in construction in North America. but honestly it was actually hilarious watching him jump on one foot screaming I broke my toe, I broke my toe.

No we don't need to ban cinder blocks but if you're going to do that kind of work, you do need to wear steel toe shoes.

In my experience, the chest holster thing is less about role, but rather what load carrying equipment you have (although these two can be linked they are not always). The chest holster thing spiked when you started having people using plate carriers with cummerbunds or some other form of all around storage space above the belt line. When you have a constant ring or pouches around your stomach drawing from the belt is impossible, and even from the thigh can be tricky depending on how Michelin Man'd up you are, so the best option can be to raise the pistol above the cummerbund onto the chest. I personally hated this whole setup so even when I was issued a vest with a cummerbund (British, Osprey Mk 4) I ditched the cummerbund and only had a few pouches on the vest and most of my kit in webbing with a drop leg holster. I assume I am not alone, as the next armour the British Army has adopted (Virtus) doesn't have a cummerbund for pouches (just front and back plate carrier)and instead uses a separated belt kit. With this I don't think I have seen a single chest holster, they are either fitted on the belt kit or on a drop leg rig.

I am much more critical of 300blk than you all apparently. Honestly, how many people use its suppressor capability? Likewise, how many people wouldn't just be better served with a heavy AR round like 458 socom for hunting whatever they would hunt with 300blk? To top it all off, its very expensive and its standard round competes with the cheapest centerfire ammo available 7.62x39. Not to mention the subsonic loads are basically 45 acp levels of power... going supersonic on it you can push a 200 gr to around maybe 1400 give or take? 450 bushmaster and 458 socom both push 300 gr bullets past 1800 fps. And don't give me the "its cheaper to just change barrels on an AR for 300, rather than convert to 450 or 458" because if you can afford to shoot 300blk in any quantity, you can afford the conversion. Its a cool round for replicating 7.62x39 in an AR without funky mags (though personally I would just get an AK for the price of ammo and conversion), but otherwise I really just don't see the utility in it.

Chest holsters are useful when sitting in vehicles. If you’ve got a plate on and sat in a vehicle a holster on your hip is pretty hard to get into.

The issue with 8mm kurz is that it has the same cartridge base as .308 Win, so it would probably be better to do it from a .308 platform. Maybe the POF?

300blk The biggest problem in ammo development, if it has a proprietary magazine it will not sell in the US market. Reading about the development of 7x46 uiac ( based on necked down 7.62x45), Cris E. Murray "performance has been constrained by the necessity of the cartridge to be able to be chambered in a M16 or M4"
