I got that reference dig at CL, laughing my ass off
@indeedgrasshopper19 күн бұрын
Same here. When I first went down the sailing KZbin rabbit hole, the algorithm kept recommending his videos but the lack of sailing content and condescending attitude (calling all boats under ~$150k garbage) was totally off-putting. Maybe the guy's a legit sailor but he comes across as just an armchair jerk with opinions. Lady K Sailing is pretty much the opposite which is why one got the subscribe and the other got "don't recommend channel." 😁

@@indeedgrasshopper Look up YT channels "Sailing Yacht Florence" , "Solo sailing around the world" and "Wind Hippie Sailing" for really good unpretentious material on cruising in small boats (35', 27' & 27'). The "Florence" couple recently completed a fundamental post-circumnavigation refit and so both very technical stuff and spectacular sailing is in their channel. The other two are women circumnavigating solo... the "Wind Hippie" having been born during her parents' (the legendary Martins) circumnavigation in the '90s. I doubt any of the boats in these videos is less than 30 years old, if not 40.

I chuckled at that reference too. I subscribed to CL for a while, but the attitude just pissed me off. Although, in CL's defense, he did put up a really relevant (if snarky) piece just recently in which he griped about how many/most of the more popular sailing channels on YT have descended into the pit of influencer marketing and now offer very little in the way of actual content about sailing. I agree with him on that.

Nice video. I watched a CL video where he slammed you with personal attacks. I was immediately turned off. I can't stand that level of immaturity. In one video he said he has Asperger's syndrome but I just don't accept the personal attacks on people. I think CL has good points at times but I can easily relate to you. You really help me in learning about sailing. Please keep up the good work, thank you!

At 78 took the plunge. In my twenties sailed a 17 footer out of BHYC but moved to Calgary and sold boat. In late 2023 set up a spread sheet with list of needs including viewing and transportation costs. Checked out everything in the 23 to 28 foot range in western Canada for sale. Winner was a Mirage 26, excellent condition, one owner, stored inside for winter, trailer, good reputation for quality and sailing characteristics. Why? My chosen lake has wind that can build quickly, needed enough boat to adapt if weather conditions deteriorated. Marina has season launching service. Spending a fortune for a tow vehicle not in budget. British Columbia boats were cheaper but did not come with a trailer. Truck not in budget. Before any sailing took sailing course and received Sail Canada Crew Certificate. Had great summer sailing, 25 days on the water, most solo. Boat on the hard. Best decision in years.

Even said channel talks about the mistakes made at the beginning of their sailing. Keep on cheering those of us trying to get there! :) Hope to see you out on the water soon!

Excellent presentation, the kind I would have needed before buying my first sailboat (now on my 3rd). Thank you! I will say Chris has seemed to have toned it down some, he did a nice video talking about his own personal reasons for not sharing his face, which I understand. He also talked about his reasons for calling out various channels in an attempt to fight misinformation, which I appreciate. He’s also started highlighting various channels that aren’t entire full of crap that the KZbin algorithm may or may not have ever recommended otherwise. I’ve very much appreciated those recommendations. Lastly, as a delivery boat captain I do respect his opinions on the boats he’s actually sailed instead of simply toured at a marina or at a boat show, which is what the vast majority youtube channels do. All that said, yeah, his attitude isn’t to everyone’s liking, no argument there. I enjoy watching both his channel as well as Lady K, I feel no need to choose a horse in this race.

My life began at the age of 37 when I moved onto a 28,000 lb, 37' Rafiki cutter with my wife and two kids in the San Juan Islands, WA. I learned to sail by sailing it. The first trip we got involved in a gail at Admiralty Inlet in a head wind and tide against us. We were able to pull into Port Townsend, WA and licked our wounds, cold and terror striken. First lesson, ALWAYS WATCH THE WEATHER.

I got my first boat this July. I pretty much came to these same conclusions. Got in at the marina i wanted to, still fixing small stuff here and there. I learned you can rent a 2500 diesel. I loaded up the entire family and drove 800 some odd miles to Washington NC, twice. Worked on it at home until my neighbors had steam coming from their ears. Now been out 4 times and stayed 4 nights. Had a great time every time, so far. Next project is to get the propane working to cook some eggs and coffee in the mornings. Rebuild the head, so it works a little better, and then fix that leak. Ballin on a budget, so they say.

With a trailer I launched it in Kingston, Tobermory, Penetanguishene etc, on a launch ramp. Beautiful country to see with your family. Please Note!!! I would take the outboard of the back of the boat and put in the back of the car to avoid dangerous fish tailing on the highway. If it becomes an issue.

