Great Q&A, guys! I enjoyed it very much. Just to chime in on the media manipulating what you say or do, I've only been reviewed by local newspaper once and I can't help it but to loathe it's guts. It was in a local gallery and the reporter asked me what the things we forge are and how they are made. I tried to abolish the myth of "magical hundredfold nippon steel" and tell her that "damascus", or rather, patternwelded steel is more or less a decorative thing, that used to have a purpose in history because of worse steel quality (but decoration was part of that, too) and especially in Japan, save for the use of forgewelding of hard steel edges on softer, more malleable and shock resistant lower-carbon steel body, be it axe, knife or other tool. And the result? She wrote that I said that the stuff is pure magic and insurmountable objective quality. I explicitly said that it isn't this. Sigh. People.

i really liked your stance on visiting places of battle and human suffering, and would absolutely love a inrange series on the matter. I see a lot of upsides of a format like the one you mentioned. keep it up karl&ian on a personal note: having visited 3 KZ i remember standig on the ramps in auschwitz with a clear view to the railway gate and the chambers, left and right there were wooden barracks as far as you can see. only having visited the smaller camps of dachau and flossenburg, i was confrontend with the immense size of the auschwitz complex and the amount of killed people, augmented with large barrack sized unterground rooms filled up to the ceiling with literally 10s of thousands of glasses, empty shoes and suitcases with names still written on them. As i was standing there the impressions sunk in, my heartrate increased, sweaty palms, sounds getting much more quiet, time started to slow down, my eyes focused on every scratch on the stained walls of the chambers. i got a very strange feeling of not beeing a human but part of my surroundings. my head spinning and fuming and changing focus frequently while consantly taking in unimagineable facts about the camp and its people. i wandered around the whole day, on occcasion sit/stand still for 15-20 without realizing it myself. The only time i felt similarly displaced and hunted as on this day was an evening were i took 3 good glasses of MDMA and smoked 2,5 grams of cannabis in one sitting. a truly revealing and mindblowing visit. if you made it here : Greetings, have a nice day ! :)

My mother's father was in WWII on the Eastern Front and when he came back in 1949 he was pretty strange (I never knew him). My father-in-law's PTSD was from stateside service (picking up after plane crashes). Overall, I'd say the Western Front in Europe was probably less traumatic, if you survived.

My grandfathers served in the Navy during WW2 and they would have added another reason for preferring Europe to the Pacific: Disease. Virtually everyone was sick all the time in the Pacific whereas European troops could find themselves virtually illness free. In the Pacific, Jungle Rot was essentially universal and easily 50% of troops could have some severe illness like Malaria, Malnutrition, and other problems that came from the inability to keep sanitation standards up due to the poor climate and chronic supply shortages.

When you were talking about using a Vepr or Saiga for home defense, the biggest downside to those is the fact that the mags will squish the plastic shells and make them completely unusable after a relatively short time. There's a reason why box mag fed shotguns aren't really used by any militaries or police anywhere in the world, even Russia doesn't actually use the Saiga and they substitute it out with a pump action.

That's also why we don't see England or other very anti gun regions coming up with new designs as well. Most of their civilians have never held a firearm let alone know how they work. Laws and regulations are stunting our technical advancement. Look at the change in small arms from 1900-1960 and the change from 1960-current. Not just in the firearms world but areas we are regulating ourselves to a standstill.

It's so surreal being there and you just sorta get it. It's amazing at point du hoc, the destruction, there are steel and concrete bunkers with craters taken out of them and rebar all twisted up looking like confetti. There are craters that are thirty feet deep and fifty feet across after being filled in for 70 years. Then standing on the cliff it's just amazing and how did men actually do this, climb those cliffs and actually drive off the soldiers who were holding it. It's just amazing to be places, like the grand canyon as I'm sure you know can't really be adequately described with words or even pictures. In general the entertainment industry treats the firearm community differently. I know the guys who found two of the handguns used in the last Indiana Jones movie, a Webley and a 1911. They offered to loan the handguns for filming and have them returned afterwards. That was a no go, but I kind of see the production company's point on that isuue. However, they also refused to list them in the credits as the source of the guns. Remember credits go on for like 5 minutes now and the dude that provides the melon balls and chicken salad gets credit.

