Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to Many Glaciers Campground in Glacier National Park, Montana. The mountains in this area are part of the Rocky Mountains and are generally around 8,000 feet high with Mount Cleveland stretching up to 10,466 in elevation. The granite peaks retreat to valleys filled with timber or pine, fir, and spruce trees mixed with stands of aspen, willow, and berry bushes. Common animals here include white-tailed deer, elk, and moose. Predators in this area include black bears, cougars, wolves, and grizzly bears.
In the Many Glaciers area of the park, there had been a series of grizzly bear run-ins that were alarming. The plant life around the campground makes a favorable lowland forage site for sow bears raising cubs. The nutritious plants and abundant insects provide key nutrients for growing and adult bears. Boar grizzlies will often battle to include these kinds of areas in their territory to increase concentrations of sows for breeding purposes.
Given the quality of bear food sources in this area, bear populations have been ticking up by about 30 bears each year. With governmental protections preventing hunting, the population has increased significantly in younger bears which may be learning how to fit into the bear and human worlds.
This learning curve involves younger bears raiding campsites and breaking into coolers, and garbage cans. This habituation of human sources of food creates a dangerous and tenuous situation that presents a danger to humans and bears alike.
In the Many Glaciers area, two young grizzlies had been reported exhibiting aggressive behavior. One of the young bears had a particularly aggressive attitude toward the presence of people.
On July 7th, 1976, William Schweighofer was sleeping in his tent at the lower campsite at Logging Lake. William was awakened in the middle of the night by the overwhelming pressure of something pressing against him. As he reached his hands out of his sleeping bag, he could feel the round large shape of a grizzly bear's rump pressing him down through his tent.
William yelled and pushed against the bear's rump in an alarmed effort to scare it away. Instead of fleeing the grizzly turned its jaws toward the man's voice and clamped its jaws on his arm. It used its bulk to hold him in place until it got a firm grip on his shoulder and repeatedly bit into his arm and shoulder as it did it.
Once it got ahold of him, the bear began to drag William several yards, while he was still in his sleeping bag and tent. After dragging William many yards, the bear lost interest and meandered off leaving the man in pain and suffering from lacerations and puncture wounds to his arms and shoulder.
Only a few weeks later, on August 15th, 1976, 17-year-old Pam Sue Wise and her friend Pam Benda were having fun while hiking along the Ptarmigan Falls Trail which led to Iceberg Lake. As they hiked along they glanced behind them and noticed a huge grizzly bear following them. The women immediately dropped the backpacks from their shoulders and pulled themselves up into a nearby tree.
The women were hoping the grizzly may have been interested in the contents of their backpacks but watched as the bear approached the tree and stepped over their backpacks. It stood on its hind legs and scratched at the bark of the tree, trying to find a grip to climb up after them. It growled as it stared at them and raked its claws over the tree.
After a few futile attempts at climbing the tree, the grizzly turned and wandered off a short distance. Just when the ladies thought they were safe, the grizzly returned to the base of their tree. It clawed the tree and tried to pull itself up to get at the women one more time while staring at them and growling.
Having been frustrated in its attempt to climb the tree the grizzly wandered off for good this time. Eventually, the women were able to escape and reported the incident to Rangers.
A few weeks later, on September 9th, 1976, Roscoe Black and Theresa Waden were enjoying a hike to Stoney Lake. While near the lake two grizzly bears stormed out of the bushes along the trail. The bear bit a big hole into Roscoe’s calf and lacerated Theresa’s arm, shoulder, and back before departing.
On September 19th, 1976, Karen Kuntz was relaxing while reading a book near the outlet of Fish Gap Lake. As she read a rustle in the nearby bushes drew her attention away from her book. Two huge grizzly bears stepped out of the bushes a mere five yards from Karen to her horror.

Addicus now this was a very interesting set of circumstances, the park service rangers should have been proactive about these 2 bears approaching people as the 1st sign as the bears only become braver to approach people to see if they could be prey! Just don’t understand they could have saved this poor women’s life! Thanks for another story as only you could tell 👍 RIP Mary.

