Hi Kim. Last Thursday I harvested out my shelling peas and snow peas. In their place I have Martino's Roma tomatoes growing. Friday I harvested out the kohlrabi and potatoes, and I harvested Swiss Chard. Saturday I picked zucchini, crookneck squash, lemon squash, and cucumbers. I have fall potatoes chitting for a July 2nd planting date. I don't have a replacement crop for the kohlrabi yet, but soon, so I covered the bare soil with leaf mold. In July, I ll start seeds for cabbage, and transplant the seedilings where I have carrots growing, and pulled up the kohlrabi. In August I'll start seeds for brocolli, cauliflower, and Napa Cabbage. They are my replacement plants for the summer squash and ground cherries. The cantaloupe and watermelon will be replaced with turnips and carrots. From there, I'll have to decide on what I want to grow into the winter-definetely more garlic. My leg still hurts. The nursing staff yelled at me for not going to the ER at last Friday's hospital appointment. No, I still havent seen a doctor for it. Ready or not, I have two peach trees to plant, and a Prairie Fire crabapple tree coming in the mail Tuesday, so I have to get digging. It is close to summer. I am supposed to be sitting in the shade, eating porch tomatoes, and drinking sun tea while watching the garden grow, not working my butt off. LOL!😄😄😄

Some areas of California have brutal arid heat which is really hard on seedlings. By June I must already have plants well on their way with a good root system. 105 - 110 is the normal day till October. Are you located in the coastal area of Cali?

I left several pepper plants in the garden last fall. No pruning, no watering. It bloomed in February and now I harvested about 80 beautiful red peppers. A little smaller than usually ( no watering and no fertilizing through the winter). In San Diego.

I have Swiss Chard. Your sunflowers look amazing! Mine are always devoured by grasshoppers and other insects. The leaves are half gone, full of holes and look diseased. Maybe because I live in the country. I basically use them as a trap crop.

Hi Becky - that's a great idea to use them as a trap crop! Most of mine come up on their own every year, these in the video grow into mammoth plants. Last year they grew easily 10 feet, I had to support them with several T posts. I use the stalks for trellises after they dry up. Hopefully you can get a few nice looking sunflowers this summer. I live in Arizona where our high is 115 degrees to 120 degrees. Will those plants grow in our massive heat?

Hi Putin - that's crazy heat. If the roots are well established, and you mulch around the base 2-3 inches eep, they should do pretty well up to 100. After that, most everything struggles, unless covered with shade cloth. One of our viewers in southern AZ puts up a shade cloth structure for most of the summer, and is able to grow a ton this way. Tips for Harvesting and Storing Carrot Leaves Harvesting: Pick the carrot leaves when they are fresh and vibrant. Avoid leaves that are yellowing or wilted. Storing: Store carrot leaves in the refrigerator, wrapped in a damp paper towel inside a plastic bag. They should last for a few days. Washing: Wash the leaves thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris before using them. These help???? CK

Amaranth is relatively drought-tolerant and does not require a lot of water once established.When amaranth is young and newly planted, it will need regular watering to help establish its root system. Keep the soil consistently moist during this time!

Thank you, Pat. Do not trim the fuzzy tops unless you're removing suckers or improving airflow. Train the vines to grow vertically and tie them to the trellis. Prune selectively to manage suckers and maintain plant health. Support the fruits with slings to prevent vine damage. You are doing great! CaliKim

Yes, chard (Beta vulgaris subsp. cicla), also known as Swiss chard, does flower and go to seed, but this typically happens under specific conditions. If your chard didn’t flower, it’s likely because it was treated as an annual, or the conditions weren’t right for bolting. To see chard flower, allow it to grow through its natural biennial cycle with exposure to cold weather, then wait for it to bolt in the second growing season. I hope this helps ! Silly question - most things change flavor when they bolt. What about the kale? I read somewhere that the flowers didn't change the taste of the greens?

Hi Stephanie - it's actually sweetest in the cooler winter weather here in So Cal, and/or when harvested as baby leaves. I haven't found a huge difference in flavor when it bolts, we use the larger leaves in our smoothies almost every day. So delicious! Which variety are you growing?

Lots of variables here, but here is the most common reason...what are your thoughts? Lack of adequate light is the most common cause of leggy seedlings. The plants stretch toward the light source, becoming tall and weak. Tips: Natural Light: Ensure your seedlings get at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. If growing indoors, place them near a south-facing window. Artificial Light: Use grow lights or fluorescent lights. Position the lights 2-4 inches above the seedlings and keep them on for 14-16 hours a day. Adjust the lights as the plants grow to maintain the distance. Hope this helps! Yes, you can, due to our long growing season. Often peppers overwinter here in So Cal, I'm starting new seeds indoors (they work better when starting indoors instead of direct seedsing) this week for fresh plants in about 6 weeks.