Great video. Concerning the 416, I had the chance to use one in Afghanistan on my second tour. The AWG guys brought some in for us to use and get feedback in "real world" conditions and mission use. To be honest we were not that impressed. The 416 offered no real increase in reliability over our issue M4s from what we saw and the handling was actually worse. The piston system made the weapon feel front heavy and unbalanced, on a stripped carbine, and when we added WLs and our PEQ2s it felt really cumbersome. I have nothing against piston driven ARs but I personally think the hype over them is often misplaced and with some shooters borderline hysteria.

Roller delay blowbacks main drawback is the lack of any way to lower the chamber pressure before the extractor rips the rim of the shell casing off. This is why they have fluted chambers on the higher pressure 5.56 and 7.62 HK versions, and why it never went any further, in my opinion.
@nerdvernacular96507 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest problem with the delayed roller blowback guns is the fluted cylinders. Ammo is too expensive these days to go around ruining your brass. It would be really hard in the modern market to successfully market a new rifle that rendered your brass un-reloadable, especially when there are so many great weapons out there that don't have that problem.
@nerdvernacular96507 жыл бұрын
Arms companies are always thinking about the civilian market at the same time. Semi auto versions of military rifles are often a notable percentage of sales.
@derfurz86186 жыл бұрын
@@nerdvernacular9650 i know it's a year later but I think that if a company like HK works tries their best they would be able to remove the fluted chambers. The roller lock system was designed from 1945-50 and nobody seriously worked on it since then. I doubt that the Sig had the capabilities at the time to remove them and HK only made improvements to the G3 because no Army would buy new barrels for that.

In my own personal experience roller delayed blowback does actually lend itself quite well for accurate Guns. Of course I can only tell you guys what I have seen and done with them. Im a German Army Infantryman, to be precise im the DM in my platoon. For about one and a Half years I have been handeling the H&K G28, witch is, as you know, a highly accuriced 417. It a fantastic shooter up to 850 Meters. some people might perform good shoots at even longer distances with those guns I cant say that for sure but 800-900 is what I can definitley confirm. Before I was issued that Rifle I carryed the DM version of the H&K G3 for 3 years. those guns were sent back to H&K, were rebarreled, outfittet with a Schimdt&Bender Scope and had a new semi auto only triggerpack installed on them. That was our main DM refle for the last 10 or 15 years. When I was in northern Afgahn I was carryed that gun every day on every Patrole we did. What would you say If i would tell you that this rifle was also accurate up to 700 Meters? For a DM Rifle thats all you need if you ask me. I think if someone would revisit the whole roller delayed blowback concept and mix in some new ideas and learned lessons form the last 2 decades of world wide conflicts, this new gun could easyly compete with the SCAR, HK416 and the other top notch combat/assault rifles of today Thank you guys for all the awesome work you do, please keep the fantastic videos comming! :)

You talk about the post WWII desire to increase soldier's effective fire rate and multiple projectile bullets; I'm curious if you've ever read Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's book "On Killing" c. 1995 or books he quotes often in his work, "Men Against Fire" c. 1947 by S.L.A Marshall or "Battle Studies" c.1888? (I don't really know the original, but a translation to English was done in 1920) by Ardent du Picq? I ask because they looked at soldiers on the battlefield and tried to study effective fire, and they all found that men were generally reluctant to actually engage the enemy (fire their weapons) or if they did they didn't do so very effectively. I know you guys save these Q & A sessions for your Patreon supporters so I don't expect you to address this topic necessarily in a video but if you are familiar with the works I mention above or decide to check them out and are inspired to address the ideas, then I'd be very interested in your thoughts. Even if an news organization went out and did a expose on the AR-15 to separate myth for reality. The only way the general public will watch is to include some sort of drama. That is why shows like this and Forgotten weapons is so valuable to the firearms community. Thanks for all you guys do!

They went away from delayed roller because of the stampings and the extra machining required for the bolt. To make a DRB (Delayer Roller Blowback) is more labor intensive. The AR is much less.