When will humans realize that wildlife lives in nature and that humans who want to explore the nature must be prepared to fully defend themselves. A tent is not a safe place to sleep from either wildlife or humans. It may sound harsh but it’s the truth. I would not risk my life to sleep in the woods.

My brother was a surveyor in B.C. He was terrified of running into a grizzly, but one day, it happened. He spotted 2 cubs & claimed to the top of a tree. He didn't bother to visually locate mom, but he knew she was near. She tried for over an hour to shake him out of the tree, but finally left. He stayed up the tree Gorman hour in case she returned, but She didn't. He made a run for his truck & never went back to the area.

Hi Atticus... Another story with a dreadful ending. The fact it was September played a huge role because the Bears at this time of year are more aggressive and will try and eat anything they can to fatten up for hibernation. Bears almost always avoid groups of people but the more aggressive bear 🐻 was in preditorial mode so it broke all of the normal rules. This is the first time I ever heard of Bears throwing up the remains of a human because they couldn't digest it. I also agree that it took the Rangers way too long to deal with these 2 Bears and she ended up paying the ultimate price for their incompetence

Hello Atticus! The girls did everything right, but it still wasn't enough. I hope this serves as a lesson for women, and people in general, that it's not a good idea to go camping where you know that grizzlies are out and about. My condolences to Mary's family and friends for their loss. This was tragic and my heart goes out to all involved. Again I thank you Atticus. I think your videos should be mandatory watching BEFORE people are allowed to enter these places. Maybe then they will learn something to save their lives. If it were me, I'd turn around and go back home rather than pitching my tent.

Ladies, it's never too late to learn to defend yourseIves. We do not have to be helpless victims of any predators. I'm 60 and carry a .38. It took me about 3 months to save up for it on a fixed income as I'm a disabled RN. If I can handle it, being less than 5 ft tall, anyone can. I refuse to make my grown sons worry about my safety, or to live in fear. Visit your local gun store or gun club and learn how. It's very empowering to at least have a decent chance at defending yourselves. Guns are tools that do absolutely nothing to anyone. They just sit there until you pick one up. Unfortunately, bad people will get ahold of them if they are determined enough. The only choice we have is learning how to handle them safely and properly, it isn't difficult. We are all born with right to defend ourselves. It's up to us to be responsible for our own safety.

Excuse Me. But if you are or were referring too the Movie with Clint Walker & Martha Heyer. Called The Night of The Grizzly. You are mistaken of it being the same Story entirely. The Night of the Grizzlies, story that Scary Bear Attacks is speaking of. Took place in Glacier National Park 🏞️🏞️ in the Summer of 1967 at Trout Lake, and up at Granite Park Chalet. On the very same Night of August of that Summer. Where Two Young Women were Mauled to death ☠️💀 that same Night by Two different Adult Bear's in two different locations a few hours apart, upon that same night. Please I hope this explanation clarifies any doubt or questions. You may have had? Thank You.

Thank you Scary Bear attack's for telling this very fascinating Story so completely. The Summer of 1976 was the last yr our family had spent, our Vacation over in Whitefish Montana, on the other side of Glacier National Park. That was most likely a week or two prior too this tragic Mauling of the Woman happening? Recalling details of that Summer's events now. IT was my last year of HS, and we had moved from Canada, to Wyoming, during it. While we had been on vacation. From my personal recollections. There hadn't been any News 📰🗞️ in the areas various papers about the Bear problems in the Park 🏞️ prior to or until after the Attack & Mauling had taken place. Of course after the Attack had been reported? Everyone was asking, obvious questions of how it could of happened, like it apparently did? With the very precise explanation that Scary Bear Attacks gave here? IT was definitely a case of Government agencies & dept's, taking the reports & the incidents details into thier close held possession. Thus Not then allowing any News agencies too hear or report on the incidents. So that the General public wasn't aware of the increasing Danger's, they faced there. Until they were actually in the Park 🏞️ where the Park Rangers & Park personel were then supposedly taking precautions to tell & inform the Visitors of the Danger's. To me many of this Stories fact's were new, & really totally unknown to Me, until I heard them in this Story. Such new item's, & things of the younger Bears digestive system, their feeding habits or thier habit's n odd personality traits. OF which most other writer's had given mention or remarked about, in prior text's. As I said this episode, was truly eye 👀👁️ opening, & very completely more informative about everything than a lot of previous one's have been in the Past. Thank You for Sharing, and May Miss Mary Mahoney RIP by our Lord's Side. 🤔🤔🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸📰🗞️📰