Nice video. You and Chris have a lot in common. You're both passionate about sailing and getting people to sail. Yes, he shits on others opinions and is pretty blunt about his own, and if he's to be believed (which I do) he has over a 100k nautical miles under his belt... so it would behoove anyone trying to learn to not just dismiss his experience. And he has a lot of great points that only someone with his experience can bring. Just like racers have a very unique take on sailing compared to coastal weekenders. Bottom line, you both bring something quite valuable to the table and actually agree more than you disagree despite the differences. Plus I think a little YT drama is fun. PS... he's obviously had some kind of transition because for the last couple of months he's toned everything way down and is reviewing YT sailing channel boats. He hasn't said a bad thing about any of the people. Focusing on the hardware not the personalities so much.

I’m getting so close but I had a somewhat significant epoxy mishap that almost broke my will to continue And only my wife kept me from listing it for sale that day… it’s not fun ONLY working on a boat and not sailing it, I want to be a sailor not a boat mechanic… oh and I like that Baba 40 in the beginning!

Buy a boat!!!! Fantastic advice! The “walk away” items are important. Good hull, decent motor, and no major safety or structure issues are key. The first boat I looked at was definitely a walk-away boat w a bad hull. But then I found Day Break for $3500 in a barn. She needed new sails ($2400) but that was it to get on the water. I’d say your first boat needs to be sail-able when you bring it home. No “projects” - a sailable boat. There are so many boats out there, and winter is a good time to buy. Just do it!!

When I was looking for my first boat my first requirement was it's capability to forgive my mistakes. Thus keel and displacement ratio about 50% was sweet spot for me. And then durability. And then engine working and sails at least okish condition. I didn't care about water damage as long it was freshwater, electronics installed. And there was one more thing - working head, that I had to redo completely on my boat as aluminium black water tank where corroded so badly that pipes attachments just fell of. And after that 8 days non stop Norway coast. Atlantic ocean during that time just teached me, fog, rain, sudden gale force winds... No instructors, no experienced people. Just me and my boat. Dingy, liferaft, rockets, vhf prepared for emergency situation. But I trusted my boat and she kept me safe.

I love your channel, it is honest and straightforward. There are lot of KZbin never sailed before that think youtube stars before else. I just red one of typical youtube sailors clishe "BOAT DAMAGE DISASTER" , it is not about sailing, 80% of those channels if not more, is drama, bikinis, and then try to sell you some supplements or things you do not need in your life. I used to have so many car engine failures, I never knew that that can be a income means, not my school of life. What surprises me most, Patreons financing same vicious circle instead of financing a good school, course, tutoring.. so it does not happen to them any more. But somehow.. we all know.. once no drama.. no show. No views, no income. And then inevitably it comes .. "why we decided to abandon sailing".. not because there was some real good reason for ones that trully love sailing, but because finances and views did not work, think more hones assessment would be, we thought we can live a dream on youtube viewers expenses, but did not work.

Rule #1 - Watch Lady K. Rule #2 - Watch every other channel you can find that talks about these things (not the pretty, I am in the BVI ones) #3 - Understand what you need it to do for YOU. #4 - Make sure it fits with where you will be sailing it, and where/how to store it off-season/unused. #5 - Ongoing costs, how much/yr are you willing to spend for boat yards/harbour/maintenance etc... #6 - Write all of these needs down, and review them as you are standing on the boat you hope to buy. Liability insurance - I got mine for $40/yr with my existing insurance co. (After reading what I just wrote, I think I have been watching too much Lady K!)

Hey Tim, I'm pretty sure that i will never get an answer to this question, but here goes nothing. You mentioned in this video that "you probably won't have to worry about a survey on your first boat" , well I've asked this question on many sites including yours in the past: At what price point should you consider hiring a professional marine surveyor? Everyone says never buy without a survey, but at the lower end of the spectrum it all becomes murky. As for myself, i feel that i can assess a boat's condition up to a point (I can sound the hull with a hammer, check the keel bolts, check the chain plates, check the standing rigging, check the deck for soft spots, and assess the condition of the engine -- inboard or outboard). As for my comfort zone i believe that anything over about $15k deserves the second set of eyes to look it over -- am i right or should i save the $1k and push it to $20 - $25k?
@LadyKSailing19 күн бұрын
Hey. I think that depends on you. People are afraid to answer that question. It’s sort of liability. No one wants to be the reason someone bought a bad boat and gets hurt or someone dies. So the answer is - always get a survey. For me, and this is just me, I trust my judgement up to about 50 grand. But, I took surveyor courses and was an ABYC member for years. Always studying and stuff. This is a question only you can answer for yourself. But my standard answer, liability concerned, is always get one. I’ve never seen anyone actually get one for a $5000 boat.
@Monkeywrenchmotorcycles19 күн бұрын
I don’t think there’s a magical number but a couple points; 1: if you are financing the boat a survey is most likely required, 2: if you are getting full coverage a survey is required, 3: if it’s enough money that’s it’s a significant or life changing amount you should get a survey and full coverage. What that amount is, only you can answer.

