Denise sent over this vintage hand drill for some love. I gave it some love and it actually works again and looks pretty good too (well at least I think so hahaha) Thank you for sending the small drill over, I had a lot of fun making it pretty again.

Superb work, maestro. If anyone gripes about the cracked handle, you can also stabilize the crack with resin and that could restore it further. Awesome video.

I did think to use epoxy but I wasn't too sure if I should. Last time I used resin I got the ratios wrong and it almost caught fire. It was smoking like Snoop dog.

There should be another small toothed wheel (cog) the same as the one driving the chuck in the opening at the top of the frame. It keeps the large cog that you turn balanced. It's missing. That why it keeps jamming when you use it!

Makes sense why it kept jamming, thank you for letting me know!

Very nice restoration and gear repair. I'm curious why you didn't repair the broken flange on the ring gear near the handle?
@AJRestoration
@AJRestoration 5 ай бұрын
The welding is a little too aggressive, it "eats" into the cast iron and it would ruin the surface. I kept it as is and repaired the tooth so it is functional again.

The cracks are part of the history, it's not a brand new tool. But why didn't you put a little bit of grease on the moving parts?

Personally I preferred the patina the wood had obtained through years of use.
@SlartiMarvinbartfast
@SlartiMarvinbartfast 5 ай бұрын
Agreed, in addition to that I preferred the original two paint colors - should have left that paintwork on even though it was 'worn'; I've never been a fan of removing the original paint unless it's a real mess with rust coming through from the metal. These 'make it look like new' restorations always make the tools look TOO new to me - instead let the tool show it's age while still cleaning it up and making it fully functional.

All those years of love and working just fine gone forever. Old tools tell stories with wear Think about who used it probably had to save up to buy it might have made beautiful things with it. Now it’s new big deal lots of things are new. Remember old tools tell stories listen to them. Please think of not doing this anymore
@AJRestoration

It wasn't functional as is, Ill do this as long as I live. I enjoy what I do. I leave certain wear/dents to keep some of the story of the tool, while making it functional and looking good.

It's almost irresponsible to not fix the cracked handle if you're going to restore everything else with a crack as bad as that drill has. And no lubricant? Contrary to one of the other commenters, this is reproachable.