We are not on the bears "menu", so they don't usually wish to eat us. Most behave aggressively if they have cubs to protect, or if they feel threatened when people get too close. Also, how a person behaves when encountering one can make a difference between diffusing the aggression or encourage them to chase and attack. It's about maintaining personal safety by carrying deterrents with you, and understanding bear behaviors and what to do if one is encountered. An aggressive black bear requires different tactics and reactions than an aggressive brown bear does. And it's never a great idea to tent camp in bear country. They provide no protection at all.

There is no such thing as being “more vigilant” in thousands of acres of woods….There isn’t enough rangers on earth to be able to watch everybody at any given time….There is also no such thing as steering clear of danger in back country because you NEVER know….Your comment only makes sense in a perfect world, too bad it’s not realistic in the real world….A better piece of advice would be to accept the risk when you visit these places and be more prepared .

😮I agree but if this happened in the 70s.. then we were not near as smart or informed about bear attacks as we are now. So I really can't say that the park rangers were in the wrong for not putting the bears down. At that time since glacier attacks in 67, they were really trying to up human awareness around bears and making sure that food was not left out and they were not being food condition, but trying to still keep people coming to the parks for enjoyment. We've learned so much since then...thank goodness!😊😊

I don't think it is so much human flesh that bears would have trouble with but the clothing we wear. For while some things like cotton is organic and likely would be easily digestible... even though cotton may not be a part of a bear's diet in the parts of the country where cotton is grown (and thus wouldn't apply in the NW US)... there are many other fabrics that we use that are synthetic fibers, many of which were developed during WW2 to replace materials that the US couldn't gain access to while the war was on. These synthetic fibers may be a lot tougher than things like wool or cotton to digest, and it would be THAT material that really hurts a man-eating bear.

@@altitudeiseverything3163 - I'm not talking about their ability to slice or cut through the fabric with their claws and teeth. That's all entirely possible. I'm talking more about their ability to safely digest it. A bear's stomach acid would surely break down polyester just as our stomach acid would... But how much time/energy would end up going into that? What would end up being the chemical reaction? Would something in the material become poisonous because it's synthetic in nature? All that sort of thing.

To all blaming the rangers how about having some accountability. The bears are home so when you venture into their domain you sign up for what comes with it. When the ranger said there was bear activity in the area the thought didn’t come to anyone to pack up and leave? I personally don’t blame the rangers or the bears. Blame the humans who chose to stay where the predators reside. It’s that simple and yet people still venture out to bear country and people still get mauled.

I think people just don't think it will happen to them. But I also think Park Rangers have a responsibility to remove problem bears known to attack humans, period. You just can't have bears that go after humans. Yes, I'm all for conservation and coexisting with wild animals, I'm very passionate about it. I don't want to live in a world without wild animals. But known, problem bears are just a tragic accident waiting to happen. As much as I don't like a bear having to be euthanized, sometimes there's just no choice. A bear conditioned to see humans as a food source will always be dangerous bear. 💯

There are more options today for effective handguns to take camping in bear country than there were in 1976. They still could’ve had them though. In either case, there’s NO way I’d venture or camp in bear country without an adequate firearm. And I wouldn’t give a rats fartsicle if there were National park laws prohibiting carry, which there likely were in 1976. At least in the US, there’s a second amendment, and venturing into perhaps the most vulnerable place one can go does not negate that right to self protection, even if a handful of bureaucrats and lawmakers wrongfully assert your ability to defend your life ends inside national park geographical limits. And if camping in grizzly country, I’d setup a simple trip wire perimeter around my tent, maybe even a motion light, to both give warning/time to get ahold of my gun and to have visibility on its location. SO many instances over the years have involved bears attacking someone in their tent. The tent may feel like a safety barrier, and it can be in some cases, but a determined bear will bust right through. You want time to react.

