Bit more Shorter appears on Shepp's "Doodlin" and on the NYAQ "Call It Art" box and that is unfortunately it. There is also the matter of his written works -- literary, philosophical and music theory -- which were apparently rejected by a number of publishers. A prospective project for Human Side Press is to publish some or all of these writings.

thanks for the information. yes I was intrigued by the mention of unpublished novels while reading about him. sounds like an amazing project you've embarked on, very much looking forward to it!

I love the track Face of the Deep off All Seeing Eye. Everyone is on the hunt for Marion Brown now, including myself, and they don't pop up often in Arkansas.

That intro was fun no doubt. Never seen that LP anywhere, the last Al Shorter. very sweet. That Shandar Tusques LP looks pretty stellar. Gonna have a peek for that one. I still await the Lovely feature but this is a great app.

Alex awesome spotlight on Alan Shorter . I’ve never seen the Marion Brown on Fontana and ESP I’ve been digging his catalog recently. Alan Shorter Orgasim sounds interesting now I have to seek that one out . Shepp Coral Rock is a killer . I have to say in the early 70’s they were great jazz visionaries such as Alan shorter, Don Cherry to name a few great stuff Alex .

lovell, yeah the French stuff is near impossible in the US but orgasm can be had if you're patient on fleabay. hope the air is better out your way.

Alex, this was a fantastic dive into the world of Alan Shorter. I remember a bunch of ''us'' discussing ''Orgasm'', probably on a Davis Winchester live stream. I never owned an album by Marion Brown, as a leader, I gotta listen to ''Iditus'', which sounds like the name of the Greek god of Morons ( or idiots, ha ha). Alan Shorter died when he was engaged to marry Ruth Ann Hancock, a cousin of Herbie Hancock. Shorter also spent time teaching at Bennington College in Vermont, where Milford Graves and Bill Dixon were also faculty members.

yes that engagement was an odd factoid i had read about. yes thanks for mentioning he was an educator, at least for a brief time.

@@diamond_marimba Alex, my gut feeling is that if Alan stayed in Europe, his career might have been more fruitful, but he appears to have been a restless spirit.

I recall when you got that Verve LP how stoked you were and for good reason. Great LP I still have never seen in a bin.
@diamond_marimba Жыл бұрын
yeah verve must have buried it, not even sure why they agreed to put it out, doesn't fit with Bill Evans, Kenny Burrell and cal tjader...

nice feature... l only have Shorter on All Seeing Eye and a couple of Shepp lps.... l always found it puzzling that his album came out on verve, never seen it throughout all the years....

I think the clip was from the Magnetic Monster since it shows Richard Carlson who went on to be in the creature from the black lagoon & Frank Gerstle who was in a few Dragnet episodes. I think this was the only movie they appeared in together. Wayne Shorter was apparently a big comic book fan, so probably not all that surprising that his brother would have similar tastes. I have that ESP Marion Brown album but not any of the records led by Alan Shorter. Thanks for putting them on my radar!

yes that's the film, I'll leave a link to that preview i used for those interested. interesting about Wayne and comics, had not heard that.

I have (VMP version), and love Orgasm, All Seeing Eye and one or two he did with Shepp. Really like his compositions, and his style of playing but haven't gone on a deep dive yet.. Like you said, unfortunately a lot of the record he was on are long overdue for a reissue as the OGs are quite pricey.
@diamond_marimba Жыл бұрын
i'd say 5 of the 8 records i showed are not that hard to find under $50 since they have had multiple pressings

Shorter sounds like a dogs dinner of foolishness, but merge it with some ideal visuals it blends in well.
