I made some mistakes in this video (a regular occurrence). The keen-eyed observer will have noticed that I mistook this Motiv bike for a Marin, and gave it the wrong logo. I always used to get those two brands mixed up and it came back to haunt me in this video. :) I also put the back tire on backward. So much for attention to detail. 🤦 We'll get there folks! Daily improvements. Thanks for watching anyway!
@MarshWaha3 жыл бұрын
Glad to see you recognized your mistake. The big mistake I saw you make was hitting your Park Tool crank puller with a Mallet, you really didn’t need to do that, your supposed to turn it clockwise, there will be a little resistance but it will turn and then the crank should come off. Second,if there’s corrosion in the crank arm bolt holes, on a square taper first take the bolt out, and then using a dremel wire brush and some simple green, spray the area first then take the wire brush and clean out the crap in there, then remove the crank arm with a crank puller like normal. Those are my suggestions. Otherwise nice job as always.
@BuildaBetterBike3 жыл бұрын
@@MarshWaha Oh I'm very aware of how a crank puller should work. I tend to go straight to use a hammer first, ask questions later (not saying that's correct). But in my defense, there was a lot of corrosion in there and it wasn't coming out with solvents I had.

It was all going so well, but then the crank, and the fork(!!), and that nice rapid-rise derailleur! It turned out a nice-looking bike, despite the wrong brand (hint: Motiv has a v, Marin has an r). And as a sucker for word play, love the name.
@trenttheriault90383 жыл бұрын
That Motive was my first new mountain bike back in 1997 and I still ride it, although it has been highly modified. I added a custom milled rear adapter for disk brakes, an upgrade to 27.5 wheels and 100 mm air fork up front running a 1x9 11-42 tooth drivetrain. It's bulletproof.

Concurring with Two Wheels, I still have the same bike that I bought years ago I believe on clearance from Costco. Wondered what happened to Motiv, bike is fairly light and seems to be made from okay parts, saw one at a swap meet one time. Nowadays, some lower cost MB's are 27.5's or 29's, have mechanical disc brakes, 1 X 7 gears, tapered head tubes.

Probably the best real bike restoration video I've seen. So many restorations are actually "builds". This guy rebuilding wheels, stripping and powder coating his own frame and parts, rebuilding hubs, etc? Yes. It would have been nice to reuse more of the original parts. Great example of what is possible, but not exactly for the regular home builder
@janbonne3 жыл бұрын
I don’t blame him for not reusing the original parts but it does look like he kept a lot of the junk I would’ve thrown... like the calipers, fork (ugh those cheap springs), crank arms, the handlebars, he even seems to have redone the wheels spent a lot of love repainting the original trash rims and hubs.
@jimmynich47913 жыл бұрын
@@janbonne I was thinking that, it doesn't look worth the effort to recon all the parts, best just to upgrade them.
@MaximRecoil3 жыл бұрын
"So many restorations are actually "builds"." This one isn't a restoration either, it's a "resto-mod". I like that this guy powder coats instead of doing rattlecan paint jobs like most others on KZbin do, but he makes some weird choices, like spending so much time, money, and effort on cheap bikes, and using terrible colors. All those parts he powder coated in that ridiculous pink color would have looked way better left bare and polished. Plus his stenciling method of applying lettering/graphics results in edges that aren't clean. Instead of trying to get fancy with it, he should just apply the vinyl stickers and leave it at that, like bike factories normally do.

You are absolutely an expert and know what you're doing, but be careful blasting off decals with your media blaster. Even the smallest amount of old adhesive can cause the media to gum up and cause headaches. There was an FNG at my previous job that wouldn't listen and kept removing vinyl decals with the blaster so when the system started clogging he was made to clean it all out and change the media.

I am still waiting for a channel with bike assembly videos in which in the end the proud mechanic does NOT install a chain straight from the box. I don't know if this is some kind of dark magic knowledge or just laziness. Just don't do it!
@BuildaBetterBike3 жыл бұрын
I can't think of a single reason why I wouldn't install a new chain straight from the box. Please enlighten me.
@sztigirigi3 жыл бұрын
@@BuildaBetterBike A new bicycle chain is kept from elements coated with a special kind of grease. This grease is meant for storage ONLY. It is extremely sticky and attracts all dirt when installed on a bicycle. Most bike shops and mechanics either don't know it or just don't care. The only proper procedure is to bathe it for at least 24h in a chain cleaner, then isopropyl alcohol and then grease it with anything that is meant to grease a bicycle chain - chain lube, wax or alike. And don't buy into nonsense that there is some special kind of grease deep inside the chain that if removed the chain will fail. Another option is to buy a super fancy chain already covered with a special wax or lube (Ceramic Speed). But this is rather rare.
