On June 30th, 2024, twenty-something mother Vanessa Chaput was preparing to go out for a jog along the road near the campsite. Vanessa and her husband, Dave Leegstra had recently welcomed a little girl to their family and Vanessa was working hard on getting back into shape following her pregnancy.
Luna was a German Shepherd and was Vanessa’s favorite jogging partner. Vanessa would always put a leash on Luna and the companions would bounce along the jogging path for a while together. Before departing Vanessa put her hair up with a hair clip just before grabbing Luna’s leash and heading out the door for an evening run. I could find no source indicating Vanessa brought along bear spray or a firearm on her run on this day.
After a short distance, Luna and Vanessa found their groove and settled into a comfortable pace. As they rounded a bend in the road, Luna began acting differently shortly before the dark shapes of four grizzly bears materialized off the road several yards.
Being a native of Haines Junction, Vanessa knew that a close-range confrontation with a single bear could end badly, let alone four bears. She noticed that none of these grizzlies was a cub, and they were each full grown and powerfully built. She decided to try to slink away quietly before Luna tugged the leash from her hands and dashed toward the grizzlies.
It isn’t clear if Luna had smelled or seen the bears, but either way, she instantly went into protection mode. As soon as Luna began barking, two of the grizzlies disappeared into the brush as Vanessa pleaded with her to stop.
The largest of the grizzlies didn’t run off though. As Luna chased the fleeing grizzlies, the massive boar charged toward Vanessa. With the boar bearing down on her, Vanessa clenched her jaws in terror and held her hands out in front of her, still taking small steps backward. As her mind drifted to her husband and daughter a resolve welled up inside of her to fight for her life.
Most people have no idea how quick a grizzly bear is. It seems unfathomable that an animal that large can move so rapidly across the most challenging terrain. Before Vanessa could do anything to avoid the bear's jaws, it clamped down on her right forearm crunching bones and tearing flesh wherever its teeth touched. In a series of rapid bites, the grizzly chewed its way along Vanessa’s forearm. The grizzly reached out with both paws and embraced Vanessa in a bear hug to pull her closer to its jaws.
The crunching of bones wasn’t a new sound to this massive bear, and it wasted no movement or time in biting onto Vanessa’s head. That is when a curious thing happened. As the grizzly chomped down on the top rear portion of Vanessa’s head, her hair clip crunched under the power of the bear's bite. It must have believed this familiar crunching noise was the sound of Vanessa’s skull or neck breaking. It momentarily let up on its attack.
This lull in the attack allowed Vanessa to scamper away from the bear. Knowing her survival depended on her finding a way to escape, she hid behind a tree and remained quiet as she watched the bear. Vanessa compressed herself into the smallest shape she could hoping it would hide her location from the bear.
But a grizzly bear isn’t easily fooled by distractions. The giant boar bounded up to the tree that separated it from Vanessa and pawed at the ground in an intimidating display of power. Luna had now returned and barked at the bear while dashing in and out. The angry boar turned toward Luna and gave chase, giving Vanessa a few seconds to look for an avenue of retreat.
Ducking into a ditch, Vanessa fled toward the nearby Alaska Highway in hopes of escaping the bear attack and finding someone to help her. After emerging onto the highway, Vanessa called her husband on her cell phone, setting off a series of first responders to come to her aid. As she waited for help, blood poured from the wounds in her misshapen and broken right forearm and the deep gashes and puncture wounds in her scalp.
An ambulance sped toward Vanessa’s location and medics were soon bandaging her wounds while loading her onto a gurney. She was rushed to Whitehorse General Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
By 10:30 PM, conservation officers had responded to the campground and began hunting for the aggressive boar grizzly. They ordered an immediate evacuation of all campsites at the campground causing a flurry of activity amongst the occupants. Camper Lee Carruthers stated that he could see several armed wildlife officers converge on the campground. As he packed his vehicle and began to depart, he heard four shotgun blasts shatter the silence just after 2 AM.