Lighter components, like largscale carbon nanotube manifacturing, or perhaps Boron fiber manifacturing might make guns either liter, or allow for greater propellant loads / nanothermite propellants. That still leaves the issue of recoil, that cannot be eliminated without increasing complexity of design. Guided ammunition is the other seemingly obvious next step.
@ChielScape6 жыл бұрын
The reason as I understand for most piston ARs being worse than DI ARs has to do with the AR being designed *for* DI. The impulse on the bolt carrier is different with a short-stroke piston, which increases excentric forces on the carrier. Getting hot at the gasblock shouldn't be an issue unless you have a shit hand guard design and/or are dumping your entire combat loadout on panic mode. Carbon fouling and heat will dry and foul the lubricant and increase (third-body) wear. A clean DI gun is going to be as reliable as a clean piston gun but keeping the DI clean requires more maintenance than a piston gun, which I've caught you saying before as well. In the field you may or may not have the opportunity. Now, DI guns have gotten a lot better since 'Nam, with improved surface quality and high lubricity coatings and treatments on bolt carriers and other such workarounds, but, and I quote; "it's still a workaround". Now on the other side of the arguement is usually accuracy, generally in favor of the DI guns. I am not qualified to make a definitive statement here, but there is no lack of accurate guns in either category and you seem to gain much more from general quality of the rifle than any inherent differences in the gas system. If even a roller-delayed blowback rifle can be accurized to quarter MOA (referring to the PSG-1 here), then no gas system is going to be the cause of any missed shots. A more valid point is that there is slightly more weight up front with a piston system, and depending on the configuration of the rifle this may or may not be significant. Obviously in the WWSD rifles this will be significant. You won't convince me of the same in a .308 DMR or a mass-produced military assault rifle (carbon fiber does not lend itself well to mass production and base material costs are high to start with). While one might argue that there is no particular end-all reason not to go with DI, I would like to make the same statement for pistons and therefore it should and will come down to personal preference. DI does not deserve to get shit on as much as it does, but I prefer piston guns (a *well designed* AR15 or any AR18-based design ranging from G36 to SCAR to what have you) even if they are not quite as superior as some people make them out to be.

11:10 - You also have to take into account how conflict in general is changing. The very nature of military engagement has been on the 'small' scale. Not wide-scale deployments but irregular forces, proxy-conflicts, insurgents, guerrillas, etc. The SOF are used more now than ever before, so perhaps there is something to be said for the marriage of high-tech, specialist armaments and their unique (but now widely used) capabilities. At what point are SOFs used frequently enough to warrant such expense? Especially if they become your go-to, over other more conventional units. The needs of a military in terms of equipment are dictated by the type of engagements they find themselves in, and so the direction of firearm development proceeds in tandem. The Limitations of my knowledge of a FAMAS bolt: The thing with the lil doohickey tail-thing protruding from it. 30:55 - I'm really surprised there wasn't more focus on just the environment as an 'enemy.' 37:40 - Great opportunity to plug something - Italy gets a lot of flak, if not gets downplayed entirely for their role in both world wars - close to (if not over, I'm not sure the exact figures) 1,000,000 Italians died on the 'Southern front' of WW1, over a not-gigantic stretch of land. In ridiculously mountainous terrain where there are STILL to this day frozen bodies found high in the alps. That there is a type of warfare on parallel with the Pacific in the Second World War.

I kind of disagree with your argument about the inaccuracy of the roller-delyed blowback system...the Stgw 57 outiftted with "sport sights" is one of the most accurate firearms in our shooting sports here in Switzerland...maybe this doesn't really count as an argument since the rifle was originally expensive to produce...

I always wondered why straight-pull bolt actions are so rarely seen in the US. I'm really curious about the potential of a lever-delayed system like the FAMAS or a free floated roller delayed rifle in one of the bench rest or long range cartridges.
@whisperchainsaw1027 жыл бұрын
Straight pull bolts require more force to open and do not provide a significant increase in speed. I think we don't see as many bolt actions in general because we created the lever action and that took a significant ammount of the design and market from bolt guns.

