Joey has never acted like a livestock guardian dog, I have seen the dog chase animals on multiple occasions. Joey has only ever been a family pet and should never been left alone with or had access to the farm animals.

I don’t think Joey needs to be rehomed or put down but I’m not sure she’s trained enough to be near the poultry. We used to tell my Newfie to “get” the chickens and he killed one. It was our fault entirely. That was the last time he was near the chickens.

My initial response to a bird injured so badly would be to rinse him in CLEAN water. I know ducks live in dirty water, but medically speaking, I would not rinse his wounds in a filthy bucket of water. I doubt I would manhandle him for videos the way it was done, too. I understand that accidents happen and I appreciate that you show the ups and downs of your journey. Unfortunately, it seems that you have more accidents that happen due to carelessness. Because of this, I think I am done with your channel. I’m sorry for your loss, but I dislike continually seeing animals get hurt when it often can be avoided.

Those maggots probably helped him survive that first night prior to your skilled treatment. Maggots eat away at infected tissue and were clinically used for centuries to prevent and treat infection. Gross but actually very helpful in the right circumstances! Birds, especially aggressive ones are so hard to manage and as poultry they are so difficult to treat. Such a good job done ❤

I’m really sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, I had been worried something like this would eventually happen with Joey, after watching her ongoing chasing behaviour. I can tell she has herding instincts, but they weren’t being directed properly around the birds, and her chasing of livestock often became too aggressive or playful instead of just herding. Livestock guardian dogs and herding dogs (or any dog for that matter, even family pets) should never be allowed to play with or chase the livestock, unless they are being directed by their human to herd them. Herding dogs should not be allowed to herd livestock unsupervised. And any dog should never be left unsupervised with livestock unless you are sure they are completely stock proof. There isn’t anyone to explicitly blame or point fingers at in this situation, and doing so isn’t helpful; I mean, everything with Joey had been fine so far, so it wasn’t something expected, and the duck was also known to be aggressive and possibly an instigator. But this is an opportunity for learning and preventing another death. Joey and the livestock should not be allowed to interact unsupervised now that there’s a known risk, and some of her rules around interacting with them should tighten. She should not be allowed to play with or chase any animal anymore unless specifically herding supervised. If she can’t be controlled verbally around the animals, then she should stay leashed until she can be. I think it would also do her good to do some proper herding training with her, to direct her energy positively, make her into a helpful partner, and improve her manners around the livestock. Good luck with everything, and I hope you don’t have anything like this happen to you guys again!

Australian shepherds are herding dogs they love to chase and nip and that don't bode well for birds. With herding dogs there is a fine line between chase and attack and some don't just chase. He does either need to find a home where he is not a farm dog or the farm does not have fowl or be kept as a house pet away from the fowl. So sorry for your loss. I have lived that many times. Teaching Joey not to touch the livestock is essential. With consistent training and positive reinforcement, Joey can learn boundaries and develop self-control, ensuring a safe and harmonious coexistence with the livestock. They are actually terrible at livestock management in general. They have one of the rarest, endangered domestic duck breeds and they let things like this happen. Nor is this the first time. They "lost" most of their flock a few years ago, didn't they? They either don't respect their animals or they are extremely ignorant of how to manage them and protect them. It's a waste of resources. @@spyroeskimo Not to mention how many times they've killed their bees. One video showed them opening the hive on a very cold day to "check" on them. I couldn't fathom it. They were worried the bees weren't doing okay in the cold so they literally opened the hive thus sealing the fate that the bees would, in fact, die of cold exposure. It's absurd. I personally don't think it's the dogs fault or the owners. Dogs have a natural instinct to chase and attack because of their ancestors which are wolves. I personally think that the owners are also not at fault because how was they supposed to know Joey was going to injure the duck like she did. Animals die its a part of life. I'm an animal lover and my favorite animal is a duck. I own 5 ducks and they are my babies but it doesn't stop anaimls from coming in an snatching them. It's life animals die. He's in heaven with all the other hook bills. He's in a better place. I suggest you do some research in dog behaviors because it's really because of pure instinks. I don’t know if y’all walk Joey but, regular exercise is crucial for Australian Shepherds to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. Despite having a big yard, dogs still need walks to release energy and stimulate their minds. Without proper exercise, dogs may resort to chasing behaviors. By walking your dog regularly, you can fulfill their exercise needs, prevent boredom, and reduce the likelihood of incidents like the one with the duck.

Hard spot to be put in, not knowing. But any tissue loss (retired Vet Tech here) needs to be cleaned properly and thoroughly, most especially from animal bites of any kind, prior to blue-coat, or any topical spray. But most importantly, they need to be seen by a Vet, especially due to the high risk of infections. I understand the closest Vet is an hour away, but your position of guardianship of these animals is to do the right thing, not the easier/lesser thing. Sorry for your loss and good luck in the future.❤ Sidenote: When cleaning a wound, please don't use dirty water, there are plenty of antiseptics you can use. The best way is to make sure you get all the 'dirt' out of the wound, Scrubbing is best, and use Q-tips if you have to, but you really do have to get right in there. 'Dunking' the animal does basically nothing much at all. I hope you don't have problems like this again. ❤❤❤

To avoid maggots she finished her treatment with a big coat of cornstarch all over the open wound. She said flies will not lay eggs in cornstarch. So I’d say you have nothing to loose and try it. A box of cornstarch would be enough for re applications as needed to cover the wound. Good luck Dan

I used to breed birds. When I got "special" eggs, I'd begin incubating them, only putting them under a "ready" hen about a week before hatching. It'd work for the Emu's too. Just let the broody hens sit on random or dummy eggs until it's time for the ones in the incubator to be put under them. Remove the random/dummy eggs, candle to double check if the hen is properly incubating. I did this because if I wanted babies from these special hatchlings, it's better if they are raised by a bird parent until they are almost the size of the parent then they can be moved. This ensures they have the natural behaviors required to raise young without your aid. If they hatch a little earlier or a tiny bit later than the broody hen expects, it's alright. Not that you asked for advice :). I enjoy your videos very much. Thankyou.

