Probably not if they made more than a surface level comment on it. 1860 Republicans were primarily in the Northern States and the Democrats were in the South. As well the salient Republican policies of the mid-1860s (activist “big” government, pro-income tax, pro-economic intervention) more or less match up to the Democratic policies of the early 2010s, while the Democratic policies of a century and a half ago (small “limited” government, pro-localism, pro-states’ rights) bear a striking resemblance to contemporary Republican views. So essentially the Republicans and Democrats traded places over the last 150+ years.

@trueblue6201
@trueblue6201 24 күн бұрын
Yep. But back then Republicans were more tied to the Northern states and the Democrats to the South. Over the last 150 years, there has been a shift in political views. Starting in 1912 when Theodore Roosevelt left the Republicans as did his supporters, they became a more right leaning party. The Republicans of today have very different views than those of the 1860s. Lincoln was about reuniting the union, Trump is about stoking racial division and conflict.

I'm curious about this. In presidential elections, do Americans just vote for their political parties regardless of the candidate? For example, if Hitler became the Democratic or Republican Party candidate for the presidential election, would they still vote for him?
@RomanumChristum
@RomanumChristum 21 күн бұрын
Yes they would
@zirconiumdiamond1416
@zirconiumdiamond1416 17 күн бұрын
Probably about 90% do. Political parties are entire systems, such that it is difficult for an individual politician, even a president, to break ranks too much. For example, Biden was originally thought to be a moderate and mostly a caretaker President. However, once he entered office, he was pushed to the left by his party. Trump might be a bit of an exception in that he isn't a classic conservative and is extremely stubborn (for example, he is against free trade and federal limits on abortion, which are substantial differences with the vast, vast majority of other Republicans; rather than be pushed to the right though, he has mostly dragged the party to his direction). So, I could easily imagine people voting for or against him, even if it is a break in their normal voting patterns. It is unlikely that Hitler would get the nomination of either party. Nominees are determined via a competitive election, rather than chosen by party insiders. Presumably, a Hitler-like candidate would become obvious in that process and would not win the nomination.

You don't get it. The Republican Party today is different from the GOP of Abe Lincoln. Abe's Policies were Progressive, Pro Civil rights (Anti Slavery), Pro Labor Unions, Pro Tolerance, Pro Choice, Pro Public Education. The GOP over the years evolved to become Anti-Immigrants, Anti-Choice, Anti-Civil rights, Anti-Labor Unions, Intolerant, Pro Christian Nationalism & Bigotry, ( Christian nationalism is NOT Christianity), Fascist, Anti anything that helps the Poor, Anti-Gun Reforms, Anti Public Education, Anti Police Reform etc. These Policies do not appeal to People of Color. Chicago is the result of a Ripple effect from the Unrestricted Gun Law's from GOP run states. Statistics show that most of the Guns recovered in Crime were from GOP States like Florida. Besides Crime has also seen a downward trend in recent years