Would using powder that has more energy per grain (or Joules/gram) not allow you to make cartridges smaller and smaller while keeping the velocity of the projectile, thus allowing rifles, magazines and ammo to be lighter due to the smaller cartridges? Delayed roller has acceptable/good accuracy if the receiver is stiff enough. The problem is that oz for oz, a rotating bolt is more accurate than a delayed roller, because the reinforcements for a delayed blowback receiver are heavy. There's a slight reliability edge for the roller, especially for questionable ammunition, but I think, basically, there was a different system that worked, so people just went to it. Delayed roller might be better, I'm not sure, but it's not better enough to drive a development program.

The FK Field Pistol is a balanced action gun, and its supposedly coming out this year for a ridiculous amount of money. Hopefully you guys can get your hands on one, though i´m not holding my breath for it. 7500 dollars for a handgun is insane. As for the multiple-shot concept, theres the AF2011A1 and other double barrel pistols, plus that double barreled AR that i forgot the name of out there, so it shouldnt be such a big issue either. But the shooting videos of the AF2011A1 brings up a different issue, in that those two barrels never hit the same two spots, even from a bench rest. The left goes in one spot, the right goes in a different spot, and it basically increases the spread that way.

In my last carbine class, the instructor covered the objective lenses of optics. Probably 90% were able to grasp Bindon. I got it early on, but then lost it and could.not connect.

One thing I can add concerning the eastern front of WWII is the impact it has had to this day. There are many cities and towns in Russia, that have almost only women in their 80s and 90s. During WWII, the Soviet government would come through and round up all the men regardless of age basically, and send them off to the front to die often without even giving them uniforms. And after the war, none of the men came back and the towns didn't recover, they just had all the family left behind there waiting around to die of old age

In response to the lack of "new" roller delayed blowback systems we're currently seeing a huge resurgence in manufacturing from companies such as PTR, POF, MKE (Zenith), Omega, Brethren Armament, Dakota Tactical. Hell, HK even re-released the MP5k to the US market after how many years? I think it's a grand time to be a roller lock aficionado right now.

If your counter recoiling mass was made for one specific load and barrel length you could theoretically eliminate recoil. If you then switched to a lighter recoiling load your gun would recoil down or backwards. :p

I don't have the money to support y'all on patreon so i'll just ask this here. Do you think that a modern roller-delayed blowback service rifle using some of the technology from the psg-1, such as the rollers not rolling, would make it more viable for military or civilian use than hk's current rifles?

I can find a basic pump action for about 1/2 what I can find even a basic coach gun for, and the time difference in time for two shots is pretty minimal. I'm sticking with pumps. For the WWII question...it might depend on if you were of Jewish descent. Also, the director of Come and See lived through at least some of the Battle of Stalingrad as a child (I know Ian and Karl know, but for other commentors).

Major props to Karl for calling Ian Gun Jesus to his face. Ian's subdued reaction was hilarious.

As far as roller blow back goes, I would ask is it more or less complex than today's piston and DI systems. That may be a clue. You may be right on accuracy. I mean look at the recoiling barrel in the long recoil design of the A-5 and Johnson Rile. (The Barrett M82 and M107 use a recoiling barrel but no others come to mind)

the thing is in my opinion about small arms design for the military right now there are 2 well designed rifles in the world the m16 and all its various forms and AK and all its various forms. what makes them both so good is 1. if bad guys from outer space came a long and say the US and Russia just started handing out a rifle and 2 mags too any one passing by. the person that has never fired a gun in there live can be shooting in minutes. 2. both are cheep and easily made. so if a military needs 1 million rifles they could crank them out fast and pay less for them. with 3d printing you can even make disposable forms of eather rifle if need be. for example 3d print 2 million m16 lowers. they may only be good for say 10 mags but there would be lots of them around with a good menny non disposable ones around if you lived long enough you would get your hands on one at some point. 3. both do a lot of things well. they have short comings but both can get the job done in most cases. for example both accuracy is pritty good and reallyablty is pretty good. after woching inrange and forgotten weapons for a while now. the m16 Ak are at the puntcal of what militarys have been looking for a long time. and there is not too much that can be inprved apon excped what there made of or the amo they use.

l wonder how accurate a roller-delayed gun like the G3 could be made (and how costly), if for example the differently shaped ''rollers'' from PSG1 were used.