Jake, I’m sorry for the loss. It hurts; I know. I have a few encouraging words for you. First, y’all are doing a great job with the kids exposing them to the harsh realities of life on a farm; they’ll love passionately while remaining level-headed. Second, your situation is unique concerning your location, Joey, vets, etc. You’re vulnerable with your audience while maintaining a tough skin. There are recliner coaches in every field; ignore them and their thoughtless comments. You make calculated plans as you move forward there. Not everything works the first time and you grow from it. Keep moving forward in that same way. Your needs are special and it might be time to employ a dog that is specially trained to help you with the fowl while keeping Joey closer with the cows and the family. While this was not a very pleasant video for you to make, your edits and presentation drew me in, captured my attention and then caused me to feel the hurt and pain that y’all have experienced with the loss of other pets and most recently Junior. You’ve grown a lot in that area! Whatever you decide you need to do as a next step, I have no doubt that you and Becky will discuss and come to the best decision that’s right for y’all. Homeschooling your children, they learn and play next to you as you work is the most ideal way to raise and nurture children. I admire you greatly for building and doing largely on your own projects. It seems rather unreal that a young person knows how to do so much. Thank for sharing your life via KZbin.

Fully agree with the comment above me. Burying an animal that you allowed to die a horrific death is not loving and respecting them. Allowing your dog to chase your birds and do nothing about it is not loving and respecting them. These people should not have animals until they learn to actually care for them properly.

Sorry for your loss of Junior. It's definitely hard at times to balance the animals. They have their own thoughts and feelings. We can train and teach them all we want, but they still have their own mind. I'll share an incident that happened on my little farm. Our dog Midnight grew up protecting our chickens, ducks and goats. Never had any problems until we got this cute Cayuga duck that grew up being a male jerk. He hissed and chased us, the chickens and Midnight. She tried to keep her distance from that duck but one day she was out following me around while doing the water, she wasn't to far behind me when that duck came out running and hissing from under the porch and bit Midnight, she did a quick growl and bit back and in that quick couple seconds ended that duck. It's not like we can discipline a duck, they do what they want and I couldn't discipline Midnight bcz in her mind she was protecting herself. She didn't understand that her one bite could hurt the duck. She was their protector. Accidents happen, even sad ones. I shared this so you can see things do happen, and it's not your fault. Joey obviously wasn't out to kill Junior bcz he was still alive. I think it was a disagreement and just like Midnight, Joey didn't understand that duck bodies are fragile to dog bites. You guys are awesome with your animals. None of them came with the owners' manuals so we all have on the job learning. Sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't.

It seems to be a theme. Problem animal? Destroy it. Not address that Joey has too high of a prey drive and is unfortunately not trained well enough as a farm dog. This wasn't something unexpected to be honest and I fear that Joey is going to be essentially abandoned by them. Not actual fully abandon on side of the road, but given away, instead of introspection and maybe getting some better training done. A year or so ago they tried to do a board and train with Joey somewhere and there was an incident with the trainee. Just like most videos where something has gone wrong, they blame the other person in the situation, never thinking they could possibly have anything to do with the situation. So it was this random trainers fault and not Joey's that she may or may not have nipped the guy. Then it was the predator animals, where they used an extremely cruel and inhumane trap system and trapped 2 potentially innocent wild animals, caused them some severe suffering for however long they were stuck in the traps, and then shot them. Instead of beefing up the security and safety for their animals, or taking proper responsibility for their animals. Now it's Joey going after Junior. It's not the human's fault for not addressing the issue sooner, whether that be properly training the dog, or properly protecting the duck, or whatever. They let the process happen and are shirking the actual responsibility. Poor animal husbandry, and it sucks Junior had to pay the price, and we await to see what will happen to Joey.

@@madginger3634 I worry the level of protective over the human's Joey has, she is going to accidentally hurt a human, hell, could go after one of the kids. Joey can't tell the difference between "we are playing and screaming because we are having fun" and "he is being a mean brother and beating the crap out of me and I need help". This is the kind of behaviour that leads to serious tragedies and they have 2 VERY small children, and even the older boys aren't that big.

When a bird is weak or sick electrolytes are crucial. You can even replace the water with Gatorade in a pinch and they often make amazing bounce backs. Keep that tip handy for future cases

I think that it is nature, be natural. It is very heartbreaking, but I think you, your family ( including sweet protective dog, and your duck) were all doing what is natural. I hope you don't even think about putting your beautiful dog down! I also hope that you keep free ranging your feathered family members. I watch your channel because I find that you walk the line of keeping many animals as ( I'm going to say PET'S, but only for lack of better word) and letting them be free, very beautifully! It's my hope you keep doing what you do , the way you do it!! All the while learning along the way. Wishing you and yours health and joy, Audri

It's not the duck or Joey's fault. Joey was doing what she was taught to do. The duck was protective over its space and mate. It completely comes down to how you house the duck and train Joey which falls on you. Both situations should've been handled way better. You set Joey and the duck up for failure. I've followed you guys for years and will still continue to do so but that doesn't mean your not human and make mistakes. I'm THANKFULL that your transparent as we are slowly setting up our homestead in a rental property with less than 1/4 acre of land so I can learn from your mistakes and many other homesteaders I do follow!