I know this channel is more geared towards yachting, but if someone wants to get into sailing, a dinghy or beach cat is a great option as well. They are pretty cheap, they do not require any crane to get into the water. There is no need for a costly marina, you can take most dinghies off a trailer and be on the water 30 minutes later. And there is no need for a giant truck to pull a boat with a 100 kilos around, every car can do it. If anything needs replacement, you can easily fix it yourself, even the mast top is pretty accessible The feedback is also much more direct. Weight trim really makes a difference and if you happen to mess up, you go for a swim, righten the boat and get back. All that experience translates to yacht sailing pretty easy

Get a bilge keel that can use a low cost, half tide mooring and doesn't need to be lifted out to access. Trailers add extra complexity, and costs

You should do a video on a macgregor 25. Very similar to this, but with a swing keel so it can launch at any ramp. I love mine so far.
@@LadyKSailing In Poland, they make high-quality real sailboats with internal ballast, drop masts with A-frame, swing centreboards and rudders with about 1 foot minimum draft. In Ontario, there's a dealer importing TES boats, (TES Yacht Canada). Such boats open up all sorts of inland waters, e.g. the Kawarthas, resembling the Mazurian Lakes of Poland. Much sturdier than Macgregors, but eminently trailerable. The mast can be lowered in a few minutes to go under low bridges.

Let me correct a couple of things. First, some marina's DO require insurance. I live in Colorado, so I am in perhaps a different situation than on the coasts, but our local marina won't even let you on the dock without it. (Same for some storage facilities) Further, EVERY boat is a trailerable boat since the reservoir freezes over the winter. 2nd - a survey is not necessarily required for insurance. I have an early Farrier folding trimaran called a Super Tramp, and I have insurance through Geico for about $300 a year, no survey required.

In my experience with keelboats in the 30 foot range, all marinas required insurance, and all insurance companies wanted a survey.

The San Juan 24 is a proven blue water boat. Don’t believe me? then check out the thread on Sailing Anarchy about the chap sailing around the world on one. Some of the best reading you’ll find on the internet. :-)

I bought my cheap sailboat on auction from Boat Angels donated boat at the of the season a year ago. I got lucky because you can't really check these out before hand but I figured out where the boat was and talked to the marina owner. He knew the boat; it's a small marina and he told me it was a good boat. He also let me know it had it's own cradle which wasn't mentioned and how much winter storage and summer dockage cost (on lake Erie). It's a 1976 Pearson 30 and had it's sails and the motor ran. It cost me $20, plus the $300 auction fee. I put it in the water in the spring and it floated all season. I got insurance online through Progressive and told them it was worth $3500, they charge me $30 a month and had no problem issuing it. I had personal problems that kept me from getting too far on it, but next year is the year!

I don't know how any common person can keep up with all of this. People say it's a do-able hobby and i LOVE the sea, but i'm pretty sure none of those folks are living paycheck to paycheck. I guess true freedom has a cost, and its incredibly steep. Sorry to be a downer, just sad knowing i'll only be able to enjoy the sea through these videos. (And youre doing a great job!) Keep it up so folks like me can live vicariously. Cheers!

Can You possibly do a review of all the other stuff we may need to keep in mind as hopeful new boat owners (insurance, storage options, maintenance, dock fees etc)? I feel like there is so much more to it than just buy a boat and start sailing, it's a little intimidating to say the least 😅 any advice on the broader scope of sailboat ownership would be appreciated!❤

An other very important item to check is the rudder. It is a common point of failure .

Yeah mine's on a trailer I estimated weighs 5,000 lb. The problem is right now I don't have anything big enough to pull it so it sits on the trailer at the marina for the winter. I'm looking to change that situation but not sure exactly what I'm going to do yet. Leaning toward a step fan with a diesel and 18-ft cargo bag to build a stealth camper with diesel with the Allison. Should be more than enough to pull around about and then I might end up taking it with me elsewhere anyway.

A Chevrolet Suburban would do it. Yves Gelinas towed a 9000 lb (4100 kg) Alberg 30 on a trailer around North America using an old Suburban (this was after he had sailed that boat around the world single-handed).

The guys from boatfools found a unique boat this week offered with its own accomodation a unique vintage design hand built by a master seaman ..just requires a new owner with the right attitude and love for vintage wooden boats. Perfect engine low hours bronze fittings stainless ... Etc etc. Even its own unique owners manual.🧙🏼♂️ But theres a lot of marinas and anchorages where people just have to sell or offload a older or smaller boat due to a death or change in circumstances. But if your ready willing and able.. theres a lot of older boats out there going for used car prices or conveniance deals. Though you might have to search some gunk holes, barns or corners of fields.

Buying your 1st boat depends where your going to put in the water... small lake would never want a solid keel because you would get stuck all the time. Better a swing keel 1st for your 1st boat.... so you don't get stuck on a shallow waterway. Also you did not talk about the sail quality.