That's right. I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6. I'm not going anywhere that's potentially dangerous without a firearm, period. We travel to a neighboring state to see music shows and we don't have reciprocity with that state. Idc. I will risk a fine before I risk our lives. Straight up 💯

It seems they refuse to take responsibility for knowing they had 2 problem bears, that had negative encounters with humans and did nothing until someone was killed. I'm very passionate about conservation and I don't want to live in a world without wild animals. But bears who are habituated to human food sources are always going to be dangerous bears. Sometimes you have no choice but to remove them from the gene pool. How many times do people have to be attacked or chased by a bear before rangers take action? I love the wilderness and have spent many happy hours exploring it. I think there's a balance between the needs of animals and the safety of humans. Problem bears are a very small percentage of the overall population so eliminating a few of then doesn't harm their species. And if a bear attacks a human in a predatory way, there is no choice but to remove it. They failed those girls imho. It doesn't bring your loved one back but in these cases I think people have the right to sue for wrongful death. They were negligent, bottom line.

So two bears were killed (maybe a third), neither of whom was the bear who killed Mary? What happened to tranquilizing the bears and moving them to a remote location? I feel bad for Mary, but also for the bears. These encounters are bound to happen when we enter bear habitat. You should never go hiking in grizzly territory without bear spray and you have to know how and when to use it. It's not always effective but will give you a chance to escape unscathed.

an electric fence around the campsites might have helped, bear spray is always a "must bring" along with a shot gun, no hand gun. although, this might not have made a difference either. bears must have been exceptionally hungry or extra aggressive due to a variety of reasons. they don't attack out of insanity, there is always a reason, we just don't know everything that is happening in that bear. they get aggressive when they feel threatened, during mating season, when experiencing hyper-facia, been agitated previously by human presence. we don't always get to know everything. if only they could speak....

This just proves to me you can't trust a bear and think you know what his behavior will be. I camped at Glacier National Park and it's loaded with bears. I only camped under the stars for on night although I wanted to stay a week cause I was camping right by the camp hosts so I felt safe but some jackasses drove in with a house on wheels and grilled steaks! I though well this should bring a few bears around to come eat us all up and so I went to sleep and I swear I heard something outside of my tent and then felt something big press up against me but was half awake and half asleep. A bit later All I was hearing around 2:00am when awoken was the house on wheels making noise and cars and lights leaving so I got up after they left wondering what the f? It wasn't until the next morning I heard from the people that stayed that there was indeed a bear by my tent and everyone freaked out. I thought to myself if a bear was outside my tent I was too cold to even move and too tired to care so I showed no fear so he went on to everyone else but left me alone. I was gone after breakfast. It was a lovely place to bad about the bear and the jerk people with the steaks.

It depends on the state mostly. We have around 24 states, give or take with constitutional carry laws. Others you may be required to carry a permit and some have very strict laws, where its almost impossible to get a carry permit. In my state it's $20 for a 5 yr carry permit and we have around 18,000 black bears. Truthfully, humans worry me more than any animals do.

practicing bear safety guidelines only gives you a slightly better chance of avoiding bears in bear country. Only a chance! The chance of you encountering a bear goes up if your not bear aware but being prepared is no guarantee you wont encounter one! If your in bear country.....count on it!!!!! That's what will save your life. I dont like the false sense of security offered by a few simple directions from a ranger/government employee that could be a diversity hire and completely incompetent! If they really cared they would make sure at least one of you has bear spray and other devices to scare off bears. Words mean everything to socialists but dont mean shit to a bears! If your going into bear country get smart before you go, not once you've arrived! Watch some videos and learn how to use bear spray. It doesn't always work but I'm positive it would have in this situation. Mary would be alive if anyone would have sprayed that bear!
