that initial definition of autism is what my depression tries to convince me I am - a conceited and selfish person totally detached from reality with no regard for others. It's really not a very nice or accurate way to think about anyone...

Bleuler was not describing the autism we know today. He used the term autism to describe a state of being detached from reality and living inward, with oneself, with one's own thoughts and fantasies. This state is found in schizophrenics. Therefore, Bleuler was not wrong in describing the state of autism in schizophrenics (but sharing Freud's ideas about auto eroticism are meaningless here). The mistake occurred when the term autism was borrowed from Bleuler (while describing schizophrenia) to describe cases of autism as a type of infantile schizophrenia. But actually the autistic person also lives with himself and may drown in his own thoughts, but they are not hallucinations or delusions, but rather rational thoughts, even if they are sometimes imaginary.

Well to be fair, they were pioneers. They had to be wrong so that we could understand what is right. I will speak for my own understanding because I disagree with most of the agreed upon shitsoup. My definition of autism is: A mental prison created from physical dysfunction of the brain. There exists different levels of dysfunction in the brain which explains the autism spectrum. My definition of schizophrenia is: a mental confusion brought about as a result of someone's existential dissatisfaction. Autism is inevitably forced on an individual by their environment. Schizophrenia is a survival instinct created by the affected individual in order to cope with imagined stress. I say "imagined stress" not because the stress isn't real but because there's no lions running after us. But in many ways we give more value to the stress we imagine because we think there's nothing worse than: (insert fear here) Why would we think there's nothing worse than losing a job? Those are imaginary stresses that we feel so very deeply that we become schizophrenic.
