I was amazed at how long that paragraph went on about the ice cream stand, felt like lifetimes came and went haha! But who knows maybe the writing style is something you get used to? Maybe? I've read two Darcy Coates now and really really liked Dead of Winter, great pacing, and the one I'd definitely recommend, and I also read Hunted which was really fun, but a bit too long! Lore sounds amazingggg, when I watched your Mermaid vlog, I thought so but hearing it again- wow it sounds like fun! :)

Haha it was a very long opening paragraph! I do think the author was just making an impression and the writing is less over-the-top when you read on. But you definitely have to be in the right mindset. I do plan to give it another go in the future when I'm in the mood for something surreal. Ohh thank you, I will check out "Dead of Winter" and "Hunted". I have a couple of her haunted house books which I plan to read in spooky season 👻 I had a lot of fun with Lure. It's only a short book but packs a punch! Thanks so much for supporting my channel! 💖

The folk horror book....ecky thump what a thinking sounding book!! The cover is ever so pretty tho!! Some interesting books mentioned!! I'm working my way through Peter Laws The Frighteners, which so far is a really good read. I can recommend it definitely!!! Have a lovely week!!xx

Serves me right for buying it without reading the first paragraph 🙈 Ohh I'm glad you're enjoying "The Frighteners" I'll have to look that one up! I hope you have a lovely week as well 💖

Completely agree with you on Diavola! I, too, was hoping for a much more moody, gothic tone and setting. Definitely didn't care for the ending either. That being said, it was a quick read, and I did keep turning the pages to see what would happen, so all in all it wasn't too terrible lol.

I'm glad I'm not the only one 🙈 At least it was a quick read, so it didn't take up too much time!

Hey Ellie, I saw Lost in the Garden in Waterstones last week and I'm so glad I didn't buy it, I'd DNF it after that first page 🤣 I've read Hunted by Darcy Coates and really enjoyed it, even though it was 450 pages it was quite a fast paced book. I want to read some of her haunted house novels as I've heard that's where she excels. Great video as always.

Haha serves me right for buying the book without reading the first paragraph 🙈 I do think that opening was just to set the tone and the writing is dialed down a bit after that. But still, I need to go in with the right mindset to enjoy that one! I have a couple of her haunted house books on my shelves, so might try one of those next 😊 Thanks for watching and commenting 💛

The cover of lost in the garden is so beautiful and the premise sounds amazing, but I don't think I could stick the writing!! I feel like I need to re-read the song of Achilles, because I've read and loved other myth retellings since that one, but this was the first and I liked it less than everyone else did. Maybe I hadn't really got into that genre yet. Circe was incredible. Sorry I never replied to your last comment - yes a buddy read would be lovely, or a coffee as we're local!! Buddy reads I'd be looking at November time onwards if you want to do one 😊

It does have a gorgeous cover! I'll have to give it another try, when I'm in the mood for something bizarre. It's difficult when books like "Song of Achilles" are so hyped up because we go in expecting our socks to be blown off (which is a little unfair on the book). I wasn't as moved by "Song of Achilles" as other readers have been and did come away from the book feeling a little flat because of that. It's a shame because, if I had no expectations, I probably would have enjoyed it more. That's OK! A buddy read and/or coffee and catch up sounds great 💖

Great video Ellie, I've got womens lore on audible. I've got the wager to listen to from the library on your recommendation. I love folk horror.😊

Hi Ellie, I have read Song of Achilles and I agree that the war scenes are difficult to read but I did enjoy the relationships and how it all wraps up. I have finished Empire of the Vampire Diaries which I did enjoy but found the ending a disappointment. I am reading Ascension at the moment, I am only into the first 100 pages and I’m not sure if I am enjoying it but I will carry on with it. ❤

Hello, thanks for watching and commenting 💖 I'm glad you enjoyed Song of Achilles, the relationship development was so beautiful and tragic. Sorry you found the ending of Empire of the Vampire disappointing 😔 I hope you end up enjoying Ascension. I have that one on my shelves, so will be really interested to hear your thoughts!

I'm late getting to this but, great video as usual. I've actually heard a lot of people say the same about not getting in with Diavola, seems a very niche read. I don't know that I may have recommended this before, if so forgive me, but there's a manga called "The Girl From the Other Side" that may be worth a look for your taste. It's an odd combination of cozy slice of life, and creepy folk horroresque. Ive been quite enjoying it, and it's quite short by manga standards.

Thanks for watching and commenting 😊 I've read the first volume of "The Girl From the Otherside" and really enjoyed it! The only reason I haven't continued is because the artwork in the paperbacks aren't very clear. The images are very dark and haven't printed well which is such a shame! I'd have to get the hardcovers to enjoy it property (and they are expensive 😅)
@reedmorebooks

@@bibbidibobbidibooks That makes total sense. I've been reading the hardcovers myself, can't compare to the paperbacks, but no complaints about the tint of the art in them. Def expensive, but they're also 3 of the paperbacks in one bol, assuming you have the same editions in the UK. If I ever hear of them on sale internationally oron digital I'll pass along.

For Lost In The Garden, when you do read it, try to hear the voice of the narrator in a transatlantic accent, kind of like in The Twilight Zone otherwise yes it does feel too overdone lol

Great advise, thank you! I noticed the writing is dialed down a bit after that opening chapter. I think the author was just setting the tone. So, hopefully I'll enjoy it more if I continue on. To be fair, I was intrigued when Heather started hearing her BF in the radio... and do want to see what happens! I'll give it another go when I'm in the mood for something dreamlike and unsettling! Thanks for watching and commenting 🥰

Hi, I just found your channel & subscribed right away. Our book taste align a lot and I am loving the content & overall vibes of your videos. Just wanted to ask if you had read Briardark and Into The Drowning Deep? I have my eyes on these books since quite some time now & was wondering what are your views on them (if you have read those).?

Hello! Thank you so much for subscribing 🥰 I haven't read "Briardark" but I have read "Into the Drowning Deep" and really enjoyed it. It does have quite a slow build, which might not be for everyone, but I loved the messy character dynamics and how realistic it felt (something I wasn't expecting from a book about killer mermaids 🤣).

@@bibbidibobbidibooks Thank you for responding to my comment. Now you got me more intrigued, I will pick up "Into The Drowning Deep" sooner rather than later! 😅 May I suggest you to give "Briardark" a shot & see whether you like it or not. I have heard good reviews on that book generally.
