I'm late getting to this but, great video as usual. I've actually heard a lot of people say the same about not getting in with Diavola, seems a very niche read. I don't know that I may have recommended this before, if so forgive me, but there's a manga called "The Girl From the Other Side" that may be worth a look for your taste. It's an odd combination of cozy slice of life, and creepy folk horroresque. Ive been quite enjoying it, and it's quite short by manga standards.

I was amazed at how long that paragraph went on about the ice cream stand, felt like lifetimes came and went haha! But who knows maybe the writing style is something you get used to? Maybe? I've read two Darcy Coates now and really really liked Dead of Winter, great pacing, and the one I'd definitely recommend, and I also read Hunted which was really fun, but a bit too long! Lore sounds amazingggg, when I watched your Mermaid vlog, I thought so but hearing it again- wow it sounds like fun! :)
@bibbidibobbidibooks
@bibbidibobbidibooks 13 күн бұрын
Haha it was a very long opening paragraph! I do think the author was just making an impression and the writing is less over-the-top when you read on. But you definitely have to be in the right mindset. I do plan to give it another go in the future when I'm in the mood for something surreal. Ohh thank you, I will check out "Dead of Winter" and "Hunted". I have a couple of her haunted house books which I plan to read in spooky season 👻 I had a lot of fun with Lure. It's only a short book but packs a punch! Thanks so much for supporting my channel! 💖

Hi Ellie, I have read Song of Achilles and I agree that the war scenes are difficult to read but I did enjoy the relationships and how it all wraps up. I have finished Empire of the Vampire Diaries which I did enjoy but found the ending a disappointment. I am reading Ascension at the moment, I am only into the first 100 pages and I’m not sure if I am enjoying it but I will carry on with it. ❤

Completely agree with you on Diavola! I, too, was hoping for a much more moody, gothic tone and setting. Definitely didn't care for the ending either. That being said, it was a quick read, and I did keep turning the pages to see what would happen, so all in all it wasn't too terrible lol.

Hey Ellie, I saw Lost in the Garden in Waterstones last week and I'm so glad I didn't buy it, I'd DNF it after that first page 🤣 I've read Hunted by Darcy Coates and really enjoyed it, even though it was 450 pages it was quite a fast paced book. I want to read some of her haunted house novels as I've heard that's where she excels. Great video as always.

Haha serves me right for buying the book without reading the first paragraph 🙈 I do think that opening was just to set the tone and the writing is dialed down a bit after that. For Lost In The Garden, when you do read it, try to hear the voice of the narrator in a transatlantic accent, kind of like in The Twilight Zone otherwise yes it does feel too overdone lol

Great advise, thank you! I noticed the writing is dialed down a bit after that opening chapter. I think the author was just setting the tone. So, hopefully I'll enjoy it more if I continue on. To be fair, I was intrigued when Heather started hearing her BF in the radio... and do want to see what happens! I'll give it another go when I'm in the mood for something dreamlike and unsettling! What a haul! I LOVED Under the Pendulum Sun, and it didn't get as much hype at the time as it should have, even though Ng (pronounced ING) won awards off the back of it. I'm really excited to read A Botanical Daughter - I actually preordered it, no idea why I haven't read it fully yet, but I started it soon after it was released then wanted to wait for the right time, because I knew within a few pages that I'd really enjoy it. Also looking forward to getting to Service Model and the Fiona Barnett. I hope you enjoy these books, when you get to them... Evening Ellie, I'm glad you had a great birthday. The lavender fields looked stunning. You're going to love A Botanical Daughter, it's so creepy at times but also a little bit whimsical. It's definitely a slow burn, but I feel that helps the horror hit harder. I absolutely loved it. I struggled a bit with How to Become Dark Lord, the world is ok and some of the characters are great but for a portion of the book I found the main character to be insufferable. That did change halfway through though and I enjoyed the second half of the book. I read it on kindle and there are a lot of footnotes but the formatting was a bit strange so I was constantly flicking pages, I think that problem will be alleviated with a physical book. Some of your new books sound awesome especially the folk horror ones. I really enjoyed the video, take care.

Happy birthday! I just added The Botanical Daughter to my TBR a few days ago. Sounds really intriguing and that cover is wonderful! The Dark Between the Trees I have a really good feeling about, I've had it on my shelf for a long while now, been saving it for this Halloween season 🎃 Edit: I did a review of How to Become the Dark Lord. I liked it but had mixed feelings. Part of my issues arise from the portrayal of the main character, combined with being written by a man. I'll be interested to know if you have the same issues.

I really like these themed videos. Talking about mermaids , have you read The Murmering Bones by AG Slatter. It's a really dark, gothic mermaid story. I think I have recommended Slatter to you before, I'm not sure if you got on with her or not, but this is quite different and a novel too rather than a short story. Another mermaid story that I'd like to read and have heard is very good is The Mermaid of Black Conch. 🧜‍♀️
