Welcome back to another cast iron restoration! This steak pan was found at my local scrapyard, I don't have one like this in my cast iron collection yet and I had to try the fire and elbow grease method. I hope this one inspires someone to try and save a cast iron pan like this one.
Thank you for your time, stay safe!

When I clean/fix my cast irons, I goldielox them, then wash them, then put them in the oven on the highest heat for about 15 mins, then take them out and spray them with spray and cook all over, then put them back in for 10 mins, and spray a 2nd coat, then put them back in for another 10 mins and do a 3rd coat, and then I turn the oven off and just leave them till morning and they come out a bluish black with a nice coat and they dont feel oily or sticky or anything, it works nicely for me.

That is how I maintain my cast iron also, especially if the coating gets a little abused.

@@AJRestoration I always used to use oil and a rag until I was lazy once and put the pan in the dish washer and it came out looking very "dry" so put it in the oven to heat up and while I was getting the oil, I spotted spay & cook and my laziness thought I wonder if this will work, and it did, it worked so well that i'll never go back to oily rags, cause it comes out with that bluish black color and with oil it sometimes comes out a brownish colour that looks rusty.

Great restoration, but I'm curious - why did you set it in a fire before removing the rust? Was there debris that needed to be burned off?

I love a nice cast iron skillet restoration. Just curious, why didn't you sandblast the skillet and wire brush it afterwards, before seasoning it?
@T_B
@T_B 5 ай бұрын
People often sand prior to sandblasting, so the rust doesn't mix in with the expensive sandblasting media.

I think you are referring to the zinc plating kit. I have no idea what the chemicals consist off. I know one of them is acid and the rest is passivation. What they are made off I have no idea.

I'm so jealous of where you live. Here in the UK I could wash a brand new cast iron pan in salty water and put it in the back garden for a month and it 'd look way worse than that. Impressively cleaned up though.

Yes cast iron does not like the constant humidity. Especially if there is a little salt in the mix.

I'm not sure why you cooked it in the fire . A wire wheel in the drill would have taken the heavy rust off and then all the hand finishing you did would still do the trick . The final product looks really nice though !

Burning it in the fire was suggested by a lot of viewers in my past videos and I thought I'd give it a shot. Thank you for the comment😃

For the purpose of removing scale ? Seems like a good way to warp a pan to me since you have little control of the heat .
@AJRestoration
@AJRestoration 5 ай бұрын
@@f75gunslinger Yes, the fire removest the old coating and neutralises the rust. The pan will only warp if its heated or cooled quickly. If it cools down with the fire its 100% fine. Also cast iron does not warp, it cracks.

The last time I sandblasted, a bunch of cast iron professionals blasted me with negative comments. This method was also recommended by some users to try and use wood fire to do the cleaning. In retrospect its really just better to sandblast it after the wood fire and give it a good wash. That scrubbing really is hard work, especially for a small piece of cast iron. But now I know it can be done without a blaster, its also good for someone that does not own a sandblaster that it is possible.
