Figured I would throw out there that my new (remanufactured) crate 4.0 came with a Melling M128 oil pump. Another channel talked me into going with a M328 - which is the high volume pump- but also needs a bigger Melling pickup tube. Melling oil drive shaft has very specific instructions on what side goes into pump. Pump side has a grove machined around the spline. We will see how it runs in a week. Not happy with the big MEXICO tag on the block but no shops available to rebuild core/heads. Guess I got my 320,000 out of it.

I have heard good things about the Melling M328 pump but never used one myself, yet. Good luck on the repair, here's to another 320,000!

Im installing the oil pump on a new 4.0, it doesn’t look like there’s much of a difference between sides on the intermediate shaft, is there any difference between them is the pump side longer/shorter than the drive side?

I believe you are asking about the shaft that drives the oil pump, if so I remember it being the same on both ends so orientation didn't look critical. (in other words it could be installed either way).

Is the only way to replace the oil pump in a 2003 ford explorer 4.0l SOHC to remove the motor? its in the oil pan right? the one the parts store sold me goes behind the timing chain housing i dont think they gave me the right one? VIN K

The only way to replace the oil pump on the 4.0 SOHC engine is to remove the upper oil pan. I never tried to just pull the upper oil pan down with the engine still in the vehicle. It might be possible depending on the vehicle but even if it is it would not be easy. I found the lower oil pan is easy to drop down though, I had to drop mine in my 2004 Explorer 4.0 SOHC to clean out pieces of broken timing chain guides that ended up in the oil pump pick up screen (which was removeable with just the lower pan dropped). Vin K is 4.0 SOHC, but the vin W is a 4.6 which has a different oil pump design and it is behind the timing chain on the front of the crank shaft.

hmmm no gasket on the oil pump to block
@shortedtoground4 жыл бұрын
I was surprised for the lack of a gasket there. I was wondering why I was having a hard time locating a part number for one. Since it didn't have one from the factory, I decided not to use one.

Machine fit, no gasket. A little anaerobic sealer would not have hurt but not needed.

its the same pump for a ford ranger 4.0 xlt ?
@shortedtoground4 жыл бұрын
The Ford Ranger and the Ford Explorer both used 4.0L engines, however there are two different 4.0's. There is a 4.0 OHV and a 4.0 SOHC and both have been in Rangers and Explorers.. Looking up the oil pump for them both I see the same oil pump listed. One thing to note is that there have been some design changes over the years and I can tell you that this 1998 Explorer 4.0 SOHC engine in the video has a metal oil pickup tube but my 2004 Explorer 4.0 SOHC has a plastic oil pickup tube.

That pump drive magnet is for a ranger 4.0 v6 2002? Sohc?
@shortedtoground3 жыл бұрын
@@refrigeracionmartinez1134 If you are referring to the oil pump drive that is driven off the jackshaft I believe that part was the same on all 4.0L SOHC v6's.

I like to soak a new oil pump in a bucket of oil
@shortedtoground4 жыл бұрын
That is a great way to make sure it is lubricated sufficiently before installation. With how long it took me to build this engine, the oil pump sat immerged in the oil pan after I filled the crank case with oil while it was still on the engine stand. In the future I will be posting a video of how I primed the oiling system on the engine stand with a starter and battery charger.
